Rating: Summary: My Favorite Training Book Review: This is the greatest book on training for anyone who wants to think through and understand the concepts of training. It does not give step-by-step instructions in the way that some books do although it presents more than enough information to use it as such. I bought this book because I knew that Karen Pryor had trained dolphins. I had already mastered "sit", "go pee", "come", "get in the back", and "excuse me" with my dogs but was interested in training concepts in general that I could use with my ferret and sugar gliders (and any other critter I might add to my household). I will admit that I have not managed to use many of Karen's lessons with my sugar gliders. The upside is that my husband responds extremely well to her training methods. This is a great book for anyone who would like to work better with animals, grown people or little people!!
Rating: Summary: Poorly Written, Bad Information Review: Sooner or later, this fad will die out, mercifully. Dogs are not dolphins, to train them requires an understanding of who they are, not who we'd like them to be. I am a professional trainer and much of my practice is devoted to fixing problems caused by this book.
Rating: Summary: As entertaining as it is informative - - - Review: - - - this book offers suggestions and techniques anyone can use in all walks of life. Written in an "easy read" format, Don't Shoot The Dog nonetheless appeals to the professional and to the general public. Students of human psychology can also glean insight into behavior modification methods. Pryor's sense of humor and considerable experience makes this book a terrific tool for living in the world.
Rating: Summary: Don't Shoot the Dog! The new art of teaching and training Review: An excellent, well written book that helps explain why your canine friend behaves they way they do. It helps modify not only their behaviour but your's as well with simple pain free methods - positive reinforcement is a wonderful thing!
Rating: Summary: Very Poor Review: Not a good choice for someone looking for a good all around dog training book. Very few practical examples, hard to get into, too much is irrelevant to dogs. This book will be very little help for a novice dog owner looking to deal with your typical adolescent puppy problems. For those looking to have a better understanding and relationship with their dog, I would recommend "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for anyone wishing to train *any* animal! Review: This book is a must have for those who are interested in training and animal behavior. It applies to any animal you wish to train and will give you knowledge that you might pay a professional behaviorist hundreds of dollars to tell you! It will also make you realize that training animals is not as hard as was originally thought. I train parrots and the information in this book is right on. It even makes some of the so called pet bird behavior experts of today look like they don't know anything!
Rating: Summary: Breakthrough !!! Review: If I hadn't bought this book and tried it out ... I wouldn't have believed it ... Following K. Pryor's suggestions and judicious use of a clicker ... we taught our Beagle to do downs and waits ... our Labrador to do stays and toilet on command ... Just yesterday, we taught our Lab to do 'high fives' in the space of 5 minutes, and she remembers this morning ... I'm amazed ... Pryor's methods trains more than just animals ... it probably trained me !!!
Rating: Summary: A life changing book! Review: An amazing, informative read, Karen Pryor's book gives the reader behavioral theory rather than step by step instruction, allowing the reader to come up with training solutions for themselves. This book has changed the way I interact with my family, my friends, business associates, and last but not least, my dog.
Rating: Summary: language learning and positive reinforcement Review: I first learned of this book while volunteering at a raptor rehabilitation center. While I valued the techniques, I wondered what other areas of life I could use them in. A passion of mine was learning other languages. I then read about behavior chains and memorizing poems, etc. I then thought about using this technique to memorize basic phrases of some foreign language. I picked up a phrasebook for the russian language. I listened and repeated the phrases. After repeating the phrases, I then started to treat each phrase as a behavior chain. As I continued learning new material, I would then recall the previous phrase with ease. In a short amount of time I had learned the entire phrase book! I was tickled. As of this writing, I am taking a russian language class and have been passing with an ease I had never known. The professor is impressed with my ability to absorb the new material presented. I am now helping out in an English as a Second Language class and using the same techniques I used to learn Russian. The students have found learning to be painless. Before reading this book I had dreaded taking any structured class. I now find it a pleasure to learn and am now ready to pursue more classes at the local university. What a gift!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful help on all levels Review: I recently completed an internship at Wolf Park, a wolf research facility in Indiana. While we spent a great time learning about how to help these animals as an endangerd species we also had to somewhat get "inside thier heads". Don't Shoot the Dog was recomended reading at the park and gave us wonderful insight into the animal mind. After my internship I came back home and applied the techniques to my ferrets and my dog! The results were amazing. I think anyone who has any intrest in making a conection with thier pet will find this book more help than one can imagine.
