Summary: Great source for your ISO Qualification process
Review: Thank you Mr. Page! About two years ago, it was determined that to survive in the aerospace business my company would have to get ISO 9000 qualification. Each department head was informed that he/she would be responsible for DOP's And SOP's within their group. Not being a writer, panic set in - how do you write an effective non-ambiguous procedure? Then I came across Mr. Page's book. It walked me through step by step on how to write procedures correctly. My co-workers followed his guidelines as well. I think in some respects his book helped get us through our ISO audit. By the way, the section on intranet helped us with our sales force in the field. We now send via intranet DOP's related to the sales force for review and signiture. Mr. Page's book is clear and concise. It is just what a busy person with limited time like myself was looking for in a "how to " book.

Summary: The Writing Format Makes the Book
Review: The writing format contained in this book in chapter 4 is the simplest and easiest format I have seen and used to date. I have bought most of the other books on procedures on the Internet and none come close to the quality of this book. I think this book is well-written and I believe that the author meant it to be well written.

This book contains a simple structure of writing policies and procedures from A to Z. I just loved this book and have recommended it to all my friends.

Summary: A good hands-on book
Review: This book helped me to do my job better right away. Anyone else who has to write procedures for ISO 9000 can use Steve Page's system. He gives practical suggestions for interviewing users and flowcharting a process. Steve has a standard format which covers all the basic document requirements. Documentation management is also discussed. Paper documentation is Steve's specialty. On-line documentation is also discussed, but I would recommend other books that have more details.

Summary: Excellent Ideas, Excellent Thoughts
Review: This book is a blessing to all us novice writers who don't understand how to set up a system of policies and procedures.

The reviewer that thought the book was too shallow obviously didn't read this book in any depth. In fact, he/she can't even spell. I wouldn't trust someone who would post a review to millions that has simple spelling mistakes.

The reviewer tries to point out that processes and policies don't go together. If this reviewer really read the book, he would have realized that processes and procedures go together. The author never mentioned anything about policies and processes. Or this was a blatant misinterpretation.

The reviewer had nothing practical to say, he jumped on simple points. This book is PACKED with information about writing format, style, teambuilding, review and approval cycles, publishing tips, communications, and training guidelines. Notice the reviewer never mentioned this, only picked at "shallow" points.

And to say that every policy is different, I agree with that except that this author stresses consistency as being key to the reader's understanding. If the format of a policy is different from one time to the next, then the reader becomes confused. My company used to write as the reviewer suggested and it got us into trouble. We changed to the writing format recommended in this book and our audience loves us now. Thanks go to this author.

So if you see a reviewer trashing this book, let him or her suggest a better one. No book is perfect. But this book comes close.

Summary: blew my mind and my procedures
Review: This book was absolutely incredible. Mr. Page is a God of procedures and policies. I write policies and procedures for a company that writes policies and procedures for improving other companies policies and procedures. He writes so clear and concise and concise and clearly, about policies and procedures and policies about precedures and vice versa, that my policies and procedures improved to become better policies and procedures about policies and procedures and...phew, got a little excited! thanks dr. P, you have a true gift from god. Some people are good at writing about policies, and some about procedures, but you're a double threat. You're like the bo jackson of policies and procedures. Keep up the great work, and i look forward to the sequel, cuz I want to buy the box set! snort! ;)

Summary: Solid, straightforward and effective
Review: This is my third book by Mr. Page and it does not disappoint. I started with his Achieving 100% Compliance of Policies and Procedures, which is best suited for advanced policy and procedures developers in quality environments, and followed with his 7 Steps to Better Written Policies and Procedures. The latter book is better suited as a training manual or quick reference guide.

This book, however, is a straightforward "how to" book, and it gives procedures for writing policies and procedures that are effective and clear. What I like about this book is Mr. Page stays focused on the basics, and sorts out the key issues. If you've never written policies and/or procedures this book will step you through the process with no fluff. That doesn't mean the book is terse. On the contrary, the book explains in necessary detail how to develop policies and procedures that reflect best practices. Having read all of Mr. Page's books, and also having an extensive background in policy and procedure development, I can attest that the approach is mature and will assure success if followed.

As with other reviewers I've noticed a few typos and convoluted sentences. However, these did not detract from the book's value because they did not change the context of the book's content or make it difficult to follow. If you need to write policies and/or procedures and have never done it before get this book and follow it. You'll be impressed with the results using the approach, and you'll also benefit from Mr. Page's extensive knowledge of the subject by avoiding false starts, as well as producing documents that are solid and clearly written.

Summary: Excellent introductory book on the subject
Review: This logically-sequenced book is a great starting point for anyone who is faced with the task of writing policies and procedures. By following the book's clearly described steps you will be led through the development of policies and procedures that will be unambiguous and clearly stated.

More importantly, the policies and procedures will incorporate document and revision control elements that are essential to ensuring that the right version is used. This is especially important for companies that employ quality programs, such as ISO 9000.

While some of the writing is stilted, and there are some typos, this book is the best introductory text I've come across (and I have a shelf full of similar books), and one that I recommend without reservation to anyone who is faced with the task of writing policies and procedures. If you're an experienced policies and procedures writer I recommend that you forego this book and get, instead, the author's "Achieving 100% Compliance of Policies and Procedures".

Summary: Very poorly written.
Review: Very poorly written, especially by someone who writes policies and procedures for a living. Excessive use of the passive tense, prepositional phrases and the word "should."
