Rating: Summary: Unavailable Support Book Review: "Financial Reporting and Analysis" by Revsine, Collins, and Johnson is a well written book, but in my opinion, because of Prentice Hall's unwillingness to publish the Student's Solutions Manual, I cannot recommend this book to those who want to learn, or relearn, on their own, the subject that it teaches.Part of a student's learning process lies in doing the exercises, problems, and cases at the end of each chapter, but how will a student know if he is solving the problems correctly if there are no means with which to compare his answers to? I have visited the publisher's web site, to see if the Student's Solutions Manual is available, and it is not available. When I learned introductory managerial accounting, I used "Financial and Managerial Accounting", published by South-Western College (http://www.swcollege.com/front.html), and it contained answers to some of the problems within the textbook. I had to learn managerial accounting on my own without a teacher, and this book made that possible. I still have this book, and I use it for reference purposes. There is no way I can fully learn intermediate accounting on my own with "Financial Reporting and Analysis" because the Student's Solutions Manual is not available. It is similar to shooting with a rifle at a target and not knowing where your bullets are hitting.
Rating: Summary: Good buy but too expensive. Review: Book is good and comprehensive. Good for studying . Used astext for 2 accounting subjects in NYU, America's best finance univ.
Rating: Summary: agree with others - needs solutions manual - useless without Review: I agree with those that say this book would be more useful if it came with solutions. Right off in the first chapter, hypothetical situations are presented without any background information in the text. If you haven't had some experience in Accounting, you are going to be left scratching your head. The instructor in my class says that it causes you to think. Hard to think if you have never come close to experiencing anything that is being discussed. Some guidance would be helpful.
Rating: Summary: Useless without a Solutions Manual Review: I'm studying for the CPA. I bought the book because it's required for a course in school. But to actually learn for the CPA exam, I'll toss this one aside for one that provides a solutions manual. Authors who withold the manual for the instructors benefit miss a fundamental point about economics - who the customer is. It's the student that the book is written for and it is the student who pays for the course. Breffni University of Chicago
Rating: Summary: Very good for understanding the subject Review: The book provides very clear explanations about different aspects of financial statement analysis. The only drawbacks are that the book is a little simplistic and that problem solutions are sorely needed. However, I am sure you are not going to use oit for self-study- you would be using it as a textbook in a financial statement analysis class. The professor, would be able to provide you with solutions (as in my case- thanks Dr. Church!) and will also help you out with some of the tougher stuff. Whatever, the book does an excellent job in explaining the basic stuff- much better than the Sondhi book.
Rating: Summary: Not bad, but shouldn't be used for accounting classes Review: This is not a bad book. It has interesting real-life examples and discussion of important issues. The only real problem was that I had to use this book for Intermediate Accounting, and it wasn't good for that purpose. This book focuses on statement analysis and use, not on preparation. If you are taking a financial analysis class, the book is fine. If you taking an accounting class, it doesn't go into the specifics of how the statements are presented and is completely inadequate. Also, the lack of a solution manual is troublesome.
Rating: Summary: One of the better books available Review: This publication provides a thorough and comprehensive review of almost every important aspect of accounting, financial analytics and reporting. A useful tool for a person new to finance or someone needing a refresh or review of important topics. A solutions manual would have been helpful, but the book is a valuable buy nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: Worth to buy Review: Usually I sell my textbooks after using them. I will keep this one. It is well written and very easy to read. What I value in this book the most is the numerous examples of tips and tricks in understanding and manipulating financial statements. We use this book at Freeman, Tulane in our itermediate accounting class.
