Summary: I wish I had this book two years ago...
Review: I was told I had migraines with chronic tension headaches--I had headaches every day, all day long. I tried everything possible: I had my wisdom teeth pulled, accupuncture, physical therapy, massage, psychotherapy, you name it. I was on numerous meds as well. My chronic pain specialist even told me to accept my pain, that acceptance would ease my pain a little bit. I am so glad I heard of this book on NPR! I followed the book to the tee, and only had four days of pain getting off my meds. It was so worth it. And the change in diet turned out to be not hard, either. Besides, I'd rather not eat my favorite crackers than have pain every day. GET THIS BOOK!

Summary: Stick with it -- it works.
Review: My life has improved so dramatically since I started using Dr. Buchholz's approach to migraine -- the 1-2-3 program. I don't live in fear that I may not be able to participate fully in life. I feel that I am now in charge of my headaches. I can control them -- they don't control me. It takes commitment and discipline, but it's well worth the effort. Just ask my friends and family!

Summary: No Science behind this supposed cure
Review: Buchholz recommends migraine sufferers stop taking the medications they use when they get a migraine. He also calls these "rescue" medications and explains how the sufferer is being "victimized" by their own medications. But, of course, he shows the reader that there is no scientific proof behind this strategy. And implying that the reader is somehow weak by needing fast relief may sell books, but it is not accurate.

The newest medications are not addictive narcotics and not many doctors think using them will cause rebounds. And Buchholz wants his readers to drop a long list of foods before they even try some of the new preventive medications. Maybe, like those who have never given birth and don't understand the level of pain involved, Dr. B. doesn't really know what he is talking about. This list of foods are ones his patients have told him are triggers. No statistical information makes them common triggers.

If the kind readers and sufferers want some serious relief, they will stick to the advice of their own doctors, and not buy this book.

Summary: wonderful book
Review: The explanation of triggers and thresholds is really valuable. After reading his explanation, I could see why just dropping a few "triggers" from one's diet would not get rid of headaches. It also makes clear why you can get confused about what is a trigger, if you don't give up ALL the triggers. Following his advice step by step will very possibly get rid of or greatly reduce your headaches. It has greatly helped me.

Summary: Real help for people with migraines
Review: If you or someone you know suffers from migraines, then you likely know the frustration that comes from trying to find information that is clear, practical, and consistent. Dr. David Buchholz' book is exactly that: clear, practical and consistent. He is honest without being condescending, explaining migraines in a way that really makes sense, and offering practical and effective help. It is clear that he listens to his patients; the respect that is conveyed is refreshing. The explanations of how one's triggers and migraine threshold level are intertwined was especially helpful. For the first time, I was able to understand how food triggers work and why it is so important to follow the migraine diet. I enthusiastically recommend this book - it can make a tremendous difference in your life.

Summary: Great Advice
Review: I have suffered from migraine headaches for 29 years. They have ranged from mild to severe and keeping me at home for days. I was skeptical about the book at first, but a friend said it worked wonders for her daughter! So, I thought what could I lose. I did hate to give up a lot of my favorite foods. But they are not my favorite foods any longer. Not after the drastic change in how I feel. I had migraines a few times a week and am down to one once in a while(only because I ate something I should not have eaten). What a Difference!!!! I highly recommend this book to everyone that tells me they have headaches. I thank Dr. Buccholz for taking the time to research this area and not fall into the trap that so many neurologists do; which is throwing medicine at you to "fix" you.

Summary: keeping an open mind..
Review: I am keeping an open mind about this book. I'm not sure how important it is whether you're a 'lumper' or a 'splitter' as far as classifying headaches. And I have misgivings about the way the author dismisses scientific studies, even going so far as to say he doesn't care what others think. There are other diseases that have multiple 'triggers' or risk factors and yet there are still valid double-blind randomized studies evaluating therapeutic modalities. Failing this, observational studies can be of some merit, and finally expert opinion can be right even without rigorous evidence-based data, so I'd like to give Bucholz some leeway b/c of his experience in dealing with the most difficult patients.
There have been significant improvements in the treatment of migraine headaches over the last decade, the most publicized are the triptan agents, but I do think the next major treatment is a non-treatment, and that is to avoid the 'quick fixes' to avoid rebound headaches. Who knows, maybe dietary therapy is next.
I've only read about a hundred pages or so before handing it off to my most difficult migrainer today when she was coming in for her 'quick fix' shot. Maybe we'll make some progress, and I'll let you know how it all works out and when she and I finish the book.

Summary: A True Remedy
Review: I am pleased to have the opportunity to strongly endorse Dr. David Buchholz' recently published book Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain. My wife has suffered with severe migraine for several years and found no relief from consultation with many physicians. Since following Dr. Buchholz' philosophy and recommendations, she is essentially headache free except when she strays from the program. She no longer is dependent on medication which was becoming less and less effective.

Dr. Buchholz' book is well written and can provide wonderful results.

Summary: Everything you could want, and then some
Review: This is a very readable book, and it's packed with information. Dr. Buchholz answers all the questions you would want to ask in an office visit, plus the ones you would have thought of on the way home, the ones you forgot to ask, and a few that might never have occurred to you. The headache prevention diet covers everything from soup to nuts (literally). The clear and conversational writing style inspires confidence, and you are given an arsenal of tools for dealing with your headaches and the conviction that you really can get them under control.

Summary: Recipe Book for Healing the Headache.
Review: The book is fantistic. An easy, quick read, the logic is simple and inescapable...but more importantly, it works. After initially consulting with Dr. Buchholz and desperate for help, I am significantly better. I have read the book twice, and after another consult with Dr. Buchholz, I am doing even better, I have my life back. It is a miracle. The hell I endured for 8 weeks going cold turkey from all the prescriptive medications I depended on for 20 years, was actually a small price to pay, considering the devastation which characterized my life while medicated. Stop listening to caring, well-intentioned, otherwise competent physicians. Buy the book, read the book, follow the book.
