Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE
Review: By all accounts I look like a normal healthy person. But over the last few years I started having all sorts of health issues crop up. Blood sugar problems, addictions, cravings, depression, fatigue, chronic headaches, major pms and irregular menses, not to mention bloating, weight gain and the crowning blow was recurrent yeast infections that modern meds just were not affecting. I found this book ironically via Suzanne Somers book which I was perusing in a book store. I ordered the Schwarzbein Principle right here at Amazon. And I am so glad I did. I have read and re-read this book so many times I think I might need to replace it soon! Diana Schwarzbein's book focused my attention back on what was truly important and that is overall health. I appreciated the in-depth discussions about everything from heart-disease and cholesterol to diabetes and hormone imbalances. The emphasis is on healing your metabolism and then your ideal body composition will follow. This is not a quick weight loss plan, it is to heal your body for health and longevity, which does include natural weight loss if your body truly needs to lose weight.

I feel great, I look great and I do not have extremes in emotion, fluctuations in energy or intense cravings. The need for stimulants is gone. The need to be consoled by food is gone. Plus I am developing lean body mass. For the first time in my life I have a physical yearning to exercise. To move the muscle because it feels good. That is a switch from the "I gotta exercise to get fit" mentality that I struggled with for years because I never had the energy to even get out the door let alone sustain exercise over time! Now when I wake up in the morning the first thing I think about is what fun thing will I do today to move my body.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone no matter what their current weight, health or body issues are. It simply is the way everyone should eat all of the time... for life.

Summary: Good program, but the book is too long.
Review: This book is much too long for what it has to say. I was convinced by page 28 that it was a good idea, the next 200 pages are just additional justifications; the last 140 pages explain the program. It could have been all done in 200 pages.

I liked the references to medical literature in the back. It helped convince me that this was not someone with another fad program.

Trying the program also helped. I've lost 5 lbs in three weeks, but the real gain is in the inches I've lost around my waist. Clothes that I could barely put on at the beginning, fit well now.

Summary: A cure for cholesterol problems
Review: I bought this book a year ago for my mother who was worried about her high cholesterol. She had already tried a natural product to reduce her cholesterol but it didn't work. The doctor wanted her to use another cholesterol-reducing medication, but it had serious side-effects involving the liver and she didn't want to take it. She was quite depressed over her health. When I came across this book on Amazon I sent it to her. Well, after three months on the Schwarzbein plan, her bad cholesterol had reduced dramatically. The good cholesterol was up. Now, after a year, she got another cholesterol check and the nurse told her that her results were "disgustingly normal!"

My mother is thrilled, she's slimmed down and has energy. She's in her mid-60s and has a new lease on life, all because of a change in her diet. It's a simple diet, too. What's not to like about this plan? It truly works. If only doctors nationwide would stop throwing pills at patients and look into this wonderful plan.

Summary: Not a "fad" diet
Review: Although this book is based on a low carbohydrate eating plan that appears to be the latest "fad," it is not really a diet, but a way of life. The book provides a lot of medical background and research and I love the way she finally explains "insulin resistance." She also explains in detail about what makes your metabolism tick, how to improve it and make it fully functionable despite any havoic you caused by yo-yo dieting. If you are interested in an eating plan where you lose weight slowly but surely, keep it off, never feel hungry or starved and feel GREAT then this book/plan is for you.

Summary: A must have handbook book for the human Body
Review: Whatever you do, read this book. It is like a handbook of our bodies. I have lost weight, gained muscle mass, reduced my cholesterol, lowered my blood pressure by applying these life-saving actions outlined in this awesome book. I highly recomend this to all, not just those with afflictions.

Summary: Finally! A Sensible Diet Book!
Review: Dr. Schwarzbein's book is a godsend for the public, and for health professionals like myself who always receive very puzzled looks from clients when they're told that fat is good for them, and that high carb foods are not.

The good Dr. approaches the issue of body chemistry from a physiological standpoint, and not from the "double-blind" study standpoint. She wisely points out that no study is ever perfect and that different studies yield different results, interpretations, and conclusions. Physiology, however, is more cut and dried. Her clear explanations of how hormonal imbalance leads to a cascade of harmful consequences helps the reader see very quickly the shortcomings of following the "Food Pyramid."

One complaint: Dr. Schwarzbein constantly recommends only "real foods," as opposed to "man-made" ones. Curiously, she gives the thumbs up to such "man-made" concoctions as commercial mayonnaise (made from canola oil), canola oil, and soy "sausages." Ersatz soy foods are some of the most heavily processed foods out there. Why she has them in menu suggestions is beyond me.

All in all, however, a very good book.

Summary: Schwarzbein on time
Review: Last December my doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. He spelled out all the horrible things that come from it, told me to exercise, eat right, get my eyes checked regularly, watch my feet for injuries, and gave me prescriptions for blood pressure and cholesterol medications. That was pretty sobering. He just assumed I knew what "eating right" was. For me it was the high carb, low fat, low protien diet way of eating I had been following for decades. Then my sister, a physician, told me about THE SCHWARZBEIN PRINCIPLE, which a patient had given her. It was a god-send for me. I immediately began to follow Dr. Schwarzbein's recommendation for healing my insulin resistance--the immediate cause of type 2 diabetes--and since mid January my fasting glucose readings have been in the mid 90's, miles from the 140 readings of last fall that were the basis of the diabetes diagnosis. Not to mention, following Schwarzbein's food and exercise recommendations 30 pounds came off almost without trying. And without using my doctor's blood pressure and cholesterol meds, my blood pressure is now in a good range and my cholesterol readings better than they have been in a decade. Schwarzbein does an amazing job of explaining and teaching with plenty of examples from real people. My doctor had left me with message that my genes were to blame for my diabetes. THE SCHWARZBEIN PRINCIPLE has liberated and empowered me to take this diabetes bull by the horns and and make some real progress in restoring my insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance by eating a balance of proteins, the right fats, and complex carbohydrates, and cutting way back on refined carbohydrates, processed foods and sugar. It's a whole new ball game, thanks to Dr. Schwarzbein.

Summary: An Amazing Book
Review: This is the best plan for eating wonderful food, losing weight, and getting healthy! Impossible to recommend it enough. Dr. Schwarzbein is amazing in person, too.

Summary: This Plan Really Works
Review: After two babies and twenty years of eating fat-free, high carbohydrate meals - I found myself 53 pounds overweight. Feeling sluggish, constantly craving sugar, and being rather moody I decided to try the zero carbohydrate diet. Fortunately, a friend told me about Schwarzbein's book as I was starting the Atkins diet. To prepare, I had to shop twice and change my way of cooking. I stopped eating out of the pantry and started eating out of the refrigerator. It took a few weeks to figure it out but Schwarzbein's meal plans were a tremendous help. My husband looked at me as if I was crazy: eating steak and salad 6 nights in a row, eggs and sausage for breakfast, cheese and nuts for snacks, and chicken picatta for lunch. Within one week of starting I felt much better. Within 9 months I lost 43 pounds (I do cardio 4 times a week for 40 minutes and lift weights too). Went from a size 16 to a size 6. Unfortunately, sugar (which I now know is HIGHLY addictive), got to me around the holidays and I put on 10 pounds in 4 months. I am back on track now and look forward to peeling off the remaining weight and returning to my new energetic self.

Summary: This book changed my life
Review: At age 50, I wanted to rid myself of the 33 pounds I have put on over 12-15 years, but refused to resort to fad diets or pills. This book fully explains how your body reacts to what you eat. I changed to eating 'real' foods (butter, eggs, beef, ..), substituted refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, ..) with whole grains, eliminated refined sugars and somewhat eliminated artificial things (diet soda, ...) form my life. It is most amazing. I lose one or a half pound every week no sense of deprivation, and truthfully, a feeling of well being that astounds me. There is no reason why a person could not follow the nutrition advise offered by Dr. Schawrzbein for their life and continue to feel better and better. My blood pressure, although never really high, has dropped in the several months I have been eating in this healthy awy, and next month I will get a blood test at my annual check up to see my cholesteral numbers. This book is not a diet book. It tells you how to heal yourself from the cellular level. Not a quick read, but interesting reading and well worth it.
