Rating: Summary: a treasure trove of information for business leaders Review: This is a terrific book for anyone who aspires to run or lead a business. Dell writes entertainingly about his childhood adventures -- not many teenagers were enterprising enough to research how to find all newly married couples and all people who took out mortgages in order to sell newspaper subscriptions! He was making an annual salary higher than most of his teachers just from his summer activities. His parents should have known they were in for trouble. The first part of the book is devoted to how he founded his business with $1000 of start up money and then all the ups, downs, and mistakes they made along the way. It is encouraging to read that it's not the mistakes that matter, but how quickly you acknowledge and address them that count. The second part of the book has tremendously practical advice for almost any company. Why make the same mistakes that you could avoid by following his model for success? I daresay there is enough solid information here for any informed person to put into practice what Dell did to make a successful business. After having read a series of books on leadership, I can say that this is one of the most practical and hands-on ones as well as one of the most interesting.
Rating: Summary: e-Supply Chain...what to take away from the Dell book Review: Dell has become the model for Internet-based business (together with Cisco). Lesson #1- everyone in the company has to strive towards Return on Invested Capital. That means negative working capital, and inventory of around 6 days at Dell. You've heard about the other lessons- go direct, customer focus, customer segmentation etc. The book gives the reader a case study which shows that all of these work in practice.
Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone in business Review: Mike Dell has written an easy to read but complex book. If you are in business or want to be, get this book. It's great. I also like the tapes and play them in my car.
Rating: Summary: Sensational Book-A must read Review: When I first heard about this book, I was filled with ambiquity. I felt that this book would just be a "slap me on the back, I'm Mike Dell and I'm the greatest" sort of thing. Now I realize that those initial feelings were way off. Mike Dell has written a excellent book here, well worth a investment of your time to read.Great book.
Rating: Summary: Historical narrative of the growth of Dell Review: This book is essentially a superficial narrative of the rise of Dell computer from its start at the room of Michael Dell at University to its growth into the direct sales computer company. There are no real insights into the success of the company. Obviously, the direct sales approach has been very successful for the company and the book includes a valuable fold-out diagram which illustrates the way the direct sales approach works. It is even more interesting to actually order a computer from Dell and use the online tracking web-site to further see the actual stages (which are illustrated in the diagram) in actual operation. To get actual hands-on use of the Dell direct approach , after reading this book, gives a person a better idea of how the Dell system works. The crucial features of the system are firstly the logistics and secondly the build to order approach. Often the build to order system will create the computer of choice within a matter of hours/days where as the logistics takes the most amount of time. For example for the Dell I ordered it took around 10 working days for shipping from the factory to me. However, for someone with no previous knowledge of Dell or its direct sales approach and the way it operates, who needs a beginners guide then the paperback edition gives you an excellent introduction into the direct way of dealing with customers and the principle of mass-customisation at work through the web.
Rating: Summary: Direct from the Horses Mouth! Review: If you want to learn anything, learn from those who are the best at what they do. When it comes to business success, who better to learn from than Michael Dell, the man who broke all the records in business.I am partial to the tapes which are in Mike Dell's own words and shows the time and detail he put into this material.I also own the book and refer back to it often.
Rating: Summary: Dell's strategies are revolutionary! Review: To revolutionize a industry once is incredible. To do it twice is mindboggling. But to do it under the age of 30 is totally beyond comprehension. But wait, the best from Dell is yet to come.Like many of the other readers I found this book to be a easy read but still highly informative. If you are in business, you will find the strategies refreshing and powerful.Great book. Read it, but even more importantly, apply what you read. It really works.
Rating: Summary: great book! Review: I've ordered this book after having read the book from the library. I wanted my own copy so I can highlight the excellent information and insight Dell has for his readers. I read the book for his insight to tax lien certificates and found even more useful info as he talked about small businesses-info that spoke directly to me as a wannabe entrepeneur. I definitely recommend this book for those who wish to create money with little investment!
Rating: Summary: Mike Dell is a modern day Henry Ford! Review: Just as Henry Ford pioneered the automobile industry, so has Michael Dell pioneered the computer industry. This book is a easy read, but highly informative. I also bought the tapes which I play in my car. I have reread this book 4 times and I always come up with a new idea that is profitable to my business.
Rating: Summary: Dell sets high goals and then exceeds them! Review: I've heard of people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth, Mike Dell with born with the whole darn cutlery set! From selling his stamp collection at age 12 for a tithy profit, through exceeding his teachers salaries while selling newspapers in High School, starting the world's # 1 PC Company in his dorm room and in turn creating a stock that has grown 33,000% in the last five years. This man is absolutely incredible!!What is really interesting is that you would expect these accomplishments from a man well into his 50's or 60's. Mike is only in his 30's. The kid is just getting warmed up.Direct from Dell is a living testimony of the American Free Enterprise system in action.Mike Dell; the man who set his goals high and then surpassed them in record breaking time. This book is a great read. I also recommend Magic of Thinking Big and I believe that Mike Dell would recommend that book also.
