Summary: Excellent!
Review: I purchased this book for my mom who has been diagnosed with diabetes 25 years. She followed all the "golden rules" as prescribed by the medical mainstream community and never could achieve healthy blood sugar levels. She gained a lot of weight, eventually went on insulin and basically had a haphazard approach to her own diet as she felt very frustrated to put in so much effort and not getting the results that should have ensued according to the "experts."

After 3 months of following Bernstein's regimen, she has nearly eliminated the insulin shots and has for the first time, normal blood sugars (80-120) on a regular basis, and has lost 25 lbs.

Her doctor is thrilled as well. In addition to the weight loss and BSLs, her cholesterol, triglycerides have improved too.

The book is more than just about changing diet. It is an excellent reference for all types of diabetes-related concerns.

Summary: This book should be required required reading for ALL diabet
Review: This book should be required required reading for ALL diabetics. It had practical hints (such as re-use of needles -- oops, of course no diabetic ever does that!), how to better inject the insulin, how to test for sugar in foods when not sure of the recipe (such as restaurant fare -- ever wonder if you've been served a regular Coke rather than a diet Coke? or if the salad dressing is laden with sugar?) -- and it goes into detail of WHY the low-carb diet is healthier for a diabetic. I read this book, immediately gave it to my (type1) daughter...

Summary: DIABETES SOLUTION
Review: As a mother with two grils with diabetes, as a psychotherapist for adolescents (most with diabetes), as an educator in diabetes and as a teacher for educators in diabetes I am so greatful to Dr. Bernstein for sharing his long life experience as a type 1 diabetic, his knowledge and wisdom about it, that helped me to confront so many myths surrounding diet and diabetes and improve my own understanding of this chronic disease. My daughters have read it and, as adolescents, they found Diabetes Solution as a break through in their own knowledge of their diabetes, giving them selfassurance and strenght to face questions, anger and doubts. This book has become a must for my students and my patients and a gift for colleagues.

Summary: Needs to be REQUIRED READING for all diabetics
Review: I have had Type II diabetes for over 10 years and have had the usual struggle with my sugar level. I was taking several pills a day, then added insulin to those a couple of years ago. But, since reading and studying Dr. Bernstein's book over and over I have gained full control of my diabetes and only need a couple of shots and 1/2 pill a day. My blood sugar maintains a level of 80-110 99% of the time now. I have read and reread this book and always find something new in it I missed the first time. Very informative, very easy to understand - I would recommend that all doctors read this so they can give the RIGHT information to diabetics! You will be amazed at what Dr. Bernstein has discovered over his years of research and learning with his own diabetes. Please please read this and extend your life expectancy.

Summary: Britain's most sceptical Type 1 diabetic says BUY IT!!!
Review: Fed up of eating endless snacks and going on endless diets? Fed up of the seesaw of high and low blood sugars? Searching earnestly for a method of keeping blood sugar stable and of living a normal life with diabetes? Then buy this book IMMEDIATELY! I am sceptical Brit. I don't read diet books, I loathe fads and fashions and (dare I say it) I'm especially wary of miracle solutions from the United States. So no propaganda here! This American doctor's method has, I can assure you, quite literally changed my life: normal blood sugars, normal cholesterol and a much better ability to concentrate are all consequences of my following his recommendations. His method is tough, it requires real discipline and it means you'll have to say goodbye to a LOT of foods you like. It's also radically different from much of the official advice on the treatment of this disease. But it's a regime that truly works and restores freedom and dignity to diabetics. Don't waste your money on any other book about diabetes: this is the only one you'll need. America awake!

Summary: Helpful, But Excessively Rigid
Review: As a Type I Diabetic for 25 years, I recently decided to do some additional research and tighten my own control a little. Though I have had zero complications thus far, I realized that I'd let things slip a little (lack of self discipline). Reading this book was part of that education process.

First, I would say that during the period of time when Dr. Bernstein was diagnosed a Diabetic, there was little information about good control. So I commend him for his self experimentation and what he was able to accomplish. He definitely was leading the medical establishment at finding "a" method of good control. But he didn't find the ONLY method to achieve good control.

While the almost total elimination of carbohydrates (only 6 gm of the slow acting kind is recommended for breakfast) will indeed prevent post-meal Blood Sugar (BS) spikes, it's unnecessarily rigid. Bernstein's goal of keeping the BS in a more narrow range than even many non-diabetics has not been shown in any studies (his anecdotal evidence is not convincing) to be necessary to prevent diabetic complications. Studies clearly show that long-term elevated BS levels cause problems, but there is no evidence that post-meal levels of 140-150 (which Bernstein considers unacceptable) is at all damaging.

Dr. Bernstein in one place boasts of not having eaten any fruit for 25 years. He's free to make that choice, but I refuse to give up the pleasure of a fresh apple, my daily banana, or an occasional bowl of strawberries. Just because I'm a Diabetic doesn't mean I have to forsake all the eating pleasures of life. In moderation, and by properly balancing carbohydrate intake with insulin doses I'm able to eat almost any food I want without reaching damaging levels of BS.

I agree with Bernstein in some areas. Reducing the portions of carbohydrates is helpful for good control (I generally have 30 - 40 gm per meal). Multiple small insulin dosages is better than one or two large ones. Exercise is important. Frequent BS testing is essential. His book also includes good practical advice on a variety of things that a Diabetic would find helpful. For these reasons, I can recommend this book (with the above caveats) with a 3-star rating.

Summary: This book gives HOPE to those who think they are victims
Review: I am a 59 year old man that discovered I had type II diabetes about 2 years ago. My wife and I have health insurance that is catastrophic only making any illness a budget buster unless we're about to die. So, what we do is buy or check out books. My wife has helped me with this condition with 7 books to read. I also went to my physician after reading 6 of them with limited results. Then I got Diabetes Solution. Several people were impressed with this book... first of all me. My blood sugars are now in an acceptable range. Others that were impressed were my physician and my wife due to the results that have been my blessing within about 4 months. But the GREATEST benefit of all, is that I understand the disease! This enables me to deal with it accurately and effectively. This book is the best of them all. I cannot tell you how much it has meant to me to have control over my disease. My physician said my blood was looking better than some non-diabetics that come to his office. I think the fact that this author is a type I diabetic has given him a real gift at communicating to others the effective way to treat this disease. My compliments to Dr. Bernstein!

Summary: Carboless for a year
Review: I know I am adding my review to a large number of others but I had to say Dr. Bernstein saved my life. I was thinking I wouldn't live long enough to raise my children. I have two natural children that are grown but I also have two adopted children that are only 12 and 13 years old. I now know that I will be healthy and strong and I am eternally greatful. Thankyou Dr. Bernstein.

Summary: Turn Your Life Around with Dr. Bernstein's Help
Review: I am ordering the recent update of Dr. Bernstein's book because my 1997 version is worn out through the reading and re-reading of it by me and beloved family and friends. His first book defined the underlying causes of the problems I had experienced for nearly 20 years with so-called "normal" blood glucose levels, those measured by blood test in my yearly physical. Moreover, his explanations and descriptions explained my father's slow and devastating dying from Type II Diabetes. His advice and recommendations have altered for the best my mother's 30-year experience with Type II (as well as her HDL's, her blood pressure, her triglycerides). From being on the verge of several insulin shots a day, she has had her oral medications consistently reduced over the last 3 years; and, in particular, her increasing dementia has disappeared. At nearly 80, she is more healthy than at 50, and this book, with its explicit recommendations for diet and exercise and its explanations of the symptoms and causes of this most insidious of diseases, is the sole reason. Unrecognized by my other physicians, hyperinsulinemia began eating away at my own health more than 20 years ago, but thanks to my instituting Dr. Bernstein's blood testing methods and his diet and other recommendations, I may never even have to take oral medications, according to my present internist. (When I called Dr. Bernstein's clinic to get info about a glucometer, he himself answered the phone, well after 5 p.m.--I was speechless with astonishment. His personal recommendation then to me has helped not only me but at least three others directly!) This is a book by a most remarkable man and doctor, who truly can give the diabetic or those seriously at risk for diabetes the chance for quality of life and health that most other practitioners do not. Anyone who has the disease (or loves someone who has it) should spend the time in reading his book before losing eyesight, feet, legs, mental acuity, and more, all the ultimate results of failure to control diabetes.

Summary: I'd like to review the book and the solution please
Review: Most of the reviews of this books are either 1* or 5* depending on whether one sees Dr. Bernstein as a crackpot or a savior. I'd like to address the content of the book. I rate this book high because it was well laid out and easy to ready. It begins with a chemistry of digestion, laying the groundwork for his theories. It then goes into typical foods. One is provided with a clear simple list of no-no foods. Then one is led into sample menus so you can clearly see how flexible the diet is or is not. There are several chapters specifically geared to unique situations. Then a chapter with recipes. A couple of appendices. Simple -- logical -- clear By the way, I've tried this since last March because my blood sugars had finally moved into suspicious range. I've lost 15 pounds and some fatty deposits on my liver (there since 1990 and obvious on yearly cat scans) are gone. My blood sugars went back to normal, but my cholesterol remains a bit high.
