Rating: Summary: Useless drivel Review: Not helpful at all--just the usual kind of packaged drivel with a catchy title. Real research and critical thinking skills are needed to improve education in this country, not cute slogans.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book to re-read Review: The manner of presentation is precise and dynamic, like Mr. Wong. You'll want to pick it up and re-read it for things you forgot or missed, even after the first year.
Rating: Summary: A Personal Testimonial Review: I have been a high school English teacher for 10 years. In the summer of 1998, Harry Wong spoke to our faculty and this book was available for purchase in the lobby. I bought it and read it with the guarded suspicion typical of many "veteran" teachers who are actually stuck in "survival" mode. I read Wong's book and implemented some of his ideas in my classroom during the 98-99 school year. That year was the most positive of my teaching career, with only one office referral all year! I am rereading the book this week gearing up for the first day of school, August 19. I will implement even more of Harry Wong's ideas this year. I recommend this book to everyone, and not just first year teachers. I believe this book is even more beneficial to veteran teachers, who will be shaken when they recognize themselves in the many descriptions of the ineffective teacher, and realize that they could be the effective teacher with just a few changes. READ THIS BOOK! Borrow it from a friend, order it from Amazon.com, go to your local book store, beg your administration to add a copy to your school library--just get it!!
Rating: Summary: WRONG TITLE Review: As a veteran teacher of almost 30 years, I was astounded that a certified teacher would not know the most mundane, pedestrian "tips" offered in this book. What a cautionary tale for PUBLIC EDUCATION in the '90's. This should not be called the First Days of School....but...The First Days of Teaching. I cannot fathom how anyone can call himself/herself a teacher, and NOT know most of this "fluff and stuff" upon graduation. Granted, the first year of teaching gives you the experience in the trenches, which tweek and fine-tune the natural instincts of a great teacher. MOST DISAPPOINTING
Rating: Summary: A critically important book that is a must-have for teachers Review: For years Harry Wong has been at the forefront on the lecture circuit, and his books and tapes have sold in the millions. Teachers everywhere have learned myriad positive strategies from his lifelong experiences as a teacher. Now, the book he and Rosemary Tripi Wong wrote together has been revised, and is better than ever. Its high sales ranking is ample evidence that this is a critically important book for teachers. If you teach, you simply must obtain and read this book.
Rating: Summary: This book is EXCELLENT! Review: I love this book. I bought it two years ago and still find myself rereading it constantly. It covers absolutely everything you will ever need to know about teaching. I would highly recommend it to any teacher--new or old.
Rating: Summary: must for new teachers Review: My principal loaned me a copy toward the end of my first year. While it didn't erase all problems it helped considerably. I'm going to buy a copy for myself and I can't wait to implement what I've learned starting w/ the first day of school. I'm confident it will pave the way to a successful year.
Rating: Summary: Excellent resource for new and experienced teachers! Review: Wong and Wong have assembled a wonderful book filled with ideas and activities to do from the moment school starts. New teachers are given practical ideas on classroom rules, procedures and activities not taught in university classes or student teaching. Veteran teachers are reminded of what works to create a successful classroom environment from the first day of school. A must buy for any professional and concerned educator.
Rating: Summary: A must for teachers...new and old! Review: I have been a teacher for 2 years and have read this book at the beginning of each school year! It is a wonderful guide to those who do not know how to handle a classroom and also a wonderful refresher for those who are experts! I look forward to reading more books by Wong! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Rating: Summary: A Great Help To All Teachers Review: I am from the Philippines. My co-teachers and I were introduced to this book just this summer during our Annual In-service Seminar. Upon hearing about its positive feedback, our school director outrightly ordered the whole set - book and 8 videos. We are yet to implement what we have learned come schoolyear 1999-2000 which will begin on June 7. We are very much impressed by the approach presented by Dr. Wong both in the book and the videos. Honestly, we feel very much encouraged and very enthusiastic for the coming schoolyear. With our positive expectations of our students, the uniform procedures that we drew up and our competence as shown in our subject mastery, surely this schoolyear is going a different year for all of us. More power to you, Dr. Wong!!!
