Summary: The "Bible" of Marketing
Review: Phillip Kotler's Marketing Management is the the classic MBA marketing text. It's comprehensive and encyclopedic--that means its not an easy read. Kotler's writing style could be described as a list of lists. Each topic is parsed into its elements and he then recites all possible attributes.

The book has an enormous market share, which means it comes with every possible ancilliary product (for instructors who adopt the book) such as videos and power points. Because Prentice Hall sells so many of this book, they can afford to issue new editions on an accelerated, two-year cycle. The good news from this is it allows them to move with the times (in this edition, they've eliminated all the trivial "Did you know ...?" sidebars that detracted from the seriousness of the last "Millennial Edition." The bad news (from a student point of view) is that you may be forced to buy new, because used copies won't be correct.

However, this is one book that you'll want to keep on your professional library shelves--it's as much a reference as a text. All other marketing texts either derive from Kotler or distance themselves from this book, so you might as well go to the source.

Summary: Kotler on Marketing : still the best !
Review: Prof Kotler's book was the text book on marketing when I did my
MBA in the 70s. Even today, it is the textbook of choice on marketing for MBA and similar programs. The most admirable aspect of the book is the way it has evolved over the years. It is tempting to use the cliche "change is the only constant." However, in the case of Prof.Kotler, continuous change and contemporary insights are the hallmark of successive editions. The only difficulty that I face, as a teacher now, is to do justice to this phenomenal work in the 40 hours that is allocated by the university for the subject. As a reference work on marketing management, the book stands distinctly apart.

Review: Strange that it shipped from Taiwan, but FAST delivery. Packaging was poor. Book looks great.

Summary: Go Back to Basics (drop the millennium hype)
Review: Taking my first marketing course in an MBA program, and I am finding this book to contain a wealth of information, almost too much (like sipping from a fire hydrant). However, I agree with other reviewers that a quick read gives a good overview of basics, and the rest will be useful as future reference.

The main fault I have with this book is the silly millenium trivia they stick in the margins of every page. These appear to be margin notes which constantly pull your eyes away from the text you are reading only to find out some obscure little thought about what the millennium may bring (having nothing to do with marketing). I am sorely tempted to go through the entire book with a black magic marker to obliterate the 'junk'. Perhaps if this filler had been left out, the font size could have been bumped up a point.

Summary: useless book
Review: The book has too much information on one page.
It's too heavy and too expensive.

The exercise questions have no answers and the level of the questions doesn't match to the contents'.

Summary: Marketing Management
Review: The eleventh edition of this bestselling marketing management text reflects the recent trends and developments in global marketing. It emphasizes the importance of teamwork between marketing and all other functions of the business.

Summary: Best marketing book
Review: The Millenium edition of Marketing Management is one of the best books I have ever read.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good overview of concepts and fundamentals
Review: The overall thoroughness and comprehensive coverage of marketing fundamentals is very appropriate for undergraduate textbook. There are plenty of excercises, illustrations and quasi-mathematical formulae, but the book lacks the depth and insight for the more discerning reader. The text is very thorough and verbose, which makes is boring at times, full with superficial direct conclusions without even an attempt to look at the bigger picture.

In my opinion it more retrospective than forward-looking and inspiring. I would highly recommend "Strategic Marketing Management" by David Aaker at 1/2 of the price and 1/6 of the size. Also, I personally find inappropriate that Prof. Kotler starts each chapter quoting his own book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent, comprehensive introduction to marketing
Review: The text has broad scope of coverage and makes you appreciate marketing as an essential strategic function in any type of business.

Summary: Marketing Bible
Review: This book by Marketing Guru Philip Kotler is a Bible you must read before starting your career in Marketing. 'Marketing Management' mainly focuses on strategic decisions of a marketer, such as positioning, segmentation, startegies at different stages of product life cycle, brand building strategies, etc. It is better to finish 'Principles of Marketing' first to understand the strategies in marketing management.
A joy to read, with great case studies and online companion site.
