From antenna alternatives, pros and cons of varying polarization, business issues to consider and multitudes of other factors that must be balanced to support a customer service organization delivering wireless internet services. Thanks! My entire staff was required to read this book cover to cover.

Review: Deploying License-Free Wireless Wide-Area Networks by Jack Unger (Founder and President of Wireless InfoNet, Inc.) is a handy, "start-to-finish", 329-page guide about the design, installation, operation, support information and more for wireless Internet Service Providers, as well as any others using outdoor wireless wide-area networks which are broadband and license-free (meaning that they offer high-speed Internet access without requiring the use of products and services of local telephone and cable companies). An informative, practical, accessible and information-packed technical account, Deploying License-Free Wireless Wide-Area Networks filled with troubleshooting tips and a very highly recommended addition to any academic or professional wireless communications reference shelf.

Review: I teach data networks at a community college, and came upon this text as I reviewed material for a wireless networking class. Mr. Unger delivers super-clear explanations while maintaining a high level of information. If you are interested in obtaining a good grasp of wireless networks, consider this text. Please note that I don't know Mr. Unger personally, and do not benefit from this endorsement in any way, shape, or form.

Review: If you are interested in a wireless Wide Area network then this is the book for you. Novices to experts will get a comprehensive detailed explanation of how to implement wireless wide area networks. From the definitions to the diagrams and equations detailing what is needed, where to place it, how it works and how to troubleshoot it to keep it running, Mr. Unger has covered it all. He is direct and to the point in giving you useful information on site surveying, antenna evaluation, selecting equipment, installing outdoor wireless systems, solving noise and interference problems, internet access. One look at the table of contents of each chapter listed in the beginning of the book you will have the entire story. Each chapter is full of information to enrich your knowledgebase and will also assist in the pursuit of the wireless certifications. The book keeps the focus on the subject matter at hand while not subjecting you to a dry boring delivery. Although technical, it is easy to follow no matter what your experience level. There is a ten step process for selecting the preliminary network architecture that makes the reader feel that success is very easy to achieve. There are details on how perform site surveys, he makes understanding radio frequencies simple, you learn almost everything there is to know about antennas and evaluating and selecting your equipment. This book gives you the principles of all wireless systems while staying vendor neutral you know you are able to apply this information to most brands of hard ware and software. The information on 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g equipment is useful whether you are using it in your home, office or outdoors. Summary: Information you won't get any other place!
Review: Mr. Unger has taken a topic not often discussed and almost never written about and has done an absolutely wonderful job with it! Even if you are not interested in becoming a WISP or needing that technology, you should have this book as a reference. The material that he covers in regards to the 802.11x standard is literally worth its weight in gold. His information on antennas, different LOS types and trooubleshooting could be a book itself. And for any of you looking to obtain any of the various WLAN certifications (Planet3, GlobalNet, Cisco, etc.), this book is a "keeper". Keep up the good work Mr. Unger!

It covers around 3/4 of the CWNA exam material and is very straightforward and easy to read. His experience in the industry certainly shows through his graphic examples and detailed instructions. If you're planning on starting a WISP, this is the book for you. If you're interested in passing the CWNA exam, this book is highly recommended as supplemental reading material due to its tight focus on the ever-growing and ever-changing WISP market. There are many complex topics that Jack spells out clearly and concisely. Bravo on a job well done Jack!

Review: This is the best book in the wireless industry. A very easy read, Deploying License Free Wireles Wide Area Networks is laid out in a manner that builds upon the information from earlier chapters. Jack is very thorough in the information presented. Jack's book includes everything from the basics of the physics of microwave propogation, designing your wireless network infrastruce, doing site surveys, choosing wireless network equipment and antenna selection. For layperson and professional alike, every reader is sure to benefit from the vast knowledge Jack presents in this book.

Summary: Buyer Beware! This book is GREAT...!
Review: Whether you're an experienced LAN/WAN professional or are new to the field and looking to "get your feet wet", this book will enrich your knowledgebase and possibly open new doors of opportunity for you. Being an experienced LAN/WAN professional with 19 years of experience and dozens of certifications, I thank the author for not filling the book with dry-humored jokes, useless "real life" experiences, and confusing diagrams/ illustrations. This book is grammatically correct (except for 2 spelling errors), technically accurate, focused, and very helpful whether you're pursuing wireless certification or not. Beginner and experienced networking professionals will appreciate the "vendor neutral" content of the book. The book is published by Cisco Press, but contains no specific references to CISCO brand hardware/software. I believe this makes the information even more useful to technicians and installers who work with varying vendor equipment. While many concepts and methodologies are the same, this book is true to its name and offers little help in the way of assisting you with indoor WLAN deployments. The wealth of useful information contained in Appendix B, "Wireless Hardware, Software, and Service Provider Organizations" is absolutely priceless and much appreciated. The book contains no CD-ROM or marketing material (kudos!). Published prior to the finalized 802.11g standard, the book primarily covers 802.11a and 802.11b technologies. Both Mr. Unger and Cisco Press deserve a round of applause!
