Rating: Summary: More Party Games with DSM IV Review: Although DSM-IV is the bible of psychiatric diagnosis it's validity as a party game should not be overlooked. With a group of people gathered round you can almost certainly categorise any one of them with numerous mental disorders that should technically have them locked away for years. It is not a good idea to include religious people in the game, they always seem to get the best matches to the really good disorders!Psychiatrists will have you believe that some skill is required to use DSM, most laypeople with a brain, however will start to realise that the validity of this book can be somewhat questionable and really is best used as a party game.
Rating: Summary: Down the Rabbit Hole Review: An invaluable tool in understanding the downward spiral of a loved one. Made the investigation of past years much easier to understand It was purchased in self-defense..too many assessments, test results, etc. over a year-long period and no common thread except the DSM-IV. Not being anyone associated with the world of health professionals, I purchased this reference guide to help me try and follow their logic(?? from point A to point B to Point C............ad infinitum
Rating: Summary: A monumental effort with less than monumental results Review: Any criticism of the "DSM-IV-TR" is really a criticism of psychiatry in general. The "DSM-IV-TR" represents a massive undertaking by a massive number of people, which is perhaps the reason that the results are somewhat generic and nebulous. Where's the neuroscience? Nowhere. That's my main criticism. Until psychiatry begins to truly dissect the biochemical aspects of mental illness, all there'll be is a caricature of what is truly awry in mental illness, and hence the "DSM-IV-TR". Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Rating: Summary: If you've got the '94 edition, you're fine... Review: As a mental health clinician, I made the mistake of buying this the Text Revision of the DSM-IV on the assumption that there were some extensive changes. Don't bother. If you have the 1994 version, you're fine. This 2000 update doesn't change all that much, unless you are very, very, very picky. I'd wait around for DSM-V. (Heck, I know folks who are still swearing my DSM-III). The cost of this book for a few minor changes simply isn't justified.
Rating: Summary: The Clinical Side Review: Danicia Whittington, 2nd year college,
Working my way through my Psychiatric studies in hopes of one day working in the field. I bought this book, thinking that it would help me to understand, it does-at least the clinical side of the illnesses. But, it lacks the understanding of the 'Physical' and 'mental'- why for's? Over all it is a good book to help with the understanding of as I stated before, and should be read by those going in to or apart of the Mental Health community-but I also recommend that if you purchase this book you also purchase books that show how some people have mental illnesses in the first place.
Recommendations for the humanistic side: Nightmares Echo,Sickened,Bastard Out Of Carolina,Running With Scissors
Rating: Summary: Consider etiology and treatment too. Review: DSM-IV-TR provides diagnostic information about mental illnesses, but as a physician, I find that information about etiology and treatment is important. Michael B. First and Allan Tasman wrote "DSM-IV-TR Mental Disorders" to include all three of these areas. It was published in 2004 and costs about $225. If you can afford it, you might want to consider purchasing it.

Rating: Summary: I disagree about laypeople reading it... Review: I am a psychologist and I have been practicing for about 30 years. I remember the little DSM II. It was the size of the companion small book that can be purchased. The DSM has a history. There was actually a time when psychologists and psychiatrists were considering 2 different texts. Reading the reviewers was interesting as this is my tool to differentiate what my clients present. It is continually being improved and that is the focus of TR. There are subtle differences and clarifications. This book is the basis of identifying the specifics of what we are working with. The DSM IV was a collaborative effort to acurately represent international, cultural, and biological differences. My clients don't care but some don't know that an adjustment disorder of mood is different than dysthymia or depression which is again different from Bi Polar disorder. I probably wouldn't read it if I didn't do this kind of work. Yet it may be important to people with diagnosed illness. It can assist the capable reader in being an informed consumer.
