Summary: Too much humour...
Review:

This book isn't so bad, however I have some things I have to say:

1. Too much humour: At the beginning I liked it, however, when you learn it into deep for the certification, it is quite disturbing and confusing too. I tried always to keep concentrated on the Java stuff that is required for the exam, but I often loose concentration, because the authors put TOO OFTEN hilarity inside the book. It seemed sometimes as it would be a "Dummies" book (I hate them meanwhile...).

2. You also need another book to understand the OO and Java concepts. Unless you are a very experienced Java programmer, you will need something more to cover some topics of this book, like "Exceptions" and "Assertions" (by the way, they are not so good explained). I can suggest you to buy also "Beginning Java 2" by Ivor Horton - despite of the title, you don't must underestimate it; it is a very good book, also for later when you will be experienced in Java. "Beginning Java 2" is a HUGE book (over 1200 pages!), but all the concepts are very well explained, with a lot examples.

3. There is also some positive about this book: the CD is very good, you have the whole book as PDF, and you have also som exams on it. The questions/ansewrs for the exam and the "Two minutes drill" are also well done.

I suggest you to buy both books for your certification: "Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2" plus "Beginning Java 2".

Summary: Excellent. This is the only book you need to pass the exam.
Review: I took the SCJP exam today and scored over 90%. This book made all the difference.

I've been programming in Java since 1.1. I went through the entire book. Not only did I learn what I needed to pass the exam but the review of the Java language, as it stands today in version 1.4, was great. I gained a better understanding of some of the new 1.4 features as well as old features and features I don't use very much. Even things I thought I knew, I gained new insights.

The book is very well organized and written. Great diagrams and tables too. The sample test questions at the end of each chapter were at the same level as those on the actual test. In fact, I would swear that several were on my exam. So after finishing the book, I took the test and passed. Looking back, I feel that the book fully prepared me for all parts of the exam. There were no surprises. The exam was challenging but you can pass it if you study with this book.

The book comes with a CD but I never even used it. It also covers the SCJD exam. I have not read that part so I won't comment on it.

Summary: Excellent Textbook To Help You Prepare For the SCJP Exam
Review: The authors did a good job of covering the topics required by the SCJP exam, and this book really deserves 5 stars.

Summary: VERY VERY GOOD. A+++
Review: This book qustions are just like exam's question.
I do not know why they are so similar??
If you have Introduction to JAVA in your college, you can
solve only this book's excercise and you can pass this
exam, since passing score is only 52%.

Summary: Look No Further!
Review: I wanted a book that would cover everything I needed to know to pass the 310-035 exam. I just took the exam and passed it with flying colors and this book helped a whole lot! Not only is the book full with everything you need, it is an easy book to read. Kathy Sierra is whitty and made the topic seem like fun.

Summary: Excellent Test Preparation Guide
Review: I've been developing software in C/C++ for the past 11 years. Recently, I began to realize that I needed to update my skill set by learning Java. I decided to get my Java Programmer and Developer certifications from Sun. After looking at several Java books, I came upon this one. Kathy and Bert have a casual, enjoyable wrting style that kept the subject matter interesting. In addition to the excellent writing, they included self tests with answers at the end of each chapter. Instead of just reading the book passively, I was able to test my comprehension as I progressed through the material. The additional master exam included with the book was another invaluable exam preparation tool. If you need to quickly and completely learn the Java 2 language, then this is the book for you !

Summary: Only book needed for programmer exam
Review: Excellent book for the programmer exam. Presentation is very casual and neat that you won't get bored of reading. This is the only book I used and achieved a very good score too. Drills and exercise questions at the end of each chapter is also a highlight. Also the real exam's difficulty is comparable to this book's mock exams. Definitely I would recommend this book to anybody seeking a programmer certification. Also I won't miss other books from these authors.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: I just did the SCJP exam a few days ago, and I passed with a 98% score (I just missed 1 question). The book is excellent, it covers all the topics that you need to pass the test. The reviews at the end of each chapter are very helpful. The practice exam, in the cd, is very very similar to the actual exam. Also, the practice exam available for download helps a lot.
I really recommend this book to have a very good preparation for the SCJP exam.

Summary: The exam was based on this book =)
Review: While I was taking the exam, I thought to myself: "Did the book base it's practice questions on the exam, or is it the other way around?" Of course it's not the other way around, but it just goes to show how authentic a certification book this is. If there's anything lacking in the book, it would be a section on operator precedence. But that still isn't enough to take away the 5 stars. Kudos to Sierra & Bates!

Summary: Helped to pass the exam
Review: Passed today the exam, 86%.
This book was really a good help, to identify the exam subjects.

Next to this book I used the on line tests on the Khalid Azim Mughal, Rolf Rasmussen website (A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification)
These tests go beyond the the real exam, but give you just a little extra, absolute necessary to pass the exam.
Also I studied the most important aspect of the exam (inner classes and Threads) with support of the Bruce Eckel on line book.

Summary: Maybe this book was enough, actually I don't think so, I would not take the change. But as mentioned in the beginning, it's a good help.
