Summary: Hubris
Review: I find it rather amusing how coaches think that just because they can coach a game, automatically it makes them experts on how businesses are run. Leadership is not generic, it is situational. Leadership is not about a person, it is an activity.
This book was given to me as a gift. I liked the basketball anecdotes, being a fan, but as far as advising me on how to be a leader, it's drivel. This is right up there with Rick Pitino, John Calipari, and every other college coach whose ego is out of control.

Summary: Excellent book in all regards
Review: I graduated from Duke in 68 and am an avowed fan of Coach K.However, I've hit a rut in my reading recently, can't find anything that seems stimulatiing or interesting.I was afraid this book would just be another of those "smaltzy" rah rah type of books that coaches(and usually someone else write), but I was happily surprised. It is really worth everyones attention, whether to motivate a business person or anyone on how to live ones life. The usual blah blahing about excellence is pretty much left out, thank goodness, and the book is full of very helpful aphorisms about what priorities to put first and how to lead a wholesome and successful life, even if you don't have a jump shot.Coach K comes across as really honest and sincere.I can't stand phonies and really was pleasantly surprised by the book. Lots of real life anecdotes about games, players, situations and how to take defeat.Truly inspirational from a superb leader. For sports fans, look what he did with the team of mostly freshman this year, way beyond anyones expectations. He uses his heart a lot, but also his head. You can also read and skip around in the book, its not like a novel.Again, his repeated emphasis on how to deal with defeat and failure shows true wisdom, far beyond that of most college coaches. I remember the tonge in cheek defintion of a college basketball coach by a player once."you have to be a little bit crazy to base your career on someone else's jump shot." Coach K is crazy like a fox.

Summary: Inspiring
Review: I have always admired Coach K and his accomplishments, and now I can see how and why they happened. Krzyzewski details his background and values, and how he motivates and teaches all his players. It is a very personal and introspective look by a Hall of Fame coach, and is valuable not only to coaches of all sports, but to business leaders as well. In fact, if you are a parent, it will give you insight on dealing with young people in life. I highly recommend this book as an enjoyable and inspiring read.

Summary: This book is grueling to read....
Review: I have always been a big fan of books on leadership written by sports figures. They are typically a can't-miss mixture of storied histories with timeless principles of leadership and perserverance. However, Coach K manages to mess it up in this book.

He constantly comes off as pompous and as though he has no real idea what lead to the success that he has had. In fact, he seems to dwell in cliches to cover up the fact that this is a naked attempt to profit from his basketball team's success.

If you want to read a good book on leadership, keep looking because this is not a book you should waste your time on.

Summary: Leadership explanation at its best
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book on leadership because of its analogies using the sport of basketball. The examples used are vivid, and they represent a stronger truth that we can find leadership and leaders in all walks of life. Hats off to this book.

Also recommend a book on leadership that goes into the detail we need to learn it and learn it correctly: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."

Summary: A Great Basketball Book and So Much More!
Review: I try to read one basketball book each summer due to the privilege I have of coaching the game. I also read a book per year because I love the game. I am really glad I picked Coach K.'s offering this year. Not only is it a good source of ideas and inspiration for coaches, but anyone who desires suggestions and advice about managemet skills and making more of their opportnities with family, friends, associates and their own personal situations. The experiences, feelings and personal teaching moments that Coach K. reveals to the reader in this book are well worth the time and effort invested by anyone who picks it up. As you read it, visualize the teachings, take notes, and enjoy the ride!!!

Summary: Coach K's Biggest Fan by Coach K
Review: I was appalled at this book. It was the most self-serving garbage I've ever read and I am a Duke grad. I am ashamed that he is viewed as a representative of our school. No wonder everyone thinks Duke graduates are nerds and elitist snobs.

The book was poorly written and is propoganda at its worst. Thanks, Coach, for giving Carolina fans another reason to view us as egomaniacs and assnecks.

Summary: ...Too Much
Review: I went in with a neutral attitude regarding "Coach K" and his life. However, once I finally emerged from this bastion of self-promotion, I could see what so many others have seen for years. "Coach K's" delusions of granduer are almost laughable, and his obvious need for attention is on full display. I guess he thinks being a college basketball coach (at Duke no less!) automatically qualifies him to dispense wisdom about business and life. I can only hope that the literary world is spared the torture of having to read a sequel which instructs us on the rest of life that he forgot in this one.

Summary: You can use your money better... by lighting it on fire
Review: I went into this book a huge fan of Coach K and the Duke program and emerged from it disillusioned to say the least. This book is a lesson in egotistical self-serving praise and it highlights the decline of the college game rather than the strategies of a great coach.

The title should be changed to "How I Became the Greatest Coach in the Land and Why Noone Will Ever Be Like Me."

Surely, you can get a better book elsewhere with significantly more analysis and worthwhile philosophy.
