Rating: Summary: Farewell Weight Watchers! Review: I first learned of this book from the Suzanne Somers book - "Get Skinny Eating Fabulous Foods". I decided that before I launched off on some totally new way of eating (I've been on low fat/high carbs for years) that I would learn more about the principles behind Ms. Somers' book. I've never been overweight by any of the charts and never more than 15 or so pounds over my own ideal weight of 130 (I'm 5'9" tall) and I have amazing cholesteral readings (I'm 56 years old). For several years I have had an uncontrollable problem of binge eating at night. I would eat until my stomach bulged and ached but always wanted more to eat - never satisfied. Just a bit over a year ago my weight was at its highest point ever - 146 lbs. So I joined Weight Watchers (WW) and over a 3 month period I lost 16 lbs. However, the experience was just another agonizing way focusing my life around food and eating out was a nightmare. I got to the point that I refused to go out to eat at all - because I would feel like a WW failure. Then my weight started creeping up again - the nighttime binge eating had never gone away. Then I found the Somers book that lead me to Dr. Schwarzbein's book. What an amazing discovery! I've been following her eating principles for about 4 weeks and my weight has dropped back to 130 lbs. I feel wonderful; don't focus on food; have lost my cravings for all the carbs I used to eat; and the most wonderful thing is that the night time binge eating has ceased (no willpower needed or used). I had stopped my exercise program about 4 years ago but now I'm getting back into a light exercise routine that is primarily walking and weight lifting at home. So, thank you to Suzanne Somers and Dr. Schwarzbein! Now my big challenge is to get my husband "eating right" so he can lower his huge cholesteral levels.
Rating: Summary: This program made me GAIN 10 lbs Review: I followed this program very carefully and gained 10 lbs on it. Back to Weight Watchers for me.
Rating: Summary: The Swarzbein Principle Review: I was a participant in the original cholesterol study in Seattle in 1975. I was then, and have been until now more than 30 % over my ideal weight. I was told by clinical experts that the only way to reduce cholesterol is by a low fat diet and cholesterol medication. However after 25 years I still have high bad cholesterol, low good cholesterol and very high triglycerides. I am simply amazed at this book and the remarkable results that can be acheived by following the described plan. I wonder why so many MD's are so against this approach. Cholesterol lowering medication costs me on average over $125 per month. I have spent over $30,000 in medication over the years to lower cholesterol, and it still has not worked. This book has shown me that fat is not the culprit, but sugars and insulin resistance. God bless Dr. Swarzbein.
Rating: Summary: Don't Discount Vitamins Review: I have been following Dr. Schwarzbein's advice for about five months now, and the change in quality of life has been incredible. I would recommend two things. 1) Do not discount vitamins/minerals. When I finally got around to buying the right kinds of supplements, with the correct amounts of each vitamin/mineral, my energy got an additional boost and I could tell right away that my inch-loss picked up again. Many vitamins directly contribute to the metabolizing of food into energy. And even if you eat very well, you are likely to need more because of stress and other environmental factors. 2) Do not skip over the recommendation about hormonal replacement therapy. Many assume that this is relevant only for pre-menopausal women and only means estrogen replacement. This is not true. The hectic lifestyles most of us are leading today contribute to serious hormonal imbalances early in life. Even if you are only in your thirties or forties, you might want to consult an endocrinologist, particularly if you notice that despite eating well, you still have difficulty losing weight around the midriff and are gaining a lot of weight in the run-up to your period (my case). Many young women today suffer from estrogen dominance, which contributes to these and many other problems (including PMS, infertility, migraines, irregular periods, etc.). A good book to start with is Lee's What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Natural Progesterone: Balancing Your Hormones and Your Life Between Thirty and Fifty. He also gives very specific recommendations on the amounts of vitamins/minerals a woman should take take. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Read this book! Review: If you've been dieting (eating low-fat foods) and working out, and you can't understand why you're not losing weight--Read this book! As I read each page, I couldn't believe how I was inadvertantly ruining my metabolism and my body. This book explains why eating all the fat-free, aspartame (sugar-substitute) foods can actually cause your body to store excess fat. Each chapter was a revelation! Everything really makes sense too. I wish I read this book a few years ago! I want to give Dr. Schwarzbein a big hug!
Rating: Summary: UPDATE Review: I have been doing the "Schwarzbein Principle" exactly 6 weeks -- I have lost 13 lbs, am down a dress size, bra size and cup size and the doc has cut my diabetes medicine dosage in half and hopefully when I go back in 2 months -- that will be it -- along with the B/P medicine. My B/P dropped another 2 points -- and all with no excercise. I feel absolutely wonderful. Try it for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Schwarzbein's Principle works wonders Review: I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic 16Nov99 after a routine medical exam, and two fasting blood sugar tests. I was advised to read "The Schwarzbein Principle" by a friend, (also diabetic). The book is easy to read, and makes sense! There is nothing I had to re-read in order to understand the concepts discussed in the book. The information is presented in a logical flow, and when applied to my life brought amazing results. I am doing what Dr. Schwarzbein writes about and without doing any exercise, (this has to change) or doing any blood tests for six weeks, through the Christmas season, I was able to bring my Fasting blood sugar back into the normal range. I went to my doctor's office 29Dec99 performed a blood test after fasting for fifteen hours and my test result was 5.2 (the previous tests were 14, 16.1). My wife and I will stay on the program, in fact we purchased the Dr.'s cookbook as well. Thank You Dr. Schwarzbein!
Rating: Summary: IT WORKS! Review: I received this book for Christmas and started eating as few carbs as possible on Sunday, the next day. Within 2 days I no longer had that desire to look for something to eat before meal time. I could not believe it. Now, 2 weeks later the biggest thing that I have noticed is that my waist area has firmed up and is alot less "jiggely". I was 186 lbs. I weighed myself this AM-183. I am staying away from the sugars and breads and drinking mostly water. For a business lunch the other day I ordered a grilled chiken sandwich with bacon. When it came I removed it from the roll, had some coleslaw, a pickle and water. The book is so easy to read, makes so much sense, and explains WHY things happen in your body. This book is GREAT and anyone with a desire to become healthier and feel better, I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Comments from Oregon Review: I have lost 50 lbs. since the 1st of August. I began eating lo-carb when I read Suzanne Sommers new book and quickly switched to the Schwartzbein Principle after reading the Doctor's book. I am in my 50's, female, and have been very obese for years and have struggled with various weight loss methods all of my adult life. This book seems almost like a miracle to me. I have been taken off one of my blood pressure meds, I have more energy, I look and feel better and I don't crave sweets! I do intend to continue to follow the Schwartzbein Principle as closely as I can and I know that one day in the not too far future, I will be normal weight. I never thought that could happen. Thank you, Dr. Schwartzbein!
