Summary: A dangerous leap of faith...
Review: Reviewer: J. Balbirnie from Philadelphia, PA. USA Dr. Bernstein's work has some extraordinary ideas, just imagine a physician AVAILABLE 24hrs. a day : O ? But much like this EXTREMELY radical concept in today's medical world, the Doctors foundational premise, is an act of faith. The idea he proposes of SEVERE reduction, elimination of "all carbohydrates" is not a realistic likelihood. How many would endure that insanity... without paying too great a price for this so called "normalcy" of blood sugar levels? It's a disease... hence, those who possess it by definition are not so called "normal". Will you wear the proverbial ~emperors "new clothes"~? If so this book, may well work for you. Despite several contradictory references, this book appears geared SINGULARLY toward the type 2 diabetics... Not of much (any?) significant value to type 1 folks. These are my opinions, they could be wrong... however I believe the doctor unfortunately is... (Would LOVE to be able to GET my physician 24/7 though.. for that idea alone he gets his 2 stars!)

Summary: Unconventional but brilliant approach - saved my life
Review: While his approach is unconventional, so is life with diabetes. Because I found out at a young age and now use this method to control my blood sugar, I'm excited that I may never require medication. My doctor recommended this book among others and advised me that living this way would be hard work. It is, but also completely worth it. BTW, once you are in the habit, it's not very hard anymore. I eat more lean (low fat) than the regimen requires, but the control of carbs has obviously controlled my blood sugar, cholesterol, and weight.

If your diabetic or love someone who is, you should read as much as you can and put this book at the top of the list.

Summary: EASY DOES IT!
Review: My mother has had diabetes for 61 years. Please read my other reviews on diabetes. I would like to share my experiences with you and be of some help.

My brother and I can't use this book except as a reference. It advocates a "high protein/low carbohydrate" diet which everybody who has studied nutrition knows is a horrible diet! On ther other side of the coin, experts in diabetic management know that this guy is a genuis! HIS PROGRAM WORKS! This is very perplexing. Am I supposed to put my mother on a diabetic program which nutritionists state is harmful. But which works beautifully. I'll have to read further research on this book. Right now, it is shelved for reference. I don't want my mother's diabetes managed if it's going to kill her kidneys and liver. If you are diabetic or are taking care of a diabetic - please buy this book. A worst case scenerio is that you will have a wonderful reference. And the best case scenerio (which I won't condone yet), is that you

will have the very best program for diabetes management. Good luck.

Summary: Not hard to do because the results are spectacular!
Review: I started this regimen about 3 months ago and I waited to post this until after I got my latest HbA1c: Jan. 2000 it was 8.0, last week it was 6.2!

I'm not craving carbs anymore, I'm not hungry all the time, I have great energy. My blood sugars are so stable, and so dramatically different than before I started this, that I am astounded.

Maybe this diet is not ideal for healthy humans, but we are not healthy and I am happy to make these adjustments to my life because the benefits are clear to me and they far outweigh any disadvantages.

BTW, my blood lipids would be the envy of 99% of the population. :-) This works.

Summary: Both the book and the authors' web site
Review: This book marked the crucial turning point in my Mom's diabetes management! After 3 years of losing the battle on officially recommended diet (her sugar steadily climbed up into 190-200 counts), we turned to Dr. Atkins' diet and stumbled on Dr. Bernsteins' book. The Diabetes Solution addresses every detail of diabetes management, enabling one to understand the mechanism of the disease and to master the techniques of lowering and leveling blood sugar. Dr. Bernsteins' web site is also a guide to other low carbohydrate diets - thus, it has led my Mom to glycemic index literature through which she now enriches her low-carb, high-protein diet with carbohydrates that do not increase her sugar level that much. My Mom is now able to control her sugar at the level of 120 - 130 counts and is hoping to achieve even more. Thank you, Dr. Bernstein!

Summary: It works for me!
Review: A year ago I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type II. I was scared, and upset. I couldn't believe what my doctor had told me. Not me! So, I decided to find out more about Diabetes, and the most effective treatment.

I found Dr. Berstein's book to be the best reference on Diabetes. He shares his knowledge from years of experimentation and self-treatment for his own diabetic condition.

This book has provided me with the information I needed to help lower my blood glucose from over 340 mg/dl to a normal range. I have given this book to other diabetics as gifts. They have also shown remarkable progress (my Mother and Uncle - both type I, insulin dependent).

All I can really say is - Thank you Dr. Bernstein.

Summary: It is the opposite of popular treatments!
Review: After reading this book I am alarmed. It is mostly the opposite of ALL others I have read on how to control Type 2 diabetes. It concerns me that Dr. Bernstein suggests no fruit. No carbs either. Ok, what's left besides protiens and fats? The jury is still out on this one folks. I know that new information/research is often rejected until proven, however, this is extreme.

Summary: It Gave Me an Alternative that Worked For Me
Review: This is a really great book, because it gave me a recipe for improving my diabetes! I was recently diagnosed as a Type I diabetic, and got very little help or education from my doctors on how to control this disease and avoid the terrible complications. Frustrated and scared, I reached out to this book (and others). I tried Dr. Bernstein's suggestions, including the low carb diet, and my insulin needs went way down and my blood sugar stays under 100 even after eating! I highly recommend other diabetics read this book and try it out. It takes discipline, but who wants to go blind or have a foot amputated? It's worth it. Good luck!

Summary: Hypertensives should read
Review: I followed this approach in order to reduce my essential hypertension. It took it down from 150/110 to 135/84 in just 3 weeks of following the doctors suggestions. I am not a diabetic, but the insulin/blood sugar link is beginning to be focused on for resolution of essential hypertension. It worked for me with ho medications.
