Rating: Summary: An Excellent, Empowering, Caring Way of Motivating others. Review: For all of you people out there who want to be an excellent mentor, coach, friend, teacher, manager, peer, team mate, I highly recommend this awesome book of how to motivate and inspire others towards personal development and excellence. As a Training Manager, I found that the suggestions and principles mentioned in this book are things that I do in my job each and everyday...what a joy it was to read that these principles that I incorporate on the job everyday, are great habits, perspectives and behaviors that I should be doing....all nicely laid out and spelled out in this book! I found myself constantly saying things like, "Hey, I do that...Wow! I do that too!" And if you are not doing some of the things they recommend already, the book gives you a real genuine, no-nonsense approach of how you can....starting with little baby steps and working your way more until you reach your comfort zone! I am a strong proponent of mentoring, coaching, and empowering others toward personal development and excellence and I would strongly recommend this book to others who find themselves in the same roles, or to anyone who really wants to make a difference in making an impact & being a person of influence to others....:-)
Rating: Summary: Another Maxwell masterpiece! Review: How will you impact the lives of others? For anyone who works with groups of people (and especially youth) you will find this book to be a great addition to your library. I especially enjoyed the worksheets at the end of each chapter as they were tangible ways of putting theory into practice. This book is very easy to read, but as with most good books in this category, take notes or be willing to re-read chapters as there is almost too much good information. Most books offer nuggets--this one is a serious gold rush. The leadership team I work with spent two weeks on Chapter 3 (A person of influence has Faith in People). I thought this was one of the best chapters in any of Maxwell's books and this will become a permanent part of our leadership program. A great gift for graduating college students or folks newly elected to positions of leadership.
Rating: Summary: Life time guidance on how to influence people effectively Review: I bought this book about 3 weeks ago. Once I started reading this book, I know I can't stop reading it until I reach the final page. In this book, John taught me on how to relate myself to others effectively. It is like I am going through a self-discovery session on some very basic elemments in human relations. In this book John has challenged us on how to achieve Pareto Optimality in forming human relationship with one another. He doesn't leave us just as that. He has underlined the principles for all of us to refer to as at when the situation requires us to do so. John's principles must be put into practise as the benefits are enormous not only to the practitioners but the recipients as well. I am convinced regardless of what field a person is in, this book will be a useful guidance.
Rating: Summary: Not only inspirational but essential for managers! Review: I first got this book just because of the reviews on Amazon.com. The reviews are not wrong or off in any way, this is a great book and life manual! While waiting during Jury duty selections I was able to read the entire book (you gotta love it) and it was hard to put down (until the Judge said so). Many other potential Jurors saw the book and asked about it and where ready to get one themselves after I told them a few of the things inside! I write training and development manuals/courses for a major wholesale warehouse club and I used quite a few of the practices mentioned in a recent supervisor training manual and indicated this is a 'recommended reading'. In fact I mentioned several pages and chapters they were to refer to while reading the manual. If you wish to be not only a better manager or supervisor but a more empowering person in general you must get this book. It is one of the most easy to read books around (visually appealing and the text is not 'tight' or 'crowded') and the concepts are also easy to understand and put into practice right away! Bottom line: purchase this book. The price is insignificant (and the price is really not that high on amazon) compared to the skills you will acquire (which will probablly lead to a higher position anyways!).
Rating: Summary: Best book I've read this year Review: I just bought two more copies of this book. One is for my boss, who is a great boss, but will still benefit from the examples and lessons of this text. The other copy is for friends that I have told can borrow my copy of the book. This is too valuable a book to lend out, so I am buying another copy to lend to friends. You will be encouraged, challenged and uplifted intellectually and emotionally by the sound advice and warm examples shared by these authors. The book may be the sleeper in the line of "In Search of Excellence," and "Seven Habits of Successful People." It will help you sort through the goals of your life and help you create a legacy no matter your position in any organization.
Rating: Summary: Great before an interview!!!! Review: I purchased and read this book a couple of years ago, only a few days before interviewing for a promotion at work. It caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. During the interviewing process I answered many of the questions from info. that I had read out of (Becoming a Person of Influence.) I feel it was a major part of my getting the promotion. There were two others being interviewed that already had titles above mine and later ended up working for me. I have since purchased a number of copies of this book. I give one out to every new employee I hire, in which I'm putting in a supervisory role. It is an inspirational book along with educatinal. I would recommend it to anyone in a leadership role, work or otherwise. It is also a good rescource to go back & review now and then. It helps you stay on track as a supervisor or manager in business.
Rating: Summary: surprisingly forgettable Review: I've read at least six other Maxwell books, and this is the least memorable of all. It's not that there is a lack of content here...looking back through the book, there is a lot of good advice that would be valuable in developing your sphere of influence. It just seems to be an awkward assembly of borrowed wisdom that didn't stick once I closed the cover.
Maybe it's because the majority of the content is repeated from Maxwell's other books. It's not unusual to find two or three quotes or excerpts from other books on each page, which limits the amount of "original" material and seriously hampers the flow. It almost appears that Maxwell and Dornan wrote separately, then did their best to cut-and-paste the two scripts later.
The book considers four levels of influence: model, motivate, mentor and multiply. It does its best to weave those levels into ten chapters whose titles combine to spell "influencer" -- Integrity with people, Nurtures other people, Faith in people, Listens to people, Understands people, Enlarges people, Navigates for other people, Connects with people, Empowers people and Reproduces other influencers.
Perhaps this book would be more effective if you hadn't read any Maxwell books before. It would definitely be best to search through the book for individual nuggets of wisdom rather than try to pull one clear, solid message from these pages. Sadly, the nuggets that you pull are more likely to come from the quotes and excerpts than the original content. This isn't a bad book, but it's definitely not Maxwell's best.

Rating: Summary: People wanting change in their life will benefit greatly Review: John and Jim have written a great book for self improvement. I am preparing to read this book for the 3rd time - as they say in the book - it takes repetition to change your thoughts and actions. Anyone who is looking for improving their life and attitude BUY this book and study it - reading is not studying.
Rating: Summary: THIS IS THE BOOK WE HAVE ALL BEEN LOOKING FOR............... Review: John has got to be one of the most influential writes of modern time. His book maps out for us what it takes to become a leader. He tells us that we can all have those leadership qualities that we admire in our heros. For once, i think we should all try to put our best foot forward and become our own leader. It will take some sacrifice and hard work, but i think we will find it quite rewarding in the end.
Rating: Summary: I was looking for something else Review: John Maxwell again provides a great work that helps the leader within you see what it takes to remain there. In short, do the work. While your doing the work, help others to do the work with you. Improve yourself and bring others along for the ride. This is also a good book to review before an interview or any time when you have to sell yourself.
