Summary: Lynn - an avid fan from Australia
Review: As a student of Criminal Justice and Forensics, I find this book an absolute must. I regard it as my Bible for my studies. It is easy to read and I feel that Brent and his fellow contributors have explained everything in detail so well, that even an absolute beginner (or, as in my case, an absolute idiot!) in this field would have no trouble at all in following the explanations. It helps me tremendously when writing the obligatory essays one has to write during the course of the semesters and I certainly attribute the reading of this book to the high marks I have been getting. On a more personal level, I find Brent Turvey and Barbara Turvey are also approachable on any subject that a person may be unclear about and have no hesitation in assisting students like myself. For on-line courses, this book is an absolute necessity for those interested in criminal profiling and for students of criminal justice and criminology such as myself. It was the first book I bought when I embarked on my studies and 18 months later is still the one I turn to first when I need to research something.

Summary: Informative, well written and easy to absorb
Review: As a student of Criminology I found Turvey's voume informative, well written and the information presented in such a way that is was easy to absorb. I didn't find the lack of history of profiling to be a drawback as there are plenty of other books dedicated to this subject alone.

Instead Turvey has organised the book in a very user-friendly volume, which can be used as a reference, or just for a damn good read! I especially appreciated his index of authors at the back of the index, which makes resourcing his sources a breeze.

Even with the Australian exchange rate, this book is definitely worth the money.

Summary: Stand Reminded---A Snake By Any Other Name Is Still A Snake!
Review: Brent Turvey (and his friends) have put together a valuable contribution to forensic literature. Broken down to its most basic ingredients, the delicate nature of deductive profiling is clearly articulated. Insightful, hard-hitting and methodically flavored expertise regarding successful reconstructive procedures are detailed with an accuracy which is to be both aspired to and admired! Like the popular saying goes, "You've tried the rest, now try the best! CRIMINAL PROFILING is a "Must Read" for any self-respecting "forensic expert!"

Reviewer is the author of NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY, (which is also on Amazon.com).

Summary: A solid work on profiling, but not without flaws...
Review: Brent Turvey did a good, in parts even a very good job in presenting what profiling is about, but shows certain weaknesses when it comes to the issue he himself claims to be one of the most important ones: On the one hand, he criticises a lot, if not all other profiling approaches out there for not being scientific enough, and on the other hand, his dealing with arguments against certain other profiling methods (such as "statistical" or "geographical") is way to superficial and sometimes make the reader with a carefully researched backround knowledge of the above mentioned approaches wonder, if he really has a thorough understanding of those alternative profiling methods.I assume he does. But if this is the case, his contra-argumentation doesn't show it. All in all, however, the work is absolutely worth reading, especially because of the carefully chosen definitions of the technical terms of profiling in the given context, which have been used in too many contradicting fashions by to many different people within the profiling community up to this point.

Summary: A Fine Work!
Review: Brent Turvey presents an introduction to the field of criminal profiling that is long overdue on the market. This book is a must-read by anyone in the profession or desiring to enter the profession. Turvey focuses on the ideologies and uses of profiling and discusses how profiling is viewed as a tool and a profession from within and without law enforcement. He also discusses to some extent what is wrong with the present handling of serial homicide investigations and how this could be improved upon. However, students expecting a step-by-step guide too profiling will be disappointed. This book does not put one through the logical procedures and considerations of building a profile and that book is still waiting to be written by someone in the profession. Meanwhile, this book should be in the personal library of anyone interested in the criminal profiling field. Pat Brown....

Summary: Waste of Money
Review: Don't waste your money on this book. As a professor of Criminology, I found Mr. Turvey's approach to be quite juvenile in it's theories. Mr. Tuvey's analysis often contradicts itself in following chapters. I advise my students that there are far better books about criminal profiling on the market.

Summary: Very Informative and Useful Book
Review: I found this book to be very informative and helpful while I am taking a violent crimes college course. I warn you though, it is very graphic manual with color photos and discriptive language. I recomend this book to anyone who wants to be a criminal profiler or a violent crimes investigator.

Summary: Finally a book that explains the process of profiling!!!
Review: I have read all the books out there on profiling and nothing comes close to Turvey's book. Turvey actually spells out how one should go about developing a profile instead of talking about war stories and trying to explain why only FBI profilers can profile. Anyone who has every wished to learn about profiling or crime scene reconstruction should read this book. It will demonstrate that anyone with a background in psychology, forensic science, crime scene reconstruction, and investigative techniques can learn to profile. It is not a gift or talent given to FBI agents or FBI trained fellows. It is a skill that can be learned and improved upon, just like any other skill. The book is written is plain english and is a very easy read. So if you really want to develop your profiling and reconstructive skills this book should be on your shelf.
