Summary: Helpful guide to becoming an exceptional leader.
Review: I found this book pretty helpful for those individuals expiring to become leaders. It was very informational from what it takes to be a leader to the attributes one should have in order to become a leader. The book also answers a lot of questions people may have about being a leader. Such as the idea that the qualities of leadership can be learned, and not just qualities that a person is born with. Maxwell, goes on to not only say that leadership can be taught, but also gives the ways as to which a person can learn these things, and how to follow through once you have reached the leadership level and how to maintain this status. The book also breaks down the differences between the elements people assume to be leadership qualities and the characteristics that are truly those of a proven leader.
This book is very easy to comprehend and interpret. Maxwell didn't write the book in big terms and paragraphs that maybe confusing to some readers. Each chapter is divided up and outlines an important feature needed within the development of a leader. Maxwell also organizes the book so that each chapter connects with the chapter before it, so that the reader can get the full concept from beginning to end guides them through the process of becoming a leader.
Maxwell also provides a variety of stories within each chapter and section to better describe what he is talking about, or how what he is describing can be or has already been applied within a real life situation. Although the stories are helpful in helping the reader understand how these qualities can be applied to actual life situations, they can be over-whelming and redundant after a period of time. All the stories can prohibit the reader from wanting to continue reading the entire chapter, because the reason for reading the book is to obtain some useful knowledge as to how to become an effective leader. This would be my only drawback in reading this book.

Summary: Pleasuably Positive
Review: "Developing the Leader within You" by John C. Maxwell was a delightful reading experience. Not only was it informative on how to become a successful leader, it was entertaining as well.
Maxwell expressed his views on leadership through illustration of comic strips, quotes from famous people and his own life experiences. For example: "Abraham Lincoln said, "I will get ready; then perhaps my chance will come." He used these examples to demonstrate how anyone one can become a great leader. He also used Charlie Brown from the Peanuts comic strip. Charlie said his life was mixed up because he had missed "all the rehearsals" That expressed his leadership abilities, added humor but also expressed the truth on leadership.
He used quotes that he utilized when giving a seminar. "Life is 10 percent of what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it". These words were so enlightening it was like a light bulb went off as I was reading them.
Another technique I found enjoyable was Maxwell's pulling his readers into the book by asking us to stop and evaluate his own leadership skills. This kept me on my toes and I was able to comprehend the skills he was explaining. This also was helpful after completing the book to realize what my strengths and weakness are in leadership.
Throughout the book he gave the true definition of leadership "Leadership is influence. That's it. Nothing more.nothing less...He who thinketh he leadeth and has no one following him is only taking a walk." A positive attitude was expressed throughout the book by using the delightful material.
All in all I found this book a joy to read and would recommend it not only for leadership purposes but also for life experiences.
Thank you,
I am a student from the University of Pittsburgh,

Summary: Enlightening and enjoyable
Review: "Developing the Leader within You" by John C. Maxwell was a very enlightening book to read. It is designed to advise you how to be a leader and where to begin. I also found the book to be a good reminder of things that I should be doing in everyday life when interacting with people. I think sometimes we need to be reminded how important it is to have a positive attitude, integrity, and get to know those with whom you interact; people skills can go a long way. Mr. Maxwell made the book enjoyable by relating the topics to situations and people that he knew.
I enjoyed the research facts of how many people with terminal illnesses were still living due to a positive attitude compared to those who have a negative attitude. It wasn't like some books that try to dictate to you. He also used a mix of Charlie Brown from the Peanuts comic strip and other well-known individuals like Abraham Lincoln to help illustrate his points.
I'm not currently a leader within my company but this gives me a place to start and to practice some of the topics mentioned before I have to. Throughout the book you notice a few topics mentioned over and over showing their importance such as influence, people, and how the leader develops before his followers. I think something else John C. Maxwell does that is great is he has exercises for you to participate in while going through the book. So you're doing more than reading you're interacting. The one thing that is going to stick in my mind is "We are responsible for our attitudes". I sometimes forget its something I do have control over. I was reading this for a class but I would recommend this book to anyone to read, not just for those in the leadership world.

Summary: Get In The Picture
Review: A typically outstanding Maxwell book of advice and practical guidance for aspiring leaders. I recommend this book for its practical expertise. I also suggest you then go on to the book that lays out the underlying philosophy of all Maxwell's good stuff. Reading "West Point" by Norman Thomas Remick will get you completely into the picture.
