Review: I am just finishing up on this book, and after two solid days I have gone from no experience with avid to very comfortable. I don't know how well a new editor would do with this book, but if you already know FCP or Premiere this seems like an excellent way to learn all of the key concepts you need to run an editing app.
This is the best instructional manual I have come across.

Summary: Great Nesting and Tips chapters
Review: It's hard to believe the author covers so much material in this book but because of all the great examples and screen shots, the topics he covers are very detailed. The chapters on nesting and power tips are worth the read alone if you're new to avid or have been using it for a while. My only fault with this book is that all the screen shots are in black and white. A lot of tools and tracks depend on color in the Avid Xpress Pro.
