Rating: Summary: But FAM isn't natural...... Review: Beware the overwhelming praise of this book as being "natural" family planning. Welcher states in her book that FAM is the natural method for the health conscious, but immediately in the next section makes a distinction between users of FAM and Natural Family Planning (NFP). The difference being that NFP users abstain during fertile periods and FAM users engage barrier methods. Sorry Toni but there is nothing natural about a latex condom loaded with chemical spermicides, sponges, cervical caps, or any barrier method.Hurray for you for curing the overwhelming ignorance of women about charting their fertility - but several other books do that as well. Boo on you for claiming to be natural and purporting a host of radical feminist propaganda - as if doctors actually consciously chose medical terms to offend women! Take a class in Latin, Toni!! Title of the book is misleading too - if this were natural - you wouldn't be taking charge of it - no one controls nature. Rather it is a matter of working with it. If you are looking for a guide on NATURAL family planning - try Kippley or another author. To really get into the science of nutrition and fertility - read Marilyn Shannon.
Rating: Summary: Why didn't I learn this in school?! Review: This book is a major contribution to the field of woman's health studies. I thought I knew my body and how it worked, but until I read Taking Charge, I was in fact pretty ignorant. There are so many "Oh wow, that's what that is" moments that most women will be able to relate to. I have been charting for a few months now without any problem, and even though I'm now using it for birth control, I'm lookijng forward to being able to turn the information around so that I can get pregnant as quickly as possible. This book is easy to read and INCREDIBLY informative.
Rating: Summary: Very Good, But Only Up to A Point :( Review: EDIT: In my original review I gave this book 3 stars for reasons outlined below. However, the newest edition addresses these issues and I can now give it 5 stars without reservation. Great book!! This book is a very good explanation of the normal female menstrual cycle. I would give it 5 stars except for a bit of very bad advice she gives. Ms. Weschler asserts that long and/or irregular periods are nothing to be concerned about, some women just don't ovulate every month. Indeed, an occasional weird cycle is nothing to be alarmed about. But, when your cycles are often long and/or irregular or anovulatory, there is reason to be concerned. In reality, irregular cycles can be symptomatic of a whole slew of infertility problems including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Premature Ovarian Failure, thyroid disorder, etc. If you are actively trying to conceive, each of these problems can make conception very difficult, if not impossible. I wasted a year charting my very irregular cycles, convinced that they were "no big deal", before I discovered that I should have gone to a specialist right away. :( Hopefully, future editions will include at least a brief discussion on why some women get irregular periods and when to consult a specialist.
Rating: Summary: A reader in Wisconsin Review: This is a great book for anyone just starting the journey of trying to become pregnant. It's very informative and really makes you feel in control of the situation. The information is definitely not something you ever would hear from your doctor. I don't agree that getting pregnant is as "easy" as they claim it is. Everyone is so different and I didn't find the instructions to be a breeze like the writer made it sound. Because it's been over a year for me without any pregnancy, I also just found myself getting frustrated because the writer didn't provide enough information about what to do if natural family planning isn't successful. The book does touch on fertility testing and other infertility options, but it didn't give me enough information to feel comfortable and confident with my situation. If you are someone just starting the giant rollercoaster though, it is an informative book.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book Review: I bought this book after my wife and I had been trying to conceive a child for about 5 months. After reading the book we felt that for the first time, we fully understood how fertility and conception really work and how to maximise the chances of pregnancy. The silly thing is that it's not that complicated. Doctors and teachers just don't explain it. The results speak for themselves, my wife fell pregnant the month after we read the book. I can't recommend this book enough if your trying to conceive a child.
Rating: Summary: REQUIRED READING Review: We got pregnant immediately after following the guidelines in this book. You really will take control of your own fertility. This book should be in all gyn/ob-gyn waiting rooms.
Rating: Summary: A must have for all women Review: This book is fabulous. I told my OB/GYN that she needs to recommend it to ALL women, not just those trying to conceive. As a nurse, I thought that I knew a lot about women's bodies, but there is information in this book that we were never taught. A great book!
Rating: Summary: A must have book for ALL women Review: I wish this book was given to all young women, required reading in medical schools and a textbook in every women's health class. Once you read it, you'll co what I did and buy five more copies for family and friends.
Rating: Summary: Every woman should have this book! Review: A friend introduced me to this book, and I have passed it on to any woman who would read it! after reading this book I had a better understanding of my body than my family doctor! My husband also read it, and now he's jealous. He wishes someone wrote a similar book about men! It is a great method to achieve pregnancy, but more importantly, it helps women understand the craziness of their hormones, cycles, and reproductive system. I will use this to teach all of my daughters about their bodies--long before pregnancy is an issue.
Rating: Summary: The "bible" for trying to conceive Review: This book is a must-own for every couple who is trying to conceive! I did not have a clue what was going on with my body prior to reading this. Now, my husband and I are able to time our efforts in attempt to get pregnant in an educated manner. This book should be on the shelves of every gynecologist in the country. It would even be very useful in avoiding pregnancy naturally.
