Summary: Best Java book I have ever read
Review: This is by far the best book to prepare for the SCJP 1.4 exam. If you are already familar with Java, reading and understanding this book will certainly help you get a passing score. I have been using Java off and on for about 5 years, I spent the last 2 weeks preparing for the exam using only this book. I just returned from the testing center with a passing score! The exam is not easy, but the material covered in this book will get you prepared. Don't just read it, understand it and you will do well. Thanks Kathy and Bert!

Summary: what a book!
Review: it's the only thing you need to pass the certification exam. The book is fun, easy to read and understand. The 2 minute drill, and the chapter questions are the key to remember and practice for the last hours of the exam. The mock exams that came with it are very similar to the exam.

Stick to it, and you'll pass with flying colors.

Summary: A key to success...
Review: I used this book to study the testing format for the SCJP exam together with The Java Programming Language and The Java Language Specification for details where I needed them. After reading this book and working all the examples and taking all the practice exams, I felt comfortably prepared to take the Java Programmer exam, which I passed today with 95%.

I'm convinced that if you know Java at least to the point of being able to write simple programs, then this is the only ***exam study guide*** you need.

That said, I highly recommend supplementing the study guide with a good tutorial -- either a book or the free ones from Sun -- and a fair amount of time at the keyboard typing, running, breaking and fixing code. Then, spend a few days or weeks taking practice exams to get familiar with the types of things you'll see on the exam. (By the way, this book comes with two electronic exams and a lot of end-of-chapter questions, all of which I thought were very close to the real thing.)

Thanks for a great book, Kathy and Bert (and all the editors and reviewers who assisted K & B).

Summary: Great book
Review: I just got back from testing center. I got 85%. I used only this book. The book is amazing, it will never let you down. I studied only for 3 weeks. So just read and read it.
If you want to pass exam, then this the book you need it.

I like to thanks Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates for writing such a great book.

Summary: Great Focus on exam questions
Review: This book is really the only one you need to pass the exam, even if you have been working with java the exam is full of trick questions and strange code to make you miss the question. This book lets you be ready for those questions and helps you understand the exam objectives perfectly. The included exams also help a lot. Some one planning on getting certified should check this book just to be better prepared to avoid the tricky questions in the exam.

Summary: The Best
Review: Hi All,
I bought this book a two-months ago and wrote the programmer exam an hour ago and Guess what I passed the exam...what made me write this review so fast is that fact that aleast i found 10 questions/61 in the exam from this book...and the for the rest of the questions you will find the references some where in the book. So if any one wants to take the exam, I want you guys to consider this book very seriously
:-)
Good Luck

Summary: Right on target...bullseye
Review: This book does exactly what it is intended to do, teach you what will be on the exam. The watches are very helpful and the multiple sample tests have questions that are VERY similar to the actual exam. Buy this one!

Summary: It worked for me
Review: Well, I tore through several other books that "prepared" you for the tests - but until I found this book I always knew my knowledge of the fiddly bits was lacking. Sure, I could code it up rather well, but there are so many bits that just don't enter into the picture while you are working.

When I came across this book it filled in those questions and then some. I built a good collection of flash cards based upon their questions and the rest is history (of the good sort).

Summary: The Best Book for SCJP 1.4 Exam.
Review: Just today morning i wrote the exam and I scored 98 % all of which due to the one and only book by Kathy sierra and Bert bates. This is the only book you have to go through for the exam no matter u are a experienced Java Programmer or a Beginner, U need this book to come out with flying colours ...
The exam questions very much similar to the review questions given in the book and also the mock exam in the CD was also very much useful for my preparation towards the Exam.
So I recommend all of those who are preparing for the SCJP 1.4 exam to go thru this book atleast once. ALL THE BEST ....

Summary: Saves you from the traps of the exam and more
Review: I passed the 1.4 exam a few days agao. The exam was not easy, but I am sure it would have been much more difficult without this book which I find great in the following areas :

1) It familiarised me with the format of the exam (well, it may be surprising but some exam books currently in the market do have practice questions carrying formats which are out of date!)

2) The book's many sections on possible exam traps are life-saving.

3) Using a lot of examples to illustrate, it explains the concepts of the language well. I used altogether 4 books for the exam and this book explains the concepts best.

4) The writing style is lively. Whether we like it or not, preparing for the exam does involve a lot of hours. A book with humor between the pages helps you to keep going. I personally find this most important.
