Summary: Essential Crypto Overview
Review: Clearly a monumental work. Easy reading style, thorough treatment of protocols and ciphers of all styles and purposes...if you read this and don't pick up something useful then I want to hire you!

Copious and meticulous references. Consistent style throughout is a big plus. Dry wit (Alice and Bob find a book on Artificial Inteligence lying discarded and unused on the road...)makes for fun reading.

The only thing I would wish for is a clearer delineation between protocols and ciphers in the public domain vs. patented.

Summary: Buku ni best lah dalam kajian security!
Review: Kawan-kawan sekalian yang suka hack sini sana ke, buku ni memang bolen mengeraskan lu punya pandangan. Kalau matematik engkau baik jugak, buku ni boleh jadi benda rujukan anda kalau lu nak cipta algorithma kripto. Okek leh, tak mau cakap banyak sangat. Buku ni memang baik, pegi beli sekarang!

Summary: The essential bible for communications security
Review: From theory to protocols to the source code of some of the most popular algorithms. Detailed analysis of some of the most secure cryptosystems ever to appear on paper (outside the NSA), and for the truely paranoid, an extensive reference index, citing over 1600 publications. Flowcharts, diagrams, and examples detail the 'hows' and 'whys' behind DES, IDEA, and countless others. This is the reference that reads like a novel. Anyone concerned with SECURITY and PRIVACY, this is a must have.

Summary: Stress on "Applied" in the title...
Review: The book is maybe 15% theory, just enough to give you a grounding in what's going on, the rest is in-the-trenches crypto. As the author says, it is for programmers and engineers, not math grad students...

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Fails to explore the mathematics behind crypto
Review: Although this book presents a broad introduction to various crypto methods, it devotes little or no time to the actual mathematics/implementation of a REAL crypto system. Apparently Bruce feels that the C source code in the back of the book is sufficient! This book is fine for someone who isn't interested in the esoteric details of crypto. If you want a more in depth analysis, I recommend the Handbook of Applied Cryptography or Implementing Elliptic Curve Cryptography.

Summary: The Britannica of Cryptography
Review: Schneier's book is a surprisingly down-to-earth encyclopedia of the data scrambling technology which secures electronic communication worldwide, and which the US Government has tried for years to keep in the bag. Understanding cryptography is a must for anyone interested in the technology behind privacy on-line, and Schneier's book is the best source there is.

Review: Translates to: It was the best book I could find on cryptography for C :

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Amazing
Review: I wouldn't really recommend reading this book from cover to cover, but it has some very interesting sections and can be used as an awesome reference guide.

Summary: If you buy only one cryptography book...
Review: ...this is the one to buy. A straightforward read, with clear and unambiguous descriptions of crytography concepts, algorithms and implementations. Not exactly a book for beginners, though; it is clearly an intermediate text, with lots of mathematical detail (most of which was WAY over my head, but I kinda-sorta understood some of the simpler math). Schneier also goes to great lengths to insure the accuracy of the book and publishes a detailed errata on his web site.

I'm looking forward to the 3rd edition already...

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Fabulous!
Review: This book is the definitive source on encryption and cryptanalysis. Bruce Schneier is amazing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to know ANYTHING on the subject.
