Rating: Summary: A "how-to" book on how to create great maps with ArcView. Review: "Without geography, you're nowhere!" Jimmy BuffetArcView 3.2 GIS software from the Environmental Systems Research Institute allows you to make maps from complicated geographic data faster than ever before. Unfortunately, if you don't know the basics of cartography, you can make bad, inaccurate, and misleading maps just as fast! Cartographic Design Using ArcView GIS covers the essentials of the science and art of cartography and how you can use them in ArcView to make attractive and accurate maps for presentations, publications and the Web. This well illustrated book is crammed with practical tips and techniques to speed up the map making process in ArcView and add eye-catching effects to your map products, whether they are on paper or in digital form. The book starts by presenting basic cartographic principles, and then applying them in the map production process with the tools available in ArcView. Then, the book goes on to describe dozens of ArcView extensions, available for free or low cost on the Internet, that will greatly aid cartographers in map construction and visualization. Included with the book is a sixteen-page full color insert showing ArcView color schemes, color palettes, and maps, with notes on how to create great cartographic effects. Cartographic Design Using ArcView GIS opens a world of mapmaking for those new to ArcView, as well as providing advanced techniques for the experienced digital cartographer. Rating: Summary: Take your mapping to the next level! Review: Clear and concise! Step by step details on how to make your maps more powerful and readable. I especially liked the lists of additional resources throughout the book, particularly how to design your maps for your web site.

Rating: Summary: Very unhappy Review: If you try to download the files in the book the link is not active I contacted the Mr. Madej and the book publisher and nether one gave me a response. If you are going to spend that much money for a book it would be nice to get what you payed for.
Rating: Summary: Very useful for all but the very advanced Review: This book is good for the beginner/intermediate Arcview user who wants to brush up on the finer details of map production and design. I like the attitude of the authors in that they are willing to point out the deficiencies of the Arcview software while at the same time suggesting a wide variety of 3rd party extensions to make it more useful. The writing style is lucid and not overly technical and I could imagine myself performing the functions they describe without having to go to my computer. What I would like to see however - especially for the ...asking price - is a full color text as this is the only way to communicate much of what the author is trying to convey. Still this is the only book I know of that deals specifically with ESRI software for the purpose of cartographic design and my wish is that they produce another volume for the new ArcGIS software.
Rating: Summary: Very useful book Review: This book is very useful for someone looking to enhance their arc maps beyond the standard design.
Rating: Summary: NOT for the advanced Review: This is a very complete guide to using ArcView to create maps. It is far more detailed than ESRI's guide that ships with the product. However, if you are an advanced user (Such as myself, I've been using AV for 6 years.) you will probably not find much new material.
