Summary: Finally!
Review: I was so thrilled to read about Learning Outside the Lines! I saw the article in USA Today and couldn't wait to get my copy. Finally, a book written by those kids(oops-young men)who have been through it all themselves. I fully identified as my daughter is just entering high school. THANK YOU Jonathan and David!! I have given several copies to friends!!

Summary: Learning Outside the Lines
Review: This book has inspired me to want to read and write more often. I have been learning outside the lines all my life, but it took me over 40 years to discover that's what I was doing. I, like David Cole, have ADHD. Then I find this book by two authors who have turned a disability into a success story. I wish every teacher, parent, and student could read this book!

"Driven to Distraction" by Dr. Hallowell, was another book that made me feel this way, but "Learning Outside the Lines" was even easier for me to read. It is written in the way I like to read. It has bold headings and short paragraphs. It gets right to the point and I don't have to spend a lot of time reading descriptive words, I get the picture as I'm reading this book.

I feel the passion these two authors must have felt when they wrote this book. They are not giving you theory. I was doing so many of these things they talked about when I was in graduate school for Library Science and was put on probation for having such low SAT scores. I hadn't read more than five books from cover to cover when I began graduate school. It was the first time in my life I got A's! I can tell you from experience what these authors have written here should be seriously taken into consideration in our educational society. Maybe it is time for an educational revolution! What we need is more books like this one instead of looking for a cure with a pill or kids trying to self medicate with drugs and alcohol. After reading this book I felt like there are so many more success stories just waiting to happen.

Like they say in the book, you don't have to follow their methods exactly, what's important is that you find what works for YOU! This book is not just a guide, it's a true success story! I didn't just read this book, I experienced it! Read it and experience it for yourself!

Summary: Jonathan Mooney and his book are AWESOME!!!
Review: This book is a MUST HAVE for any one with a learning disability or who knows anyone with one! I feel very fortunate to have listened to Jon speak at the California Learning Disabilities Association Conference in Long Beach and what a great guy!! If you were not an advocate before reading his book, I guarantee you will be after! His personal experiences with the educational system just bring you to tears and knowing that so many people (my son included) experience the same frustrations that he did (does) just makes you want to get out and change the world!! Thanks Jon and David for such an AWESOME book! I have bought several copies and love to share them with anyone who will listen!

Summary: Skimpy on Science & Math
Review: This book is an absolute must-have for the liberal arts student. It was written by two students who weren't supposed to amount to anything, but somehow managed to graduate from an Ivy League school. The book is neatly divided up into three parts. Part 1 called Deviant Minds focuses on both of the author's personal stories and is humorous and reflective. Part two: Schooled is essentially a guerrilla warfare guide to surviving the academic challenges of college or university. There are chapters in this section dedicated to notetaking, discussion, reading, writing, studying, and exams. Part 3: Beyond Beating the System is about self-preservation and academic life skills. Unfortunately for those who study in the sciences, this book has no real practical strategies or suggestions when it comes to subjects such as math or biology. If you are in the sciences I recommend spending some time with the book before buying it, that way you can make sure it's a good fit. However, if you are a general arts or liberal arts student this book is a definite keeper. If you're only going to buy one book, let this be the one.

Summary: Excellent, realistic information
Review: This book is excellent for anyone interested in college and students with ADD or SLD. These two discuss the barriers they encountered as well as how they were overcome. Summary: Challenging "School"
Review: This book should be read by all secondary students who have too many teachers like Mrs. C who make students feel ashamed of their weaknesses and too few teachers like Mr. R who respect students' strengths. And, this book should be read by all educators who want to or need to think differently about kids like Jonathan and David who question the narrow-mindedness of today's education system and challenge us to do the same. Educators must not continue to ignore the outsiders because their challenging behaviors tell us that they are trying to escape from the institution called school because it does not provide them an appropriate learning environment in which their strengths are valued and their individual needs are met.

Summary: Terrific Read for Parents and Teens
Review: This book was fantastic! It was recommended to me by a therapist.
Jonathan Mooney is a wonderful person who gives hope to anyone with a learning disability. He has had extreme struggles throughout his life but has learned to overcome them and has learned techniques to deal with his dyslexia. The book also reforces why parents' support is so important to someone with LD.
A good book to share with teens.

Summary: Learning Outside the Lines
Review: What a great book this is!! It was given to our staff as a gift from the Price Foundation and it has certainily changed the way I teach. It provides key insight as to how the brain works in a student who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Furthermore, it also gives the responsibility for changing most of the behaviors to the students.

The book is to be used as a tool for students to succeed in school. Unfortunately, most schools are geared for only one type of learner but the book gives clear suggestions for students to learn how to learn no matter what your style is.

I have changed my style to teaching to teaching the actual strategy instead of focusing on content.

The book is an absolute MUST for parents, teachers, and administrators.

P.S. If you ever have the opportunity to see Jonathan Mooney - he is a fabulous and engaging speaker.

Summary: A Must for All College Students (ADHD/LD or not)
Review: What a great tool for college students. Even those without ADHD or LD can benefit from the helpful tips found in this book. It is more than a review of study skills. It actually teaches the techniques that make the difference between successful students and unsuccessful students. The interwoven humor gives the book a more personal touch, and the stories of the authors' lives bring it right home!
