Rating: Summary: An entertaining and enlightening book Review: I read all customer reviews for several Java Programmer study guides submitted a couple of months after the latest edition of each book. Based on the reviews, I decided to buy Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates. Although the book has two minor flaws, it was all I needed to pass the exam. The imperfections are: typos, and not very user-friendly design of the accompanying CD. You may (and should) correct the typos which are listed on...To deal with the 2nd blemish, take the Open Book exams and select the maximum number of questions (65). Do not use the Hint button, and after you answered each question click the Reference button to verify your logic. The questions and the answers are good; I did 3 different exams and found only 1 typo, easily forgivable given the size of the book and the CD. Overall, the book is an easy read and it will definitely get you ready for the exam.
Rating: Summary: If you plan on passing, this book is a must Review: If you want to pass the Java Programmer exam, this is the book to get. I spent about two months studing the book and example exam questions. When it came time to take the test, I was not surpised by the format or diffuculty of the Java Programmer exam. If you are thinking about taking the exam. You must study! This book will be the only one you need.
Rating: Summary: Do not get any other book!!! Review: I was studying for this test for months and things were not moving that fast with the other book I had. The material was dry and the book was very unorganized. I came on Amazon and read the reviews on this one and saw that people liked it and decided that I would get it 2 weeks before the test. Well I started from scratch again, granted I am a full time Java programmer and I get to practice what I learn; but I have to give most of the credit to the authors of this book for the good score that I got. Thank you!!!
Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: Best of the certification books. But the exam on the accompanying CD could be much better. Both standard of questions and user experience are not that good.
Rating: Summary: The only book needed for passing the exam! Review: Excellent book!! This is the only book that you need to pass the programmer certification. I read this book twice, I got 93% in certification. Although I have 3years experience on Java, this book helped me more than my java experience to clear this exam. FYI:The author runs a web site, javaranch.com. Great site with a lot of tips and mock exams. all the best!!!
Rating: Summary: "THE BEST BOOK" for JAVA 1.4 Exam Review: If u are a total novice to java, read EVERY PAGE of this book, do ALL the excercises, tests and be assured of scoring atleast 85% in the 1.4 version exam. This book + 2 Exams in exam cram's SCJP book = My score 95 % Thanks Kathy !!!
Rating: Summary: This book makes me pass the exam Review: This is the best book I have even seen for the Java 2 exam preparation. I got 91%. It gives you a thorough understanding of the concepts you need to know to pass the exam. The included mock exam is very similar to the real test. This book alone is enough for you. Thank you, Kathy.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and Complete Source For Programmer Exam. Review: A complete book for Programmer certification exam, but I cannot say this for the Developer part of the book. I love this book because of its light mood that makes preparation for the exam a fun process. The two exam simulation/practice tests on the accompanying CD plus the one I downloaded from the Internet helped me fine tune my preparation with their answer guides. Got 86%. Thankyou God. Thankyou Kathy and Bert.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tool. Review: This and lots of time spent of JavaRanch.com was all I need to get a 95%. Oh yeah, I had some practical experience with Java as well. I found the mock exams that come with this book to be the most accurate representation of the real deal.
Rating: Summary: Good book but limited Review: Ok, I guess I'm the "odd ball" because I feel that a technical book on programming should provide source code to compile and run without hand typing every line of code. This book does not provide anyway, other than hand typing in the code or purchasing a program that will allow you to cut an paste from a .pdf file. I've read a lot of technical book and have yet to find one that does not have errors but could usually determine if what they said was an error or not by testing the code. Beside, "practice make perfect" (practice by hand typing every line of code is unacceptable). For this I give the book a -5. .... However, on the good side, I give this book a 5 on learning Java because it did give me some insight into the language. It's a shame that the publisher's choice was a .pdf file instead of a .html file or providing source code on the CD. The authors are actually excellent.
