Summary: If you or a loved one has diabetes you MUST read this
Review: I do long range underwater cave exploration. I cannot afford *any* chance of hypoglycemic reactions, so I've tried to control diabetes w/ diet and exercise. I was loosing. My sugar was averaging 300, fasting at 190-215, peaks after 100% ADA recommended meals from 350-450. Exercising was becoming harder, if not impossible. Started the 0 carb diet on Wed morning. Its now Tue the following week. Fasting sugars are at 117, average is about 100, peaks at about 122. The first day, the average was down 100 points. Its been going down 10 every day since. I used to have to wait 1 or 2 days between 5 mile runs. Starting thr after the diet I did 2 a day. I've run every day since, sometimes twice a day, and have more energy. I think Dr. Bernstein has quite possibly extended my life by 20-40 years. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Summary: NOTHING worked for me - not even insulin - until this book!
Review: I spent 14 years trying to control my blood sugars and went from pills to diets and insulins and new medications and nothing worked. I soon learned why, when I bought this book upon recommendation. Eliminating a majority of carbohydrates from my diet resulted in a huge reduction in blood sugar levels within THREE DAYS! I've remained in control and will be completely off insulin soon. I wish I could buy this book for every Diabetic in the country! Failing that, I pray that others will read it before they are too damaged from all of the neuropathies of Diabetes.

Summary: Allowed me to normalize blood sugars in just over a month
Review: I was diagnosed with diabetes on December 20, 1997. I was 33 years old 5' 9 1/2" tall, and 242 lbs in weight. My blood sugar was 300. My doctor immediately placed me on insulin. After the initial anger, denial, and tears, I began doing my own research. This book was one that I came across. Dr. Bernstein's concepts seemed to agree with other concepts that I had seen in other texts. I tested some of his ideas by testing my blood sugar before and after a breakfast of Cheerios w/ skim milk and an alternative breakfast of turkey bacon. Dr. Bernstein's assertions tested true. I have begun a daily exercise program of 30 minutes per day and have switched my diet as suggested to a low carbohydrate diet. It is very difficult to give up or severely limit bread, rice, corn, potatoes, etc., but after a while it becomes easier. The results? It is now February 22. I have lost more than 25 lbs. My blood sugars are now constantly in the 70-90 range. I am currently only taking 8 units of insulin daily (as opposed to 25) and that number continues to decrease as I lose weight. I can't yet validate the cholesterol/triglycerides/HDL/LDL claims made in the book, because I won't have my next blood test until the end of March, but I expect these to show similarly predictable results. I strongly recommend that any diabetic who has not discovered what a low carbohydrate diet can do for their blood sugar control read this book.

Summary: This book has made my diagnosis of diabetes bearable.
Review: I read this book from cover to cover after discovering the first of August that at 36 I have diabetes. I went through a very real mourning period, but then began to search for more information, which is how I found this book. It is down to earth and easy to read/follow. I am not insulin-dependent, but do take oral medication. The Diabetic Solution has helped me not only keep my sugar under fairly tight control, but has also made it possible for me to lose weight and understand what is going on with my body. It is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to every diabetic.

Summary: Library Journal review is for wrong book
Review: The Library Journal review for this book is clearly for another book published 13 years earlier than this one. It should be deleted.

Summary: Astounding amounts of information
Review: For the 18 years I have been a Type 1diabetic, I have not found a more comprehensive source of information on diabetes, which has often frustrated me. This book gives a very thorough picture of the issues related to diabetes, and not only as it relates to diet. It even encompasses things like foot care and other issues diabetics might face. The book was somewhat scary to me as I finally understood what my average blood sugars read (A1c tests) and I found that my own average was 200. I am finding that my insulin use is not great for control, and that this diet is likely to get me there. I am somewhat uncomfortable with the low carb thing, but having tried it for the past week, I find it to be not so bad, and my blood sugar levels are decreasing. My doctor handed me this book, and insisted I try it. What I especially like is the detailed information on how to adjust insulin based on your own metabolism. This is information no one has bothered to discuss with me all this time.

Summary: Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
Review:
I recently found out that my sugar was high during a routine visit to my doctor.

They wanted to put me on medicine but I refused beliving that they had make a mistake with my test.

After reading this book I decided to buy a glucose meter and test it myself. The results really scared me and I was determined to bring the levels down. This book gave me hope that Diabetes can be reversed or at least controlled without medicine.

I am thankful that I chose to read this book and was enlightened by all of the valuable infomation that it contained.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been diagnosed, I consider it a lifesaver.

Thank you,
J. C.

Summary: Tough Practical Approach
Review: This book has a tough approach but is highly through and very informative.
Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.
S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.
Lowering your carb intake will also help in preventing cholesterol. So, on the whole taking precautions and remedial steps can keep off a lot of adversities. Dr. Atkins's book has been a real help.
