Rating: Summary: Best Certification Book I have Used Review: I really enjoyed this book on many levels. First of all, everything is here and explained fully. Hard to grasp topics are unfolded piece by piece with plenty of very pertinent exam alerts. The questions in the book were harder for me than the actual exam, which was good. Secondly, it is well written with personality and some real good natured humor, like calling a Thread that is Running as "in the big time" and "what it's all about". Other books that have had a personality writing rather than a machine have sometimes gone too far with it and left out material. Not this one, the good writing and clever humor all adds to the unusual excellence of this work. The book is full of challenging questions and clear examples. Most computer books have typos or incorrect answers marked by mistake. I could find nothing but accuracy and attention to detail on every page. If certification books all came like this, it would be a better experience for everyone improving their skills. I passed solidly today and I know Java in far more detail now than I did before. This is the ONE!
Rating: Summary: This and some practice tests are all you need to pass easily Review: This book in addition to Euthuware's ( www.enthuware.com ) test suite are a perfect combination to passing the test with ease.My recommendation? Go through the book 3-4 times, when you start to remember the chapter test questions and answers, then move to Euthuware's software. But without this book, the test is almost useless. BUY THIS BOOK! Perogi.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Excellent book. I passed the exam with 85%. Book is well organized with all materials needed for the exam preparation.
Rating: Summary: This is the bible for 310-035 Review: I passed the test today, and its true, if you are familiar with Java this is the only book youll need to pass the exam, I did it. This book sets you up for exactly the type of questions that will be asked. Their where no suprises on the test. The book is very detailed and complete. The questions in the book and on the CD are actually harder than the real questions. The only thing I can say the book could improve on is that sometimes rambles on about simple things and darts threw some comlicated items. But overall its great!
Rating: Summary: Everything you need to pass the SCJP Review: You'll need a little Java experience and a little OO knowledge to make full use of this book. (but I do mean a *little*.) Building on that scant foundation this book will elevate your knowledge of Java details to well within the required knowledge to pass the SCJP. The writing style is fairly informal, so it reads easily, and there are excellent review and test sections which are critical to gaging your performance and providing review tools after you've read the book. There's a software test that comes with the book as well, which gives you some of the 'look and feel' of the real exam. This was the only SCJP book that I used, but it was enough.
Rating: Summary: Just Cool ! Review: Kathy is so cool ! you can just lie down and go on reading for hours. I got 91% and all the credit goes to Kathy and Bert !
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Great book to pass SCJP..I bought this book and I am reading it with great understaning for many issues I did not understand when I used to make programes in java...this is very good source for the poeple who KNOW java but they need to pass sun's exam .
Rating: Summary: Best Book For All Levels Review: I just started programming 8 months ago, I found that Java is the best language that I can study, and I found that the fastest way to learn is to get certified from the source, they know what you need, I bought that book and started studying. Because I'm new to programming, it took me 6 months to prepare for the test, I took the test and got 88%. The book gave me everything I need for the test, here is the full preparation set I used for the exam: 1- Studying the book. 2- J2SE APIs documents. 3- Java compiler. 4- Included cd exams. 5- javaranch.com 6- SUN site exams. By the way I made the localization for a huge militarian project and I made it neat, great thanks for the book authers.
Rating: Summary: Best one for SCJP Review: Pass the exam with 81%. I was expecting more but never mind. This book has made everything easy. But make sure you have good Java programming experience otherwise it's hard (confusing). You need more time for preparation if you are new to Java. Also make sure you do practice exam more & more...last thing Author has good command on Java but readers (not everybody) are not pusher..so stop making high remarks in your next book...
Rating: Summary: Good book but with a quite a few gaps (Pl. read for details) Review: This book is a good effort where the information is presented in a simplistic and lucid way. However I would like to point out the areas where this book is lacking: 1)Assertion Mechanism:- Doesnt cover the different kinds of invariants and pre / post conditions. Simply having a DO & DONT section in not enough 2)Poor treatment of inner classes and the chapter on collections is very hapazardly presented. 3)Inadequate treatment of threads, doesnt cover a few extra methods like setDaemon, interrupt etc and questions in the book are way too easy 4)Also there is absolutely no coverage of type-casting for classes and interfaces although an earlier chapter asks the reader to refer chapter 5 for that. I would stronly urge readers to purchase SUN's practice tests and only then will you get a real idea of the exam. Once you hit scores in excess of 90% on them go for the real thing (I am assuming you are aiming for an excellent score). The real exam has very tough questions on threads in particular. Good-Luck to all propective test takers.
