Summary: This book is unbelievable. You have to give it a shot!!
Review: The techniques is this book are almost too effective that you stop doing them after the first time you try them since you think you are fixed. They stop pain immediately, unless you have really ripped your ligaments into 2 pieces or there is no cartilage left at all.

Summary: Fad exercises
Review: These exercises are good for people with a lot of spare time, eg. pensioners. One has to do at least twelve exercises which take too long to complete. The "supine groin stretch" takes one and a half hours(45 minutes each leg). The "static back" takes another 30 to 45 minutes. Others are very hard to perform eg the "air bench". Finally some exercises are common hatha yoga asanas eg "downward dog" and "cats & dogs".
Mr. Egoscue makes a number of claims about his method which remind me of the incredible claims of Chinese Qigong "masters".
I would not spend so much time for some exercises that may not work at all.

Summary: Works brilliantly
Review: This book has a very simple premise: that optimally calibrated motion, not simply exercise, is the key to pain-free existence.
I've used the exercises in the book for a month now, and my chronic neck, shoulder, and write pain have diminished greatly. Whereas most regimens emphasize strength and relaxation, this book emphasizes that proper motion may require different muscles and different motions than you may be used to. In particular, you may have to retrain your body to use the strong, latent muscles that a sedentary lifestyle neglects.

A masterpiece, simply put.

Summary: EXTRAORDINARY BOOK
Review: This book is OUTSTANDING! Try it and you will never feel pain again!

Summary: wow almost
Review: This book is used as a textbook for a physical education course at the Northern Virginia Community College. The course name and description are:
Topics in: Functional Training
Course covers postural and joint movement assessment & specific exercise techniques to correct deficiencies of strength development or range of motion that may cause injury ond discomfort.

Although I have not started the course yet I have read the book and tried some of the exercises. For me the section on shoulders was most relevant. As a weight trainee I had been having difficulty fully extending my left arm above my head while lifting. One of the diagnostic movements in the book suggested that I had a tightness and/or misalignment in the shoulder that could be the problem. Performing the shoulder movements described in the book brought about almost instant relief. For that I am grateful.

However, the author is not content to confine himself to what he does well which is to describe E-cises (his terminology). He makes a few statements which are not only false, but which could be dangerous.

His statement that "You cannot drink too much water." was proven false a few years ago by some misguided parents who disciplined their children by forcing them to drink water in excessive amounts. I think the resulting death of one of the children pretty much disproves his statement. The problem is not the water per se, but the resulting electrolyte imbalance. Perspiring profusely and only drinking plain water can result in an electrolyte imbalance. The symptoms include a tingling sensation.
It is real. I experienced it one time. Despite many "experts" who advocate plain water I know that there are those among us who would do better following the advice in OPTIMAL MUSCLE RECOVERY by Edmund R. Burke, PhD.

Egoscue sees nothing wrong with impact -- as in high impact aerobics. I do. Also, he is so into using proof by evolution that he uses it as an explanation for any personal opinion for which he can cite no good scientific study. And if evolution doesn't explain it then look for some body misalignment as a cause for a problem. My opinions on impact are these: 1. If it causes pain, don't do it. 2. While a little bit of impact may be good it is easy to overdo and if overdone can cause irreversible damage. It doesn't matter if the people in your family tree didn't evolve with aerobics in mind or if you have some body misalignment. Years of running on hard surfcess have left me with arthritic knees which have resulted in knee operations. One orthopedic surgeon told me that had I been a couch potato the operations would not be needed until thirty more years. Using the evolution argument of which Egoscue is so fond I propose that humans did not evolve on flat concrete or asphalt. They evolved walking on soft irregular surfaces. The universities in the state of Oregon which have produced several outstanding runners credit the use of soft wood chip running paths for part of their success. Likewise, running sand dunes has worked for Australian runners.
Then too there are some people who should limit impact activities because of uncorrectable defects such as bowlegs or knock knees, or because of excess weight, or because of weak cartilage caused by the body's using the amino acid cystine rather than the chemically similar amino acid arginine when constructing cartilage.
This book is definitely a good read. Give the E-cises a try. Just don't blindly accept everything the author says. Like most of us he gets a little full of himself at times.

Summary: Wow.
Review: This book was recommended by a friend who has had amazing results with the Egoscue techniques. Before I ordered it, I read all of the reviews on Amazon and it was highly recommended there as well. This book is amazing. Everything in it makes sense and the exercises are simple and so effective. If you have any pain in your body....anywhere....order this book.

Summary: Pain Free changed my life
Review: This easy-to-read book was recommended to me last summer by my daughter-in-law. Because of scoliosis, I suffered from back pain all my life. Following Pete Egoscue's recommendations, I am now free of all hip, back, and shoulder pain, and I've increased my height by one-half an inch. Although the exercises take time and committment, the results are well worth it. I also recommend his book for computer users: Pain Free at Your PC. For a more in-depth explanation of Pete's techniques and how you can diagnose yourself, read The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion.

Summary: A great book on pain... but irritating to read.
Review: This is a great book on eliminating pain, but if you are a Christian and believe that God created man, you will probably find Egoscue's extensive references to Darwinism and evolution to be irritating and unnecessary. As there are not a lot of books that truly help those with chronic pain, I recommend this book; however, I did find it quite annoying to read.

Summary: Better than yoga for 35 year old runner with hip pain
Review: This is an excellent book! A true solution to chronic pain, not just hype and promises never kept. Egoscue is right on the money with his excercises. In my humble opinion, the exercises fire muscle spindle cells which are receptors in the muscles and joint mechano-receptors which are receptors in joints. Increasing the firing of receptors increases the firing of impulses to the brain. Increased impulses to brain equals less pain.
