Summary: Stronger and more objective databank.
Review: Harrison's is an excellent textbook... Most important problem for a physician is to get more accurate and objective datas as much as possible. Treatment modalities may be manuplated by many observers, representers; but you have to reach all of the experiences in a few minutes... For example many editors try to dictate replacement therapy or bifosfonates, but you need to read more about fluor therapy. Or you need to know that; only face and forearms are sufficient to see the sun for a few hours per week except many limited geography of the earth; so we dont need to prescribe expensive 1,25 vitD capsules routinly... There are a lot of textbooks which are full-up by subjective, limited studies to dictate many therapies. I hope new edition consists more cardiology... And we need fast look-up frames for quick reference, like Glance or Current. For example essential objectives for diagnosis, lab. and treatment notes in a few sentences... Thank you for this nice reference in medicine...

Summary: Just entering Medical School
Review: Harrison's is one of the leading authorities on internal medicine. Access to Harrison's is an ABSOLUTE MUST for any medical student! However, you might want to consider your options before sheeling out all of this money.

The first consideration is that your medical school library probably has access to the online version of Harrison's. You may even be able to access it from your home from your school library's website. this doesn't work that well for me, because I hate reading long articles online. I need to be able to make notes and highlight. You can print from the website, but it is a hassle.

The second, and I think best option, is to buy a used copy of Harrison's while in medical school, and then maybe get the current edition when you graduate. The basic information doesn't change that much from year to year. you can use an old copy of Harrison's to get the basic concepts down and then use other resources to get the most up-to-date info. I bought a copy that was 2 years old... and I am pretty happy with it.

Summary: Required Reading.
Review: Harrison's is the standard textbook for Internal Medicine and has been the standard for many years. It has done an admirable job of staying fresh, though I'm not sure the addition of an "alternative medicine" chapter belongs there any more than a chapter on atheism belongs in a new King James Bible, but whatever. The companion website is quite nice, though I have not figured out exactly how it will help me yet. The bottom line here is that if you are an Internist, you need Harrisons.

Summary: A good reference, but still boring
Review: Harrison's textbook is a good reference for internal medicine. It's handbook version still has a strong database & can be considered as "a firstER aid" for emergent situations & bedsides... Advanced treatment sections with dose calculations etc were missing parts for older reviews. But still, it contains a mass of boring details for a review (like statistics)...A good review must have "easy format to reach ACUITY". There are many survival defects. But if editors begin to think as a student while writing as an expert,I hope this effort will reach to better scores in next editions. And as a last suggestion;it can be a bit larger and thinner...Otherwise it will be really very difficult to find a pocket so large to carry it.

Summary: authority in pocket-sized form ...
Review: I have been using the 14th Edition of the main textbook for over two years now. The sheer size [and weight] of the book does not allow for easy carriage, especially when you have limited space. Moreover, I often had to leaf through reams of pages or read through several paragraphs when looking for information on specific topics. The companion handbook makes all these unnecessary. It is easy to carry around unnoticed in a small bag and, when there is need to double-check that elusive info, it is right there. Of course it is not as detailed as the parent text, but as a companion text, it fulfils its role very well.

Summary: The Best
Review: I have been using the Harrison's since my 2nd year in Medical School. It has been a great store of information. Harrison's is a essential for Residents in Internal Medicine. The 14 Edition is even better. Chapter on AIDS and HIV is fantastic.

Summary: A standard clinical reference that is a must have...
Review: I purchased this book to find out how clinical issues were taught in medical schools. To my surprise I found the topics quite interesting and comprehensible. The writing is turgid and the font is quite small. Yet, when some health issue comes up, Harrison's is my first stop. I just pick a topic at random and go through the article. Occasionally, if a term does not make sense to me I check with my copy of Steadman's. I truly believe that this book makes for a good family medical reference if one is willing to put in some effort. Well worth the shelf space in my library.
