Rating: Summary: The best book of my childhood! Review: I recived this book when I was about eight, and I'm not sure why I've never been arrested. This book will make even the most bitter person smile wide and true. Uncle Shelby's wicked humor cuts like a dull razor at the ups and downs of being a child, or raising one.
Rating: Summary: Indispensible, if you have a warped sense of humor. Review: I discovered Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book back in 1990, and my own writing style hasn't been the same since. I've found it to be a fairly effective litmus test for determining whether somebody has a twisted sense of humor or not: those who do, love the book; those who don't, don't get it. Personally, I find it to be completely hilarious; a masterpiece, even.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! I couldn't stop laughing! Review: It's hard to find good, clean humor like that anymore. Shel Silverstein is one of my favorite poets. He knows when to be funny and he knows when to be sincere. I already have 'Falling Up','Where The Sidewalk Ends', and 'A Light In The Attic'. I will probably be reading his work to my children as well, just as my mother read it to me.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Off-Beat Humor Review: There is no question that this is one of the greatest comedy pieces of the century. The only question that remains is wether or not it's for children. C'mon... give kids some credit! If your children have been raised to use their brains, to think freely, and to love humor, this book can't do anything but contribute to their development into well-rounded, rational adults. I will continue to read "Uncle Shelby" till the day I die (laughing all the way!)
Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Review: I admit, I had high hopes for this book when I first heard about it, but the moment it was truly mine and I could sit in my room and read it in solitude, I knew I'd found the perfect manifestation of my particular sense of humor. To say it is skewed is the understatement of the century. But is it for children? Well personally, I would throw caution to the wind and say hell yes! Humor is a far more effective educational tool than almost anything else. It's hard to believe that the ABZ book will be 38 years old this year; it's just as fresh as when it first appeared on the scene.
Rating: Summary: A,B,Z's for the demented! Review: Shel Silverstein is the true master of humor for children. Our library mistakenly put this in the children's department until the uproar! My son read this at age 7 and laughed and laughed- maybe that's why he became both the class clown and a merit scholar! We need to laugh at ourselves and uncle shelvy sure knows the trick- especially with J - joke- once upon a time there was a travelling salesman.....
Rating: Summary: Do not read unless you are ready to be amused! Review: One of the greatest children's books ever written for adults. I have given many as gifts and I am ordering more for Christmas. It's a real classic for anyone who believes that the world is usually best viewed upside down, backwards, and with a shot of cynicism.
Rating: Summary: Extremely funny parody of children's books. Review: A book supposedly written for kids (though you should not let them near as it will put terrible ideas in the heads). In the form of a "learn your alphabet" book, Silverstein gleefullly unleashes all kinds of misinformation. My personal favorites include the letters 'P' and 'T'. Sesame Street was never like this.
Rating: Summary: Essential education for every child Review: The funniest children's book I've read since "Dr Fegg's Encylopedia of All World Knowledge" by Terry Jones and Michael Palin. One of the most important things children should be learning these days is how to think for themselves and not blindly trust everyone. A little cynical humor is just the thing to teach them that important lesson gently.
Rating: Summary: Even at 6 yrs old, I knew how to take Uncle Shelby's jokes. Review: I remember my mother hated that her friend gave me this book at 6 yrs old, but even then I knew how to laugh and what to believe. If you are concerned that a child will act on the suggestions or ideas in this book, you need to be concerned about the rearing of the child, not the jokes in the book.
