Rating: Summary: Very bad book for beginner Review: I am a Computer Engineering student at University of Toronto. If you notice, the authors of this book are from my university. I agree that this is a very bad book for beginners because I just finish an Introduction to Electronics course. This book contains too little examples and all of the examples are too easy compare to the exercises. This causes many students to have a difficult time understand the practical concepts. The books has so many errors on the examples. This also makes beginners to be fustrated and it is very time consumming trying to figure out what is wrong while learning at the same time... Last but not least the reason why I think this is a bad book because it doesn't explain how to apply all the concepts to real world problems... It just throw at you all the theories, numbers, and units and not to mentions many are wrong.
Rating: Summary: Boook about Circuits Design, rather than Microelectronic Review: This book is required textbook in our EECS Department, however, I turned out reading Millman's Electronics to finish the course. You do learn some trick or say arts regarding circuit design, but not principles of microelectronic. If you're good at circuit analysis, you would wonder why memorize so many models/formulas which are easy to draw out(probably only good for examination, as you might have no time to do the jobs)? Instead of understanding the physics/limitation of devices and apply your knowledge form circuit analysis?! It's better for you to learn circuit theory/microelectroinc separately and then dip into advanced book, like Gray's Analog design, for consolidation.
Rating: Summary: A Meandering Experience Review: This book is equiproportionate in its strengths and weaknesses. Some topics are just brilliant, while some could not be more confusing. You should buy this book if you need an electronics review. It tends to get into great depths straight away so beginners should be a bit wary. This books also tries to be a Jack of All Trades. It has extensive sections on both Analog and Digital Electronics. Due to all this overkill, the book is so bloated that it should be the reason you were waiting all along to take health insurance. I have only read the Analog parts of the text. What I have read till now looks pretty good. The only problem is that basics are not always emphasized on. Before you are snuggled into a chapter, the Roller Coaster of concepts begin. So you might need to rub into a chapter many times before you get the hang of it. Overall, I think you should be on the lookout for something more basic if you are beginner. If you are already an expert at it, go ahead and buy it ( and get a strong book shelf ready).
Rating: Summary: A very bumpy ride for a beginner Review: I have tried my best to use this book as my primary textbook for introductory electronics. Unfortunately, my frustration with this book is still about the same. Every chapter or section starts out very clearly and seems to make perfect sense. But all of a sudden an avalanche of new information follwos in the form of (step-by-step)analysis and (tips) that no beginner student can possibly find intuitive. I got somethings out of this book, but only the very basic concepts. Advanced concepts are not covered with the biginner student in mind. Recently, I have come across the book by P.R. Gray and R.G. Meyer. Supposedly that is a higer level book than Sedra's. But it actually makes much more sense to me than "Microelectronic Circuits". I think it's much more structured,and geared toward developing the true understanding that a designer needs. I still use Sedra's book as a reference, however, every now and then.

Rating: Summary: excellent engineering text Review: This is a classic text. I stumbled upon this book by mistake and I am glad that I did. The concept of transistors and amplifiers was rather nebulous to me before this book. After this all was light. This is very lucid and fun book to read. Everybody I recommended this book to was very happy with it. In fact a friend of mine borrowed my copy and then sat on it for a month. The book gives a good theoretical understanding of the topics and offers some very practical ways to analyze circuits (my favourite is the resistance reflection rule). The coverage is fairly extensive. Almost all that a second year engineering student may expect to encounter is in this book. I am sure that this book will also serve as a great reference to professionals should they ever need to recap some basics. The only thing I missed was Operational Transconductance Amplifiers. To sum up a great book very strongly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Dense, Murky, and Confusing Review: I enountered this text in an introductory microelectronics course. I am a student of electrical engineering with a better than average overall gradepoint. This book was a daily trial. I found the explanations to terse and underdeveloped. Important concepts were buried in dense text. I found the notation adopted extremely confusing. The authors chose a system of circuit diagram conventions that were not clearly explained giving rise to much frustration. My husband is a graduate electrical engineer and he thought it was too advanced for an introductory text. I survived the course by buying several other texts on microelectronics and learning from them. This is a desperate act for a student, I was willing to spend about $200 to get past this text. It is the worst text that I have ever been forced to use.

From basic properties of materials and components to circuit analysis, the book explains the theory in a clear and accurate manner. I own this book since 10 years and I still refer to it. This book never ages!!

This book is a great reference for anyone who is interested in electronics
