Rating: Summary: Overhyped, overmarketed, overrated Review: Roger Dawson's 13 Secrets of Power Performance, Steven Scott's Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams and Marshall Sylver's Passion Profit & Power are each 10 million times better than this book.
Rating: Summary: If you don't have it, get it Review: For those who have said that Covey simply used old ideas, I say, "Yes, didn't you read the introduction?" Unlike all the other arrogant self-help and business authors out there, Covey humbly admits AT THE VERY BEGINNING that his work is based upon research of 200 years of work. What Covey has done, and very succesfully, is put all of this learning into a very practical, easy-to-understand, and insightful package. For those who say that it is simply common sense, I would say that everything that is worthwhile is common sense. It just takes someone who has clear thinking to help point out the common sense right in front of our nose.
Rating: Summary: If you're ready for personal change... Review: First of all, people who have responded negatively to "The 7 Habits" may simply not be ready to incorporate and internalize Covey's principles into their lives yet. They may also have been expecting an easy read, a "quick fix" if you will, and been sadly disappointed. For people who are ready, this book will seem like a beacon of light, giving implementable and easy to follow methods to take control of your life, feel fulfilled personally, be able to give to your loved ones and richen your every relationship. It just makes sense! I found the latter part of the book very powerful in that Covey hits on a key aspect to healthy, happy and effective living: BALANCE. "The 7 Habits" is a guide and reference manual providing you with the tools to take control of your life. It's up to the individual as to where to take that in his/her own life.
Rating: Summary: This book has changed my life Review: I am somewhat cynical about self-help books but this book really has made a change in my life. In response to previous negative comments: 1. I am extremely sensative to books that get religious and I was not bothered once with this one - I am not religious at all. The only reference to religion may be to wise sayings that apply to becomming successful. 2. The book has been called simplistic - the concepts are simple but profound. If we could only follow the simple ideas this world would be an amazing and happy place. The simple concepts are sometimes the most important. 3. Covey does use old ideas in his book but he presents them in a new way that is easy to understand. I was disappointed when I read books much older than 7-habbits that had the same basic ideas. What they lacked was an understandable way to implement change and a good and enthusiastic idea-weaver like Covey. 4. Comments attacking Covey's personal character have been made but I have not read anything that substantiates them. From the little that I know about him, he is a good and very successful person. Success is not measured by wealth and companies that you own - it is measured by what kind of a person you are. This book has changed me by making me think about the important things in my life. It also made me realize that I was hurting myself by doing things that were against what I believed to be right. This book holds the ideas to help me gain wisdom and success in my life. It is certainly my favorite book.
Rating: Summary: Effectiveness is your desire to improve your ... you choose Review: GET THE BOOK and learn!!!! Having read the book, listened to the tapes and attend the 3 day workshop I offer the experience of starting with suspicion and finding I was incorrect. Get the book and read it completely before you make a judgement. Do the exercises Covey suggests and then review the material. If you want effectiveness you have to work at it. Go for it.
Rating: Summary: double wow! Review: I'm only on page 84, but I've stopped for now. Too much food for thought! I found it difficult to read at first, but now it's difficult to put it down. My only question: how does a simple person like me progress to the stage where I will be known and recognised as one of those 'highly effective people'? Just wondering...
Rating: Summary: whatever Review: I thought this book would help me focus; i discovered page after page of buzzwords that ineffectual colleagues have been throwing around for years. The stuff that is good is tarted-up common sense, nothing more; the rest is filler and/or boring exercises. I found the book to be written in a very patronizing fashion in addition to being downright dull.
Rating: Summary: For all the disappointed souls !! Review: After reading this book and then the reviews, I have summarized all your disappointments. The gripe I keep hearing is that "Covey's" book is so basic !! Undoubtedly it is pretty obvious, but that is exactly what he was trying to do, point out the obvious!! Many of us seem to look for a "quick fix" but if your life was that simple you wouldn't need a book!! One thing Covey stresses throughout the book is that, There is no "quick fix" to life, just common principles that bind some of the most successful people together. That is what separates the haves and the have nots!!
Rating: Summary: Your mother couldn't tell you this... Review: ...because you wouldn't listen to her. This book made me see it myself. And I have never felt so exited in my life before, because I feel for the first time, that I can lay behind me my selfcenteredness. This book is so extremely perfect for christian people, who wants to really follow the Holy Bibles teaching. I read it in that perspective. Please read this book. You can't possibly regret it! ... ;-) - and God bless you...
Rating: Summary: Private Victory is Good. Review: The book is divided into two major sections. Private Victory and Public Victory. I have read the Private Victory section so far, and I believe that Stephen Covey is great at managing his personal life to get personal fulfillment. His lessons have changed my life. His words near the end of the chapter about delegation, however, seemed to lack the scientific analysis that other management specialists have decried. So far, it's a 5 stars. If the next section is as good as the first, well, I'd give it 10 stars. But I'm looking forward with caution.
