Rating: Summary: I hope West fixes this edition soon... Review: Invaluable reference work for us attorneys and legal folk, but what is the deal with this ugly red cover? Why can't West make this with a green leather cover or burgundy cover like the 7th edition? Great book, even if it looks ugly.
Rating: Summary: A must have for the legal proffesional or law studnet! Review: Know of of a lawyer (whom does not already have this indespenseable tool) or of a person heading to law school; then you should buy this book for them, i.e., Black's Law Dictionary by Bryan A. Garner (Editor), et al. The reference book starts out with a pronunciation guide; preface (which is very well written indeed); guide to dictionary; list of abbreviations; dictionary; seven appendixes, legal maxims, the constitution of the united states of america, universal declaration human rights; time chart of the united states supreme court; federal circuita map; british regnal years; list of works cited. The price is abit steep ... but it is well worth its price.
Rating: Summary: This is T H E Law dictionary! Review: Magnificent, comprehensive dictionary, covering definitions thoroughly. Also contains legal maxims (latin), which are very useful, and a copy of the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Human Rights Declaration. A must have for any lawyer, or anyone whose activities involve the law (basically everyone).
Rating: Summary: worse than previous editions Review: Perhaps in an effort to clean up the design, the editors of this edition have dropped many of the terms of historical interest. I suspect that there are far fewer words covered in this edition than in mine (the fifth). I just had mine rebound, because I didn't want to get a newer one -- not because I couldn't afford it, but because the older editions are preferable.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Reference Review: Pure gold for a 1st year law student. Great tool for a graduate! Expensive & worth every penny!
Rating: Summary: Don't get caught behind on upgrading your copy of Black's Review: Some reviewers below have suggested that it is unnecessary, or even unadvisable, to buy the new edition if you have a past version of Black's Law Dictionary. Don't believe them. Would you listen to someone who told you "why should you buy a new version of Windows (or Mac OS)? That copy of Windows 2.0 (or System 4.3) is just as good."The editor of the new edition is Bryan Garner, who is probably the most important legal language scholar of the past ten years. Oh heck, he's the most important legal language scholar of the last millenium. He and his associate editors have taken great pains to rewrite every definition from the past editions to make them understandable and usable. Don't believe me? Compare the current definitions of "good faith" and "bad faith" with the definitions from the previous edition, which were (in essence): Good faith: not in bad faith Bad faith: not in good faith. Hardly helpful when you want to explain to someone (like a judge) why your client didn't act in "bad faith." In addition, the current edition has added cross-references to other common sources of legal definitions and explanations, i.e., Restatements and Uniform Acts. This is unbelievably useful when you want to cite a "meatier" source than "Black's Law Dictionary" in a brief. If you're like my law firm and are limping by with an outdated edition of Black's, buy this one today and find out what you've been missing.
Rating: Summary: Black's Law Review: the 7th & newer editions are missing much valuable information. Buy the older editions!
Rating: Summary: Awesome! But Red? Review: The best resource book on the market, however I cant stand the red cover. Give us a break.
Rating: Summary: a tome of some substance Review: The point of contention which normally arises in a discussion of this Pocket Edition of Black's Law Dictionary is the price. Many other products exist which are less than half the $ price tag. The only response is that these other books are a waste of money. Dollar for dollar there is no better option than this near perfect book. The months of preparation by renowned lexicographer Bryan Garner (author of the Dictionary of Modern American Usage), along with legal librarians and any number of other professionals and assistants have created a volume that will serve the law student especially well. The relief of not carrying the full dictionary in their backpacks is worth the students' money. And every student should own both a full and a pocket dictionary. These are indispensable tools. If you are not going to carry Black's Pocket Dictionary you are better off using the full 7th edition available (maybe) at the reference desk of your law library. Save your money. ...
Rating: Summary: No License Review: This book has all rights reserved and does not have a fair use license for copying definitions relevant to a particular use. If anyone from the legal profession knows of a legal dictionary that has license for limited copying for acedemic purposes, I'd like to know. Or, if someone from West Publishing could let me know how to obtain a license to copy, say 15 definitions, this would be great. Thank you!
