Rating: Summary: Great resource for a first year teacher! Review: I can't believe some of the reviews I have read. Many teacher's have a passion and love for working with children; however this doesn't necessarily mean they can manage their class properly. In order to be an effective teacher and convey your passion for teaching you must be prepared and organized and this book helps you with that without question. I think some of the people writing the reviews are either not teachers or have been teachers for a long time and think they know everything. We use this book in our faculty of education, it is a very valuable tool for those who are starting out teaching. I find it surprising that so many people reading this book know it all? Maybe you have all the answers, I would be impressed; or perhaps you think you know it all and it works for you. Classroom management is increasingly difficult in this day in age due to many circumstances. This book offers ideas and solid ones I might add for new teachers. Not everything will work for every teacher, or every student but I don't see some of these other reviewers writing books on this sort of thing? This book is very solid and again is highly recommended by our faculty, a world renouned university.
Rating: Summary: Don't Waste Your Time Review: All I have to say is that this book is a complete waste of time if you have any common sense at all. It was required in my Intro to Teaching graduate class for elementary education and once I read it I felt like I was in the third grade again because of the overly-simplistic and obviousness of the content. Be assured that my classmates would agree with me. Don't waste your time or money on this book!
Rating: Summary: wrong-headed Review: Fellow teachers, please remember the reasons why you wanted to become a teacher in the first place. I am guessing that your motives had something to do with the love of children or the thrill of seeing a student suddenly "get it". Although this book is subtitled How to Be an Effective Teacher, it focuses only on discipline. Of course every teacher has a fear of losing control of the class; if the students aren't paying attention, how can they learn? But I have found that the most effective teachers achieve classroom control through their own passion for their subject and through a palpable respect for their students. This does not always come easily, but I feel that it is worth striving for, and the sterile, joyless classroom that the Wongs seem to be advocating is not. This book is often pitched to new teachers, and I feel that it appeals to the fears and doubts that a new teacher naturally has. Don't fall for it. A few rules and nice clothes will not make you a good teacher. Trust yourself. You can do better than this.
Rating: Summary: Good ideas to use, but not all of it is realistic Review: This book will work great if the whole campus -- and preferably the whole district -- practices and implements it.Any classroom management system is only as good as the backing that you get from your administration. So, take some good ideas from the book, but don't be surprised if everything doesn't turn out as perfect as Mr. Wong promises.
Rating: Summary: A must-have for all new teachers Review: This is THE book you need to read before stepping into a classroom. I was lucky. I found this book the week before I started my first teaching job in 2000. I gave my dog-eared copy to my brother before he started teaching in 2001. I bought a new copy for myself because he never gave it back! I re-read it before every semester, just to remind myself why I do this. In addition to being practical, the book is also inspirational. Yes, it is geared toward elementary school teachers, but as a HS teacher, it still was a big help.
Rating: Summary: A Perfect Book!!! Review: This is a perfect book for the new teacher!!!! Everyone new teacher I know has this book. Filled with great info from discipline to maintaining an effective classroom.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read!! Review: This is an excellent book for the beginning teacher. It gives wonderful insight without being too technical. This book is an enjoyable, easy read and should be required reading.
Rating: Summary: Easily the best book about effective teaching Review: Don't listen to the negative views expressed by some reviewers, this is clearly a great book if your main aim is to be an effective teacher. If your main goal is to draw a pay-check and survive in the classroom then don't buy this book. Sure it's a bit cheesy in places and the chapter about how to dress makes me squirm but the overall "vibe" is great. Get organised. Teach procedures then teach content and first and foremost teach kids. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I've taught for 13 years in Australia and Canada and Harry Wong's strategies work.
Rating: Summary: This one is not worth the money Review: I don't have much to add - the many other negative reviews pretty much say it all. While there are some helpful suggestions, most are outdated, impractical, or just plain cheesy. Perhaps the best way to make my point would be to quote a passage from page 111 where Mr. Wong gives an example of what he might say to his students on the first day of class in order to establish rapport and control: "Welcome. Welcome to another school year. My name is Mr. Wong There it is on the chalkboard. It is spelled W-O-N-G and is pronounced "wong." I would like to be addressed as Mr. Wong, please. Thank you. I am looking forward to being your teacher this year. Relax. I have over 30 years' experience as a teacher. I am what is called an experienced teacher, a veteran teacher. Outside of class, I go to workshops, conferences, in-service meetings, college classes, and seminars. I also read the professional journals and work together with my fellow teachers. So you know I am up-to-date in my professional knowledge and my teaching skills. And I love to teach! I enjoy teaching, and I am proud that I am a teacher. So you can relax. You are in good hands this year with me, Mr. Wong. You are going to have one of the greatest educational experiences of your life. We will not only study (subject), but I will also share with you some life-skill traits that will help you to be successful in tomorrow's world. I can assure you that if you should run into me at the shopping mall 25 years from now, you will say, 'You were right, Mr. Wong. That was the most memorable, exciting, and fascinating class I ever had.' So welcome!" I don't know about you, but I don't know any kids anywhere that would fall for that. It seems that Mr. Wong has not related to real children in some time if he thinks that would be an effective way to start off a year. Many school districts (including mine) give this book to new teachers to read before school starts. Skim through it and get what you can out of it, but don't take this book too seriously. And DON'T spend any money on it - it would be better spent elsewhere.
