Rating: Summary: A Really Helpful Study Review: A.Field's "Discovering Statistics" (using SPSS for Windows)is a must book for not only undergraduate and graduate students but also for the instructors like myself. The language of the book is stimulating the redaer, and Mr.Field's way of explanation is both a creative one and has the sense of humor which makes the book more readable. Its content is well-designed and the reader is able to follow up what each type of analysis is all about, and more importantly how the outcome shoul be interpreted. Although first chapters are written as a refreshment of statistical knowledge, I would like to suggest to the reader to have a primary knowledge about both the basics of research methodology and statistical methods as well as statistical techniques to use them in accordance with the research problem(s).I would also like to point out the fact that some critical issues like "the meaning of standart error" is explained in an efficient way in comparison to that of ordinary statistics textbooks. In short, the book is, indeed, a very helpful one for anybody who wants to use SPSS for this or another reason.

Rating: Summary: "An essential book of statistics" Review: Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows uncovers simultaneously the functional foundations of basic statistic and how to work with SPSS statistical software. In addition, Andy Field transformed complex concepts into palatable words. Therefore, if you do not have much time and need to learn statistics in a short period, this is the best book avalailable.
Rating: Summary: Clear and concise Review: Dr. Field,Has written a book that should be an example to all others writing about: 1. SPSS and 2. Research methods. As a grad student I have been trying to put together all the stats classes that I have taken and the SPSS class I took and make sense out of it. This book was the final key that brought it all together. Based on logic ... its funny that the science of statistics should be so without logic as far as teaching goes. Again, this book is the way that books on stats and SPSS should be written. My only problems: 1. That while there is a lot covered, I wish that he would go through all (or almost all) of the statistical applications available in SPSS and 2. I would've liked to see a "refresher" on the commands to complete the statistical process talked about, at the end of the chapter. In summary, this book is the only book that I would recommend to those in need of help regarding SPSS and statistics. I can't wait for his new book, co-authored by Dr. Hole.
Rating: Summary: Excellent resource Review: Easy to read but very thorough. Doesn't just tell you how to use the menus, but walks you through the entire statistical process. Spends a lot of time teaching you how to check your statistical assumptions, which is so important. Book has been invaluable to me, both for using SPSS and for improving my statistical skills. Sections on GLM techniques and regression are particularly good.
Rating: Summary: The best SPSS book on the market Review: Field's book is simply the best volume written yet for beginning users of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Unlike most stats or software books, Field uses humor, wit and quirky real world examples to provide an easy and enjoyable read. The version I purchased came with a CD including all the data used in the book's examples. Chapters 1-4 are great primers for stats and Field does eventually take the reader into some more sophisticated analyses including Logistic Regression and Factor Analysis. Step by step instructions are supplemented by screen captures and graphs. This is an invaluable book for anyone faced with the challenge of learning SPSS for a class or for business. I would recommend it over any of the 15 or so books I've read regarding SPSS -- including the official manuals!
Rating: Summary: This is the book you are looking for Review: Great book! The only drawback is that it doesn't go into much on the SPSS advanced models. That said however, it is a well-written, funny book with easily understandable examples that makes learning the stats and SPSS a breeze. It should be a model for all statistics books in the social sciences!

Rating: Summary: Statistics is cool! after reading this book Review: I have spend lots of bucks in finding a appropriate book that explains the basics of statistics. Majority of the books claims that they provide the basics but they often use jargons, and contains lack of simple explanation, usage of proper technique and interpretation. But this is not the case with this book. This book starts with explaining the fundamentals in very plain and easy to understand language. I got a feeling that statistics is not at all tough and is fun provided if we have good explanation as in this book. This book provides you with teh basics, choosing correct stat and interpreting and the bonus part is it demonstrates how to carry out stat in spss. Very easy to understand and I wish i could have this book before i spend lots of bucks. I thank you to the writer for providing such an excellent book.
Rating: Summary: This book saved my life Review: I have taken statistics as an undergrad and as an MBA student. I am good at math, not the stereotypical math phobic female. But I always have had problems connecting the statistics with what to do, when to do it and what the results were telling me. Well, here I am again as a graduate student working on a Masters degree in Sociology. I am working on my thesis and this book pulled everything together. It matched up SPSS and statistics so that you know what to do, why to do it, how to make SPSS do what you want, and how to interpret the results. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is very clear, very cogent, in English as opposed to stero instructions, and charming as well. I highly recommend it!
