Summary: Good Introduction to Wireless Communications..
Review: A must-have for a beginner in the field of Wireless Communications. The author covers a wide range of topics starting from basic Cellular System engineering to topics like mobile channel characterization, fading and diversity, channel coding, modulation etc.. The book also provides a very good introduction to First and Second generation Mobile communication standards. The authors style is very good and easy to understand. A lot of unnecessary math is avoided and very good overview is presented.

But the thing I liked the most in this book is the exercise problems at the end of each chapter and the references. Working out the problems in the end will help a lot in gaining a deeper insight into the concepts explained in the book.

Overall.. this book certainly deserves 5 *'s !

Summary: Indepth theory and aplication of wireless systems & devices
Review: As a highly informative book relating to all aspects of wireless communications it is an invaluable reference for telecommunications and electrical engineering majors. I recommend a prerequisite in basic communications and a strong mathematical understanding of calculus II and differential equations. The book covers all aspects of wireless communications including IR, Microwave, Satellite, Fiber, Cellular, PMC, wireless networks, propagation models, and Spread Spectrum CDMA. Engineers and technologists that are interested in the field of telecommunications will gain a competitive edge though the information contained in this book

Summary: Caveat Emptor
Review: As a lecturer in Mobile Telecommunications I was concerned that this book is light on detail in some places, and authoritatively wrong in others. For example, the author makes basic errors in his description of the GSM logical architecture (particularly with respect to the network databases) and he does not describe the current HR and EFR GSM voice codecs; the section on IS-95 CDMA does not describe soft handoff or cell identification in detail and has not been updated to describe IS-95A. His derivation of Erlang B is also missing a number of key steps. These factors make this textbook unrecommendable for my students. A THOROUGH revision is in order for the next edition.

Summary: Great Overall, but lacking in some areas
Review: For the most part, this book is nothing short of outstanding. It EXPLAINS key concepts and writes mathematical formulas only when necessary. For understanding the indoor and outdoor channel, this book is top notch. HOWEVER, in certain areas such as diversity and especially coding I found this book lacking. Having taken an Algebraic Coding course before I found the author wasted paper since nothing in this section was explained properly and I feel anyone who hasn't had any exposure or secondary reference will get anything out of it. Hopefully another edition of this book is made where lacking areas are explained better or cut entirely.

Summary: Good book for introduction
Review: I think this is a good book for introduction of wireless communications.But it didn't talk about propagation deeply. If somebody is interested in wireless propagation for indoor and outdoor channels, I will recommend the book by Henry L. Bertoni--radio propagation for modern wireless systems. Enjoy it.

Summary: A Very Good Book in Wireless Comm.
Review: I took a course in wireless communication and this book was asigned to us. The book is very good but I think it is not the best. It is not deep math. As a graduate student I think the book of Stuber "Principles of Mobile Communication" is better.

Summary: Excellent Introductory Book for Wireless Communications
Review: I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a good introductory book on wireless communications. The book clearly explains all the important concepts of wireless communications without all the annoying math that accompanies most electrical engineering textbooks.

Summary: Pretty light
Review: If I had not seen the Gorden Stuber book I would have given this book only 1 star. However in comparison, it does deserve at least 2.

This book has all the stuff you would want in a wireless text book. It covers fading, Rayleigh, Rician, GSM, AMPS etc. My major complaint with the book is THERE ARE NO EXAMPLES. Per chapter there are probably 3 or 4 examples, but none of them are really challenging.

For instance in the fading chapter, the examples are on coherence time only. How about a couple examples that actually use the fading PDF's/CDF's. We spend so much time "discussing" the distributions, maybe it is time we actually use the distributions?

Compared to "Principles of Mobile Communication" the book is marginally better. For one it is not as heavy on the math, and it does a better job explaining pretty well everything.

However.. I feel I learned far more from Shankar's wireless book in undergrad.

Summary: Comprehensive graduate-level introduction to wireless comms
Review: In my opinion, THE book for introductory coursework in wireless (non-satellite) communications systems. Though the author claims the material can be covered in a single semester, I think it is better to plan a two-semester sequence at either the advanced undergraduate or early graduate levels. A background in calculus, probability theory, and communications signal analysis is necessary.
