Summary: Migraine Headaches
Review: I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the sound advice I received upon reading "Heal your Headache" by Dr. David Buchholz, MD.

I found the information on migraine headaches to be in depth in describing the numerous symptoms that accompany migraine headaches that I never imagined existed and treatment that has greatly enhanced my quality of life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from this problem. It can change your life. I know.

"Miranda" A.

Summary: THE SOLUTION!
Review: I can't say anything else about this book except that it WORKS and it was THE solution for me after years and years of migraine headaches and "sinus" headaches and taking medication just about daily. I"m off it all and have never had such a long stretch without a headache!

Summary: hard to do, but worth it
Review: I can't believe the difference this book has made in my life... I turned to this program after nothing else worked, and wondering whether I was going to be able to keep my job - feeling constantly muddle-headed from medications or active headaches does not a good employee make. Out of desperation, I made the decision to follow Dr. Buchhold's plan and go cold turkey with all the triptans I was taking. My doctor knew that I was taking a portion of zomig, maxalt, or frova every night and had advised me to stop, but sure enough, once I did: bam. A migraine would follow.

So I took off three days from work, set up help with my family to take care of the kids, and prepared myself to just ride the next five days out. I made it through two whopper migraines without using anything other than phenergan, a million ice packs (make sure to stock up!) and didn't end up at the ER (like I do 2-3 times a year). It's not so bad to live through excrutiating pain if you know you have no responsibilities and the end of the pain will eventually come.

So, after about ten days of constant low-grade headaches and feeling pretty lousy, I finally turned a corner. Of course, during that time, I kept wondering if all this hassle was worth it. But, it's almost a month later, and my life is almost unrecognizable to me: barely anything above a mild headache, and these will go away with basic Tylenol or Advil. I have more energy and I feel so much happier about my life in general (all you migraineurs out there know how depressing living with constant HA's can be). Initially, I was taking Advil 2-3 a week, more than the 2x/wk. recommended here, but even that need is fading. The big difference for me was getting out of the rebound cycle (a vicious cycle if there ever was one) AND following the diet, not always easy. I think the diet is key, but it's hard restructuring your eating styles and tastes of the moment. But I feel like I'm made an investment that I don't want to blow: fall off the diet and risk a migraine. I am also taking hydroxytryptophan, a natural precursor to seratonin, and I believe this is helping. My only problem now is insomnia, and I wonder if that's also tied to low serontonin problems, like migraines. At any rate, not only do I feel better but I'm saving big bucks by not buying all these prescriptions, $30-50 a pop even with insurance.

Thank you so much, Dr. Buchhold and Mr Reich, for writing this book and making it so easy to read and follow. And especially for being willing to take the hard line and tell people like it really is. I had looked everywhere for a more helpful, informative discussion of my particular situation. I've seen many doctors, tried acupuncture, herbs, supplements, Neurontin, Topomax, Depakote, Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Pamelor as preventatives. Nothing really helped. But this book seemed like it was written just for ME!

Summary: The day that changed my life
Review: I had the good fortune to attend a lecture by Dr. Buchholz in April 2003. I bought his book the same day. I have suffered from migraines and "sinus headaches" since my teens, and am now 52 (when you read the book, you will learn that there is really no such thing as a sinus headache). The information presented in this book has led me to be free of headaches within two weeks of starting the program. The book is clear, concise, and easy to read, whether or not one has a medical background. Often, as I was reading the book, I would think, "It's like he's writing about me!" This book is a MUST HAVE for chronic headache sufferers. It will change your life just as it has mine, if you follow this program.

Summary: It Works
Review: I strongly recommend Heal Your Headache. Before learning about the method described in it, I had severe, chronic headaches for years. I went to many different doctors, got many different diagnoses, underwent many time-consuming treatments, and took many medications. Some helped a little; some didn't help at all, and some made the headaches worse. Finally, years ago, I found Dr Buchholz, and he enabled me to bring my headaches under control. His explanations, which are in this book in an expanded form, have empowered me to make choices that minimize the likelihood of a headache. Shortly after I started avoiding the triggers, my headaches decreased dramatically in number and severity. A preventative medication reduced them even more. For the rare occasions when it is necessary, Dr. Buchholz prescribes medicine that works and guides me in guarding against the rebound effect. The specifics on migraine triggers and medication, among other things, are set forth in Heal Your Headache.

In writing this clear, concise book, Dr. Buchholz combines his extensive medical knowledge with his clinical experience. He provides, in reader friendly structure and language, abundant information on diagnosing, preventing, and treating headache. Unlike many doctors, he really listens to his patients and works with them, learning more and more from their experiences. Now he can reach many others with this book. I hope everyone who is struggling with headaches will read it.

Summary: This book changed my life.
Review: Reading this book changed my life. I am 69 years old and have suffered from migraine since I was a teenager. Now I am headache-free, and I can hardly believe it. I found the book to be clear and concise--very easy to understand. I decided to follow the advice very literally: stopped pain medication, adhered strictly to the diet, and started a preventive medication. Voila! No more headaches! I have spread the gospel to fellow sufferers, and those who took it seriously got rid of their headaches, too. I wish someone had written a book like this a long time ago; it would have saved me from a life of debilitating headaches. Buy it, buy it, buy it! You'll be glad you did.

Summary: It worked for me
Review: Dr. Buchholz's plan is very clear and specific and is based on years of his own clinical experience with many patients with serious problems with headache. My own problems were less debilitating, but did involve headaches in the afternoon on an almost daily basis. I tried his plan, cutting out most of the headache triggers he mentioned, with total success at eliminating my headaches. I've added back everything except the #1 trigger - caffeine - and have maintained myself with virtually no headaches ever since. Complete success. My wife has also tried the program for her periodic headaches, and though she doesn't follow the regimen completely has cut back a good deal on the serious headaches she would get monthly. I strongly recommend the book to anyone who suffers from headache.

Summary: An explanation and treatment plan that makes sense.
Review: I spent a solid year of sheer hell. This included five hospitalizations, including two complete heart blocks, and insertion of a permanent pacemaker, months of recovery and a six-month disability period off of work. All of it was directly due to migraines or the (mis)treatment I received for them.

Heal Your Headache provided me with the first believable explanation of my condition and how all of the symptoms related, and most importantly what I could do about it. By following the three step process in the book I've started getting my headaches under control, and minimizing all of the other symptoms: balance problems, confusion, tremors, nausea, light and sound sensitivity...

Dr. Buchholz provides enough examples to make any headache sufferer recognize himself or herself. And he lays out a complete plan of action that should help anyone. It's not particularly easy, especially for me to cut out ALL of the food triggers, but I've reduced my need for painkillers, and am seeing longer and longer periods headache free.

I recommend this book for anyone who suffers from frequent headaches, regardless of whether they consider them to be migraines.

Summary: Finally someone understands migraine patients!
Review: In this book, Dr. Buchholz explains why many patients do not get migraine relief from their physicians. He explains in detail the course of treatment recommended. His thought process is so methodical he easily convinces his reader to take the necessary steps to better health. If you suffer from migraines, you will not be able to put this book down. Once you've tried the treatment recommended, don't be surprized if you order a copy for your own neurologist!

Summary: Living in the migraine capital of the world...
Review: Ten years ago, I had the opportunity to be Dr. Buchholz's patient while living in the NE. We worked together until finding that Verapamil was the best solution for avoiding migraine. I was able to discontinue the Verapamil for the past five years until moving to Calgary, Alberta Canada (the migraine capital of the world!)for a two year job assignment. Dr. Buchholz graciously spoke with me "long distance" and said "I have finished the book and it is available...please read it and we can talk again." The triggers have multiplied since moving here (Chinook winds-falling barometric pressure) and it is great to have the book as a resource for reclaiming a headache free environment. I am amazed at the many people who suffer from these headaches and are so excited to have the recommendation of Dr. Buchholz's book. My GP photocopied the front of the book and is pleased to have the resource for his patients, as well. The rebound medications (quick-fixes) were such a temptation but the clear, easy-reading solutions in the book allow me to take control. It's great to talk to Dr. Buchholz, but even better to have Heal Your Headache.
