Summary: Wonderful book, however...
Review: It's premised on the idea that if you are going to fast for more than 3 days, you obtain a trained physician to assist you in your fast. Good luck finding one. Most MDs won't support the necessary regimen or have the training to perform it. Frequently, one finds that chiropractors or naturopaths are main the ones offering this service. But even then, there are only a handful certified by IAHP (Hygeniec Physicians). That leaves the reader in a quandry. Do you I go it alone and risk complications or resign myself to 3 days or less without many of the benefits a longer fast has. To me, the only flaw of Dr. Fuhrman's book is that it leads the reader to the hope of fasting for health without the necessary support work of physicians or health professionals to provide this service. Flying to New Jersey to spend a month with Dr. Furhman isn't realistic for me or many I would imagine. Perhaps it would be better to empower the patient and train individuals in what to look for regarding their own health. Order their own blood tests, etc. I'm frustrated that there is a wonderful treatment potentially so close and yet so far. BTW, otherwise, his book is wonderful (which is why I gave it 5 stars). It's an excellent buy whether you can find a doctor or not.

Summary: The definitive word on fasting
Review: Many books on fasting have been written. But do you really understand how to use fasting to cure (for a lifetime even) serious disease, and how to do it safely, in moderation, in terms of a lifetime dietary strategy? This book takes the approach of clinical medicine, to help you like a doctor really should, and cure your condition. Impossible conditions, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes [even type I -- yes], obesity, and many other serious conditions.

The clinical approach, doing it safely, curing disease, and giving a lifetime strategy, along with the wonderful true-to-life stories of real people. This book is outstanding. Five years later, my life is permanently touched. I have never forgotten the message. I even joined an internet group, the "Calorie Restriction Society", which changed my life, to put me on the track for extra years of health and true life extension.

Summary: Safe and powerful method of healing
Review: One of the dangers of rejecting conventional medicine is that there are a bewildering number of alternative practices to explore. Save yourself a lot of time and money by reading Dr. Fuhrman's book early in your search. Fasting is one of the safest and most powerful methods of healing, and Dr. Fuhrman's book is a wonderful guide. Even if complete recovery doesn't follow a therapeutic fast, you will have taken a huge first step by strengthening your immune system. Then you may want to consult "It's All In Your Head" by Hal Huggins and "Beating Alzheimer's" by Tom Warren to continue your assault on harmful bodily toxins.

Summary: Wonderful Book
Review: Perhaps the most authoritative book on fasting written. It is comprehensive, detailed, and well documented. Therapeutic fasting is well presented as an alternative regimen to drug therapy. However, appropriate caveats are given about care of a physician for fasts lasting longer than 3 days. Also, recommendations about optimal diet to accompany the fast are presented. The author favors a low protein, low fat, high fiber vegetarian diet as a precursor to the fast. All in all, a solid book. I think that the book would have benefited from more detail on how a patient can recognize and distinguish healthful symptoms of fasting from harmful ones. Doctors hide the ball all too often (though Dr. Fuhrman is less guilty of this than most physicians)instead of empowering patient to diagnose and treat their own conditions.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Competent but lukewarm and uninspiring
Review: The author obviously has some experience healing through fasting - his own and his patients - but there isn't much to get really ENTHUSED about - which is something most folks need to consider attempting a fast. While it's somewhat reassuring to learn all the technical processes that occur from a medical standpoint, that alone doesn't inspire confidence enough. I found this book to be rather dry and uninvolving.

Summary: Pseudo-Science
Review: The basic problem with this book is that, like much of what passes for health knowledge, it is based on anecdotal evidence. Thus, because a particular therapy seemed to help, or even genuinely helped, one person, does not make it a valid scientific method. There is no doubt that eating more vegtetables and fruits is good for you. Fasting may have some good benefits. But the book is woefully lacking in any valid scientific proof. For instance, there is a claim that fasting helps reduce build-ups in coronary arteries. If this is true, it would be fairly easy to run a scientific study doing before and after scans of those arteries using the lastest, non-invasive procedures that are available. Beware of following advise merely because someone has a MD degree!

Summary: a well written fraud
Review: The front cover reads: Precise diet and fasting programs...well, that`s a fraud. The book does not have ANY program. It just motivates you to fast. Having been written by a madical doctor, I expected it to be somehow more scientific (some statistics, some FACTS like: out of 72 people whom we supervised from 1993 to 1995, 58 decreased their ureic acid an average of 35% after 10 days of fasting...). The whole book could be summarized in the following sentence: "Fasting greatly helps detoxification which in turn helps with diseases and aches caused by toxins in the body". I give it one star because at least it does a decent job on motivating further research on fasting; otherwise, it does not provide what it offers.

Summary: Your food is killing you ...
Review: The only sure-fire way to extend a person's life is by _underfeeding_. Why is this so ?? Could it be that foods are killing us ?? The answer is definitely YES, foods ARE killing us, in more than a dozen different ways, and the reasons are clearly and thoroughly explored in this book.

Dr. Fuhrman is a medical doctor, and a former olympic ice skater who overcame an injury that was almost fatal to his olympic career, via fasting. In this book, he explains some of the benefits you can gain from fasting, and he explains exactly why you should not engage in fasting for more than 3-4 days without going to a medical clinic.

This is not a book to help you plan a fast. This is a book that can help to motivate a fast and to motivate more healthy eating. This book has a few very critical pieces of information (e.g. never eat between zero and 1200 calories because above 1200 calories you have enough carbohydrates -> glocose for your brain, and at zero calories your brain converts to ketosis and has enough glucose, but between 0 and 1200 calories your brain and organs compete for cabohydrates and you can easily damage your internal organs.)

The book is so motivational that I think many people will try unsupervised fasting after reading this book. I think the doctor should admit that his book will be too successful, and he should give a few more tips about how to run a short unsupervised fast, or what entry criteria / monitoring could be used for a short and self-supervised fast. That's the only flaw in this book.

Summary: The most important health book of the 20th century
Review: This book accurately states the causes of the vast majority of modern disease, and the lifestyle that will reverse and prevent them. It is easy to read, although a "dense" book in terms of the information presented and the shock of learning something marvelous about which we knew little or nothing.

It is good science and well documented. It is written in layman's terms and has clear explanations of the body's functions and malfunctions. It correlates with everything I have learned over the past 40 years about health and nutrition. I bought 20 and am giving them to my family and friends.
