Summary: "Fat Albert" still tops
Review: "Fat Albert," as we used to affectionately call this book in undergrad, was yet another of those books teachers told us would be "a good shelf reference book." It was the main textbook for three of my classes so I reluctantly bought it. Now, five years later, and in my second year of dental school I still find myself relying on this book to clarify topics covered in classes ranging from Pharmacology to Physiology, and from Biochemistry to Immunology. In addition, Fat Albert is my go-to book for my research in a microbiology lab.
It was, and still is the most engaging and useful of any textbook I have ever bought.

Summary: Good for beginners

Summary: Comprehensive, very good reference book!
Review: At first I thought that I would find very specific information in this book (chemical pathways, thermodynamics); however, I was wrong because it uses a descriptive rather than a quantitative approach. If, for instance, you want to start to investigate on a topic, I recommend this book to everyone. It gives you a GREAT intro on a wide topics that it covers so that you can redirect your attention into an specific area.
Something that I really loved about this book is that it is very comprehensive, the illustrations clearly explained gives you a very good idea of what is happening and I think that with proper effort many high school graduates can understand this book perfectly.
In other words, if you are biology related major, or you are just to interested in it. This book is very good to give you a general view in a lot of topics! I personally recommend you to buy it...

Summary: A beauty and delight!
Review: I am a chemist, and bought this book to pick up some bio knowledge. The book is definitely a classic! It is so delightfully written, and I found my English improving too at the same time I am learning biology.

Very easy to follow and the authors are making the effort to make each chapter as stand-alone as possible, which made the book an excellent reference book for someone wanting to pick up an individual subject very quickly. Very up-to-date with the most recent discoveries included in the text.

I can't help loving this book!

Summary: Terrific textbook but still has flaw
Review: I definitely agree with other reviews above that MBOC is still the best textbook in the field of cell biology. It is widely used as a textbook for both undergraduate and graduate level courses. This edition of MBOC is coming with several changes in chapters related to molecular biology. According to the authors, six chapters on molecular biology may be considered a seperate textbook. Yet, personally, I think that those relevant chapters is too simple and confusing and their arrangement is somewhat not clear, as well. Generally, MBOC is absolutely the best textbook on cell biology, but not on molecular biology.

Summary: Great book for my Cell Biology Class
Review: I used this book for my cell biology class in undergrad. It was very helpful and so complete. It helped me to really ace the exams. However, I also used the following for my histology class:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999686
This last book was excellent for preparing me for the type of questions asked on the my histology exams. Both books I give 5 stars.

Summary: Indeed A Good Book!
Review: I was preparing for the Subject GRE in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in the search for a good book towards the same end, I hit upon a review on this very site of the "The Cell" . Taking a risk I got it. Its worth every dime that I paid for it.Having already read a sizeable portion of its main competitor "Genes", I was in a good condition to conclude that this was by any measure a much better book. Why? well firstly it assumes you have or remember very little background knowledge, so gives you all the details. Advanced users might find this bugging especially the first 200 pages. But as you go on, the book unfolds like a beautiful story raising important fundamental questions frequently(GENES does that too!) which are very stimulating. Secondly The area covered by the book is much wider that many other books of the same caliber. Thirdly its very well illustrated ... and if used along with the CD ... its a piece of art. Fourthly the CD ... its incredible.. and ships with all the needful software. Yes sometimes one does get the feeling that details are short at places, but lets give it to them you cant have evrything of such an immense subject area in one book. All in all, I would recommend it to all my peers. I am a medical graduate and have read a lot of textbooks on many subjects and I must say this one rocks! In its area it is comparable to "Harrison's Textbook of Medicine. Need I say more.P.S.Its really up-to-date.

Summary: Finally, a current version of my favorite biology reference!
Review: I'm a somewhat recent Molecular & Cellular Biology graduate, and the old version of this book was extremely widely used throughout my education. Now a graduate and preparing for the biology GRE, I was immensely overjoyed to see that a new version of my favorite biology book was being released.

It was expensive, but I figured it'd be a new and improved, updated and current version of my favorite book. I figured it'd go into more recent discoveries, recombinant techniques and so on. I figured it'd be chock full of illustrations, diagrams and photos that would make refreshing my memory and learning new things a lot easier. I also figured it'd be the ultimate study guide for college level cellular biology. And, I was right. I have no regrets buying the new version of this book.

If you have the old version and are contemplating taking the plunge and buying the new one, I definitely say go for it. I think I can safely say that you will not be disappointed whatsoever.
