Rating: Summary: At least it's 30% off the cover price Review: Granted Dell is one of the greatest success stories in computing history, however, chapter after chapter the same things were repeated over and over. After the first couple of chapters you can put the book down - there's nothing notable from then on.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed the audiotape which is in Michael Dell's own voice Review: Dell has been a pioneer in accelerating the velocity of inventory throughout the supply chain. Listening to Michael Dell tell the story is well worth the time.
Rating: Summary: BORING at the very best Review: I really was expecting an Andy Grove's "only the paranoid survive" and was dissappointed that it was so dry and internal looking , with all the PR fluff and lack of personal perspective. Too narrative ...not enough focus on the external environment, what the market was doing at all those moments, how competitors tried to react, all the decisions and factors considered at various inflection points etc...Just a bunch of PR. Personally its a shame since its THE greatest success story ever, yet it lacks any juice for the million Dell fans. If the entire company functions like this with strong internal focus and execution I doubt this army of parochial worker ants , as successful as they have been, will be able to survive the impending sea of change he talks of in his book.
Rating: Summary: Revisionist Dell: Clear but sanitized 'Pop-History' Review: Easy to read - but little detail. Nobody builds a business like his without major frights and fights along the way. Dell stresses the direct model & service level. Sadly, my own recent experience fell short of the high standards set. Their website and business model are excellent. The hand of the revisionist & maybe the ghost-writer are evident.
Rating: Summary: Very informative, but lacking critical details Review: The book is worth buying. Dell gives good insight into the thought processes that drive his company's success. However, it does fall short in explaining execution. How, for example, they were able to convince their procurement department to share information with suppliers, how prices were negotiated, how they were able to build a distribution system that facilitated their business model, etc, etc. An underlying theme in the book was focus/execution, but it ended there - which was dissappointing.
Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone in business (or who wants to be) Review: Michael Dell has written an easy to read yet complex book on one of the most incredible business and personal success stories in the 20th Century! For the people who say that Michael should have given more information, do you really think that Mike D can or would put all of that in a $24.95 hardback? And do your really think that the average reader could absorb it? Michael gets down to the basics and I like the way he talks about understanding people. A lot of would be entrepeneurs think to succeed in business, you have to know everything about the business. Who makes a business successful? It's people of course! If you're in business or want to be or in a management position, read Michael Dell's book. You won't get a Harvard education from it but you may just learn how to create and build a very successful business.
Rating: Summary: A great history of the PC! Review: I actually enjoyed reading this book. It is a great history about the PC. It is entertaining written, and describes the story about a company, that did things different. This book is about reading the market, understanding the weaknesses of the market, and than comimg up with the right idea at the right time. If you want to read this book, because it is a book about the "Strategies That Revolutionized an Industry", well - I hope you like books about business history. But being that it is really good.
Rating: Summary: Concise. Informative. I recommend this book highly. Review: A down-to-earth no nonsense book of how Michael Dell took his company from the dorm room to the Board Room. I enjoyed the book immensely. A fast read. Great information.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational, Insightful, Classic Dell. Review: When his parents discovered him hiding computers behind his shower curtains, Dell bravely told them his life's goal was to defeat IBM. And he did! Today, Dell's story inspires people all over the world. His simple yet effective business concepts of customer orientation, direct marketing, and inventory management are the cornerstone of modern business. Read it before it's too late.
Rating: Summary: Refresh your way of thinking Review: The book is excellence in a way walking you throught the path of DELL's success. If you are in the PC industries, you know how good it is and you must be able to get what you wanted to know. If you are not in the PC industries, you should be able to realize that around you more opportunities are coming along as the information technology has been changing the way of doing business.
