Summary: Leadership for the real world
Review: Clear cut illustrations and simple truths abound in this book. However, the strongest point of "21 Qualities" is the emphasis on implementation. Each leadership quality is expounded on, but takes the extra step of issuing specific challenges. If you desire to strengthen the inward frame of your character, you have to walk it out in your everyday life. That is exactly what this book is all about.

Summary: Blah, blah, blah...
Review: Although normally a positive book reviewer (check-out my other "Amazon.com" reviews), I must admit that I have long considered self-help books to be the products of effete snobs, and self-involved "experts" who seek to have all of us become like them -- or at least like what they perceive themselves to be. Dr. Maxwell's latest effort although full of truisms, good advice, wonderful stories, and even humor has done nothing to change my mind.

Summary: Same Old Stuff
Review: John seems to have one outline that he simply fills in different illustrations. He can only ride this horse so long. It is time for him to update his material. This book does not accomplish that. Sorry, I like him on the platform, but his writings are getting stale.

Summary: This piece really hit home...
Review: I read this, thinking, "I already know all there is to know about the qualities of a good leader", but this book proved me wrong. After reading it, I constructed a list of qualities that are good in me, and ones that I need to work on, and I'm on the path to becoming a strong leader. It worked for me, as stubborn :) as I am, so it can work for anyone.

Summary: Person vs. Position
Review: A lot of people in leadership positions think you must follow them because of their position and the power that goes with it. Maxwell says that the kind of person you are is more important than the kind of position you hold.

Why do some leaders have such respect that they would be the leader no matter where they are or what they are doing? Why do some leaders have followers who will go to the ends of the earth with them and others do not inspire such loyalty? This book gives insights into the qualities of a person who people will want to follow. As the author says, if no one is following, then you are not really leading.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: I find this is one of the easiest and most impactful books on leadership that I have read.

I have been leading people for almost 30 years and I must say that I had many "OUCH" opportunities reading Maxwell's views on leadership qualities.

I read something from this book every working day.

Summary: A must read
Review: This book is one of the best management books I've ever read. Simple and direct to the point. The short stories of great leaders provides great enlightenment and deep reflection to the reader. If you want to know how you fair well at this stage of your life as a leader, read this and get to know yourself better.

Summary: Good Learning Method
Review: I believe this book to be a useful aid to understanding specific qualities that enable successful leaders. I have been reading one chapter each week to develop an awareness of each specific quality. I think it will take me a long time to become a great leader and this is one book that will help my journey.

Summary: 21 Indispensable Qualities of A Leader
Review: The book is fantastic. The content is simple and understandable. The concept of internalizing the information is great. Experiential learning is a most effective way to live the concept and observe the application on a daily basis. Awareness and knowledge, what a great combination. I would like to use the information and concepts in workshops that my consulting company will provide in 2000.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Too little substance
Review: While the author seems well-intentioned, the book is very superficial. It seems to be recycled bromides and platitudes, connected by anecdotes and quotes, and punctuated by occasional exaggeration (like "everything rises and falls on leadership" - everything?). There are hundreds of leadership books with more meat.
