Summary: very good intro stats book
Review: I think this is a great textbook. I have been reviewing texts for an AP statistics course and have settled on this book as a middle ground between very basic texts and rigorous textbooks for math majors.

It is not intended for math majors. I don't understand why reviewers are criticizing it for it not being more rigorous.

It has enough depth for intro undergrad stats, yet is adaptable to lower levels so some of the boneheads I have in high school can comprehend.

Excellent explanations. Very readable. Decent problem sets.

I approve.

Summary: Not happy with this text
Review: I was disappointed with the quality of this text. This book attempts to take a challenging subject and dummy it down into simple terms. What is left is an over- confusing non-accurate text. In two years, not one of my students has liked this book.

Summary: needs improvement
Review: My professor(who is a statistician) pointed out several problems in this text. Some times he was just in awe of the serious mistakes and liberties taken in this book. One that comes to mind is Mario's use of the Z-test when (in certain circumstances) really it would have been more accurate to use the T-test. Also, there are many little mistakes that should have been corrected by the seventh edition (in some of the examples etc). The book is okay if your just taking the course for a general ed. requirement...My professor, who himself has authored many high-level math textbooks found the book to be problematic. Perhaps there is a difference of opinion on the Z- versus t-test. Hopefully, the little mistakes (that aren't controversial) will be corrected before any new editions are published!

Summary: Book is good, software ...
Review: The book is a pretty good introduction to Statistics, but the software, "Statdisk", crashes all the time. I tried it under both Win98se and XP, and it crashes frequently. Though, it does work better under XP.

I download an updated version of the software, still buggy. It might be a good idea to re-write this program for the next edition. (just don't hire Deitel and Deitel, then it would never work).

Summary: Fantastic book
Review: This is a fantastic intro textbook. Interesting format and unique data sets make for a much easier learning experience. I asked a few Professors about the Z test vs T test question in an earlier review- everyone I talked to sided with Triola's approach. Of note, the fact that the author has posted a response here is a good sign that he cares about what us readers think!
