Summary: It really is life-changing.
Review: Rather than repeat many of the reviewers of this book, I simply want to add this book has the potential change one's life. I read that in one of the reviews before I bought this book, and I though that's rather silly, it's almost sad that a diet book can change someone's life.

Six months later, I now wholeheartedly agree. My girlfriend is now completely vegetarian and I eat meat only one or twice a week. Prior to this I would eat meat once or twice a day. If you told me six months ago that in half a year I would be for all intent and purpose be a vegetarian, I would have laughed and said that's impossible. I like to workout a lot, where will I get my protein from.

Well, I still workout a lot and I get most of my protein from soy products. I've managed to maintain my muscle and still loose 30 pounds, most of it coming off in the first couple months. My girlfriend has lost a similar amount.

It's worth mentioning that Dr. Fuhrman's diet is pretty strict, and it's a very dramatic change coming over from the typical American diet. He talks about making the commitment, and that's very important, but I think it's also important to be realistic and realize that it may take a while to fully adopt all of the eating habits he proposes. Even now, while others probably think all I eat is rabbit-food, I realize that we still not following his diet perfectly. We'll have buns with our black bean burgers, but just try to make sure they're not refined. And I'm not too concerned about it. The weight is staying off and we feel great.

So do yourself a favor and buy this book. While you're at it, buy your loved ones all a copy too, as I've recently started doing. If the thought of being a vegetarian scares you, don't let it. Dr. Fuhrman offers plenty of recipes with meat in them, so you'll have plenty to eat, and you might be surprised to see that it's possible to really go without meat in your diet. You'll also sleep better at night (and probably live longer) knowing that the stuff you're putting in your body is a lot better than all of your friends who are on Atkins or the South Beach diet.

Summary: People are emotionally tied to food
Review: Dr. Fuhrman states that he doesn't think most of America will see the light and change their diet.
I work with a guy who is overweight and drinks Coke all day and eats really nothing but animal based foods full of fat. He went to the doctor and found his cholesterol to be 320. He is 34!!! The Doctor never once mentioned a thing about his diet just put him on crestor which of course now is considered a dangerous drug. If his Doctor had decided to enter the treacherous waters and suggest some changes in his diet he probably would have been met with anger and disgust.
The American love affair with food is killing them and no one wants to hear that they are the reason for their diseases. I do believe there is hope in getting some of America to leave the animals and their products out of the picture and stick to vegetables and fruit that were put here for a reason.

Summary: everyone should read this book!!
Review: I am 23 years old, and since graduating from college and taking a desk job, I have been feeling sluggish and put on about 10 pounds. I just started the eat to live plan recently, and already my clothes feel looser and I have a lot more energy to work out, do things around the house, play with my dog, etc. The plan is not just about weight loss and energy, though, by any means: it is about disease reversal and prevention!! Most Americans I know over the age of 40 suffer or have suffered from high cholesterol, blood pressure, heart problems, cancers.... you get the idea. Dr. Fuhrman shows you that armed with the proper knowledge and the produce section at the supermarket, these diseases are preventable! Also, I never feel deprived or hungry, and I love coming up with inventive ways to cook veggies, beans, grains, etc... Everyone should read this book, even if they decide the plan is not for them, the nutritional knowledge is worth it!

Summary: The best book on health, and incidentally on weight loss
Review: The commercial blurb on this book represents it as a weight loss book, but that's only because overweight is one of the most widespread symptoms of overall ill health in America today. Restoring health through a proper diet automatically results in fat loss, both through improved body function and the fact that a good diet doesn't contain foods that inevitably pack weight on you.

This is a book based on years of research and medical practice by a physician who has had enormous success in restoring health to diabetics, heart patients, and other people with the usual chronic diseases that our American eating habits are setting us up for.

People who write reviews objecting to the book because you have to eat a lot of vegetables are only objecting to the fact that they have human bodies instead of cat ones. Cats would probably do fairly well on the Atkins diet. This book is the most optimum human diet that Fuhrman was able to design, based on research and results, not opinion or some vegetarian agenda. The China Project by T. Colin Campbell has shown conclusively that humans are healthiest on a plant-based diet and that the more meat they eat, the worse off they are. It's just a biological fact.

Nobody says you have to eat an optimum diet, but if you want to know what it is, read this book. The results of following it can be felt very quickly - in my case, after one day I felt noticeably better, and continued to improve thereafter. How hard the transition is depends on what you were eating previously, and your state of health. But if you follow it for six weeks, as Fuhrman recommends, your skin, energy, and weight will all show the results. And if you continue to follow this diet, you'll have a lot less to worry about as you get older.

Summary: An "Eat To Live" Personal Triumph
Review: Dear Dr. Fuhrman,

I wrote to you last month inquiring about your LDL Protect supplement. I mentioned that in the early part of 2004, I was briefly on Lipitor which caused me to break out in yeast infections so I stopped taking it after two months. On my previous "American" diet my cholesterol was at a very undesirable 275. I also wanted to lose weight. I knew there had to be a better way.

And, thank God, I found it in your books, which a friend told me about.

I started the "Eat To Live" diet in the beginning of November, 2004. I just got my new blood work back. Through diet alone, my cholesterol dropped to 214;
Trigylcerides - 137
HDL - 65
LDL - 122

I did purchase your LDL Protect last month, but I wanted to see what the blood results were from the diet alone before I took the supplements (which I just started today). I do have further to go, but between the LDL Protect and continuing on the diet, I believe that I will continue to see my cholesterol levels decline.

I want to thank you so very much for being a beacon shining through the dark abyss of the
traditional medical establishment.

If I hadn't found out about "Eat To Live" - and the awareness that comes along with it - I would be another increasingly rotund, animal fat-laden American, chugging down Lipitor, Prilosec (I used to have chronic heartburn and acid reflux) antihistamines (for my allergies) and who knows what else as the years roll by, slowly becoming resigned to the fact that this is how the body ages.

Now I know better. Thanks to your books and invaluable information.

I easily dropped 22 pounds and continue to lose weight. I ran into a friend on the street who I hadn't seen in four months. He didn't even recognize me at first, because of the weight loss. I am no longer bloated because I have virtually cut salt out of my diet. I weaned myself off Prilosec a month ago (I was on it for years) and have no heartburn. I don't need antihistamines anymore.
I used to get debilitating migraine headaches every few weeks. Since being on "Eat To Live," I not only haven't had one migraine, I haven't had any headaches period.

I continue to be amazed at how radically changing my diet is radically changing my life.
It's wonderful.

Yours truly,
Paul

Summary: The Best Nutrition Book
Review: The is the best nutrtion book I have read and I will use it, teach from it and recommend it! Read this book if you are ready to get healthy and slim!

Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach.
I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www. S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.

Summary: This book has made me very angry
Review: But not at Dr. Fuhrman. I'm angry because, after years of working out and eating whole grains and giving up on red meat -- yet still staying overweight -- I've discovered the doctor's very simple secret about eating to live. NUTRIENT DENSITY!! It's quite amazing, and I've already dropped 17 pounds that I'll never see again.

Every day I go through a quart-sized bag of raw vegetables, along with an ounce of raw nuts so their fat can help me absorb the nutrients from the veggies, four servings of fruit, a couple of cans of beans (one with two tablespoons of ground flax seed), and a bowl of whole grain cereal with soy milk. I'm not only losing weight, but my skin's looking better and a long-standing shoulder and hip problem has cleared up. I'm also not suffering one bit despite the fact that I eat under 1900 calories a day. Once I reach my target weight I'm actually going to be jacking that up another 300 to 2200, and I'll start eating a little meat again. But even then I won't be having more than a couple of servings a week. I've never seen a strict vegetarian that looked that strong and healthy.

(Though I'd be happy to be wrong!!)

Use this book if you want to live.

Summary: If it weren't such a hassle, I'd ask for a refund...
Review: This book is selling a vegetarian lifestyle, period. Your goal is to eat a pound of raw vegetables a day, and dairy & animal products are listed in the "off limits" category, despite what other reviewers have said. I'm totally disgusted that I wasted money on this book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: If you want to know what the studies say...
Review: This book changed my life! Joel Fuhrman reviewed more than 2000 scientific studies about diet and health and he summarizes them in this book. There IS an overall message, and it is not one you can get from reading the newspaper. This book gave us the incentive to change our diet and our tastebuds have changed to enjoy truly HEALTHY eating. A year ago, I was a sugar and chocolate addict. Now I can pass those things up easily and ENJOY what I am eating instead. Chronic health issues have cleared up gradually. I am so excited about this book that I have purchased 5 copies for friends with health problems (We should NOT have all these health problems in our 40s!)and will purchase 5 more copies to distribute at a meeting where I will give a book review of Eat to Live. I think this book needs to be a textbook for high school health classes. America MUST change the way it eats! The people perish for lack of knowledge.
