Summary: STEAL THIS BOOK!!
Review: I have the 1st edition of The Cabling Handbook, but the 2nd ed is completely updated and is even one inch thicker with even more terrific information. Keep this one on your reference shelf since it covers A-Z of all aspects of cabling for telecommunications and computer networking. Greatly expanded coverage of DSL and fiber technology. Once again, there's a well balanced content of theory and practice. My favorite sections are those which take the reader through design issues and considerations. My brother in-law installs telecom line-- he's definitely getting this book for his birthday.

Summary: The second edition is even better than the first!!
Review: I just received my copy of the second edition of the Cabling Handbook by John Vacca. I am recommending this book to all of my clients at Computer Economics and all or my friends and associates in the field.

The expanded edition covers ne territory and new technology.

I am very pleased that the publisher decided to update the book and highly recommend it.

Summary: A very practical and thorough guide to cabling.
Review: I was very impressed with the clarity of the author's writing and attention to detail. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has to deal with and/or manage any type of cable systems.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Comprehensive, practical, informative, and READABLE!
Review: I wish I had had this book during the many diverse network specifications and configurations I was involved in. All the research I had to do (and more) has been done here by Mr.Vacca. The information is assimilated in an organised structure, and, best of all, is expressed in readable and unpretentious English.

Standards are fully described. Rules and advice are provided in clear DO and DON'T format. Practical considerations and constraints are detailed. The appendices alone are a valuable reference, but the body of the book is incredibly informative, and is truly a hands-on resource.

My only problem with this book is its title: it is far more than a "Cabling" handbook. It covers most practical aspects of networking and communications. We are applying some of the information in here as we analyse the feasibility of satellite in our wireless MAN implementation, with not a cable in sight!

I would suggest that, for anyone involved in the technical aspects of networking, this could be your primary reference resource.

Summary: A good review reference to Telecom other than cabling.
Review: If you are a new comer to the telecommunications and want to read on an overview go ahead you are in the right place. There isn't much information here about cabling, nothing ordinary. For cabling information you may want to check out James Trulove's LAN Wiring.

Summary: This book teaches "Nothing" about cable installation !
Review: If your interest is cable installation "HOW TO",this book is of no practical use to a cable installer. After reading it,you will not understand how to connect a plug to a cable;how to pull cable correctly;how to wire an telecom outlet;how the various wiring schemes work and how the colour code is used for identificaion in these schemes;or how to use a cable map tester to test for faults. These are some of the basic skills for any installation. If you want to to learn about cable installation,i recommmend the following books (1)the Building Industry Consulting Services International(BICSI)-Cable installation Manual,(2)Cabling :the complete guide to network wiring,(3)Communications Cabling.

Summary: Another good book on Contemporary issues.
Review: John has again picked another area of technology which is fast becoming the 'talk of the town'. Cable will allow the capacity that most phone lines cannot provide and will be the main way for people to get connected. Another good read - keep it up John.

Summary: another one and only reference book on cabling
Review: John Vacca did it again. The Cabling Handbook has gone straight into our reference library with all the others he has written. Building Virtual Reality systems as we do doesn't only have to do with building imaginary worlds ( unfortunately), we must deal with the hardware and John Vacca has written just what we need. How does it do it !!!

Summary: The Cabling Handbook-Second Edition
Review: John Vacca has written the definitive work on computer network cabling. This text is a must read for IT managers considering upgrading their current LANS or WANS because it discusses in detail each choice that has to be made when upgrading a network. In addition, once the upgraded system choices have been made this book contains all the technical information needed for installation of the new system including trouble shooting of problems as well as needed maintenance.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Outstanding and relevant review of cabling technologies.
Review: Mr. John Vacca has provided an extremely well organized review of network cabling installation, cabling investment strategies and the most current standards (domestic and international). The handbook provides a detailed procedural approach to network planning, design and implementation of high performance cabling systems. The reference shows you how to install a network cabling system to include testing procedures and how to obtain system performance cetification. The text's nine appendices provide superb cabling references such as fiber channel products, top cable installation companies, cabling products (with direct links to each companies website), leading cable labeling companies, SCSI companies, and a cabling directory to name a few. The final three chapters of the book provide an insightful look at the future of wireless communications by examining both the cabling industry and home networking. An invaluable reference.
