Summary: A great all-around resource
Review: Home Buying for Dummies is an excellently written all-around resource for anyone who is contemplating buying a home. Especially emphasized is the concept that Tyson advocates throughout his Dummies books -- that of making sound overall financial decisions. Home buying is not necessarily for everyone, depending on present financial situation or future goals. Tyson and Brown do a great job at helping you figure out where you stand, and give you the tools to go about home buying intelligently. Dummies need not fret.

Summary: Informative and helpful
Review: House Buying for Dummies is the reference guide you need if you are not knowledgeable of things like mortgages, escrow, etc. The authors explain things in simple, easy to follw terms, and give good advice. I'm so glad I read this book before starting the home buying process.

One of the best features of the book is the sample contract in the back. It helped my husband and I with wording. Overall, a good buy.

Summary: The best home buying book available!
Review: By reading Home Buying for Dummies, for about the cost of a couple of movie tickets or dining out, you can quickly and easily discover how to save thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands, of dollars the next time you buy a home.

How can we make such a claim? Easy. Between the two of us, we've spent nearly 40 years personally advising thousands of people like you about home purchases and other important personal financial decisions. We've seen how ignorance of basic concepts and practices translates into money-draining mistakes. We know that many of these mistakes are both needless and avoidable.

No one is born knowing how to buy a home. Everyone who'd like to buy a home must learn how to do it. Unfortunately, too many people get a crash course in the school of hard knocks - and learn by making costly mistakes at their own expense.

Buying a home will probably be the largest purchase that you'll ever make. If you're like most people, buying a home can send shock waves through your personal finances and may even cause a sleepless night or two. Buying a home is a major financial step and a life event for most people. It certainly was for us when we bought our first homes. You owe it to yourself to do things right.

Why this is the best home buying book for you: *It's in English. Because we're still working with real people and answering real questions (Eric, through his financial counseling, teaching, and writing - Ray, through his radio show, real estate consulting, and writing), our information is current, and we have a great deal of experience at explaining things. This experience can put you firmly in control of the home-buying process (rather than having it control you). *It's objective. We're not trying to sell you an expensive newsletter or some real estate product that you don't need. Our goal is to make you as knowledgeable as possible before you purchase a home. We even explain why you may not want to buy a home. We're not here to be real estate cheerleaders. *It's holistic. When you purchase a home, that purchase affects your ability to save money and accomplish other important financial goals. We help you to understand how best to fit your home acquisition into the rest of your personal-finance puzzle. *It's a reference. You can read this book from cover to cover if you want. However, we know that you're busy and that you likely don't desire to become a real estate expert, so each portion of the book stands on its own. You can read it piecemeal to address your specific questions and immediate concerns.

Summary: Worth Twice the Price!!
Review: Of all the books about home buying we purchased, this was the best. I usually don't like the "for Dummies" series because the name is so demeaning (and often the humor terrible) but this one is so engagingly written and informative that it is a must have for all home buyers. My husband and I will refer to this throughout the process.

Summary: Home Selling for Dummies is excellent novice introduction.
Review: Although HOME SELLING doesn't come up as the result of a serach, it is the partner book to HOME BUYING. The SELLING material is EXCELLENT. This should be the first book you buy and read if you are considering selling your home.

Summary: Good reference book for first time home buyers
Review: Home Buying for Dummies is great for explaining what and who is involved in buying a home, while also providing the tools necessary to obtain a good estimate of all of the costs involved. If you are a soon-to-be first time home buyer, and you need some insight into buying your first home, this is a great book to have.

In Home Buying for Dummies, a description is given of everyone that may be involved in your home purchase, telling what role each person plays. Aide is given to help home buyers select the house that they will enjoy and get the most out of. Also, descriptions and estimates of all of the costs that are involved are included and discussed. With this book you can have all of the information that you need to confidently find and buy the home you're looking for.

Summary: A must for new buyers
Review: This book is amazing. I never considered buying a "for Dummies" series book because I thought they would be overly simplisitic, but this book proved me wrong. The authors do an awesome job of presenting just enough detail on every aspect of buying a home- I kept catching myself having a questions, then reading on to the net chapter and finding the answer. You may be tempted to skip around from chapter to chapter, but I've found that reading this book from the beginning is almost necessary since things like understanding which mortgage to get and how much of a house you want are all dependant on answers you arrive at in early chapters. I've just finished the book and feel well prepared and educated to tackle the house-hunting task now. A definite read.
