Rating: Summary: GOOD BOOK Review: I became a devotee of the low carb way of eating after reading many different books on the subject. Dr Scharzbein explained it better than anyone else by far. I wanted to loose 8 pounds and see if I could get more energy. After a couple of months I had lost 16 pounds! Now I am adding a few more carbs back in to stabilize my weight. I feel better than I ever have in my whole life(I am 53), even better than when I was a child! Some day Dr. Schwarzbein and others like her will finally get the recognition they so richly deserve. Don Rehberg, Albany, Georgia
Rating: Summary: I have a question to ask about this diet? Review: I am presently reading this book and am thrilled to hear that what my mother always told me was true. I have started to try to follow her methods and have encouraged my husband to also , but... I have recently heard that this diet has caused heart problems in some people. Is there any truth to this? If so what exactly is the cause? I would be interested in knowing if anyone has experienced this or heard this?
Rating: Summary: What am I doing wrong? Review: I have faithfully followed this plan for over three months and have not lost any weight nor body fat. It is very discouraging because, although I realize that years of low fat dieting have destroyed my metabolism, I expected that I would see at least a little improvement, when I compare my situation to some of the example patients in her book. Although my blood sugars are normal, I had three gestational diabetic pregnancies. That was when I first began to gain significant weight, not before. Dr. Schwarzbein does not address this subject in her book, and I wonder if I am eating too many carbohydrates on the healing plan. My OB-GYN considers me a "borderline" diabetic, but Dr. S. says there is no such thing- you either are or aren't. So does a history of gestational diabetes, with normal readings between pregnancies, make me a diabetic? Does anyone know how to contact her?
Rating: Summary: The best book with the best writing on the subject! Review: Books on weight loss and nutrition are often eitherimpenetrable or sappy, loaded with science that confuses the reader orfilled with platitudes. This book is really informative, highly intelligent and engrossing. You will move through it quickly because the stories and principles are so well developed and easy to read. You will finish it feeling really comfortable with the basics on metabolism and knowing how to eat sensibly and lose the weight you want to lose. This is the best book on the subject.
Rating: Summary: Great book!! Review: This is truly the only way to live. Dr. Schwarzbein's plan helps cut cravings and addictions in addition to helping you lose weight. I plan to stay on this program for the rest of my life, and I have to laugh when I hear mainstream advice about lowering weight and cholesterol with a low-fat, high- carb regimen. When will they learn?
Rating: Summary: It works!! Review: I've been on the Scwarzbein diet for about a month now and I've never felt better. I'm not sure how much weight I've lost because I don't have a scale, but I've taken my belt in a notch. For the last 15 years I gained and lost weight on low-fat diets while always being hungry and tired. Now I eat as much as I want of the right kinds of foods and my appetite is under control while I lose weight and have more energy (I no longer feel like I need a nap mid-afternoon). It works!
Rating: Summary: After 3 days on the diet my body breathed a sigh of relief. Review: Consider this: everything you thought you knew about nutrition just might be wrong. After years of watching my weight and my cholesterol creep ever higher (despite my low fat diet!) I began reading The Schwarzbein Principle with a great deal of skepticism. Gradually the book won me over with its straightforward explanations of biochemical pathways, metabolism, insulin levels, and food cravings. Quite simply, it made a lot of sense. I've been on the diet for about a month now and I no longer crave sugar or carbohydrates. I've lost a few pounds, but more importantly, I'm losing inches and it's a pleasure to see my "insulin meter" tummy disappearing. Best of all, I have incredible energy and a delicious sense of wellbeing, which I attribute to a healthy supply of seretonin. The healing plan menu at the end of the book is especially useful. My regular physician would probably have a fit if he knew I was on this diet. I may have to fire him.
Rating: Summary: Flies in the face of conventional "diet" wisdom Review: A must for everyone who has been on the no-fat, low-fat, low carbo diets. I am a veteran of the diet wars so I was especially skeptical of Dr. Schwarzbein's advice. After all, everyone tells you that you can't lose weight unless you cut out the fat. However, I have been following her eating plan for about 5 weeks now and I feel better than I have in ages. I have so much energy. The best part is eating real food -- butter, real sour cream, real cottage cheese. I haven't eaten these foods with the fat since I was a kid! I highly recommend this book to everyone and have to several friends, one of whom is borderline diabetic. You should also try her cookbook -- the recipes are fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Spectacular new road to optimal health and weight! Review: Thank you, Dr. Schwarzbein, for a new body. In a year, by carefully following this simple, sensible, satisfying way of eating, I lost 97 pounds. My blood pressure normalized. My internist is amazed, and has me coaching his patients on The Schwarzbein Principle! My friends who have failed on other programs, or who have successfully lost weight only to regain it, have had the same wonderful experience with TSP that I have had. We think it should have been titled, "The Schwarzbein Miracle"!
Rating: Summary: A very informative and useful book! Review: Dr. Schwarzbein turns the conventional thinking about high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets upside-down. Her explanation of insulin resistance was easy to understand and made lots of sense. I found the dietary information in this book very useful in diminishing the pain of AIDS medication-related neuropathy and lipodystrophy, even though the book wasn't written for that purpose. I don't have blood tests to see how it's impacted my cholesterol or trygycerides but I'm looking forward to them. This book is a great example of how a maverick thinker can rescue people from the tyranny of bad science and the pop-health culture.
