Summary: It covers it all!
Review: John Maxwell has taken all the lessons he's learned on the subject of leadership and has put it all in one volume. It covers it all: from personal development to developing those around you. He has also implemented sound biblical teaching and a Christian worldview throughout, showing the relevance of Christianity in day-to-day life. Hooray for Maxwell! I recommend everything he's ever written.

Summary: Author condenses a lot of wisdom into 21 simple chapters
Review: The author takes a lifetime of successful leadership application and puts on the bottom shelf where anyone can get to it.

Summary: Wonderful! Identifies the basics & lets LEADERS DO the rest
Review: This is a book that gives leaders ideas for improvement. The concepts are well defined, you have to DO the rest! It gives clarity to the areas that leaders intiutively understand but may not have articulated or summarized as clearly as Maxwell does.

If you are looking for tools to help fuel your vision, this could be one! Leadership has many facets, so I'm using the 21 laws as a checklist that covers the spectrum of leadership skills I need to be an outstanding leader.

If you are a "DOer", this will give you more ideas on how to get results through strong leadership!

Summary: Almost "incredible" book of timeless wisdom in leading.
Review: John Maxwell has surpassed himself with "21 Laws". For anyone wanting to become a leader, this book is a must. The presentation is extremely easy to follow and the illustrative stories seal the lid on each law. Timeless, persuasive, undeniably one of the best all-time leadership books.

Summary: Why I wrote The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
Review: I believe that to be successful in life, every person needs four skills: 1) The ability to cultivate relationships with others; 2) The ability to equip and develop other people; 3) A positive attitude; and 4) Leadership ability. I wrote The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership to help people develop their leadership skills. I've taken everything I've learned from over thirty years of leadership in business and volunteer organizations, and I've boiled it down to 21 timeless principles that anyone can use and apply, regardless of profession, culture, gender, or position. Leadership is influence. No matter whether you are a business person trying to run a better company, a coach trying to build a winning team, or a parent trying to influence your children, your success depends on leadership. Ignore a law of leadership, and you suffer the consequences. It's like dealing with the law of gravity. Your awareness of the laws of physics doesn't matter. Jump out of a window, and you must deal with the results of your actions. They are inevitable. The same is true of the laws of leadership. Learn and follow the laws, and people will follow you. Violate or ignore them, and they won't. Someone recently asked me why I didn't include a lot of concrete application in this book, as I have in most of the other books I've written. The reason is this: I don't know what your particular leadership situation is. Application changes from person to person, but the laws apply no matter who you are or where you find yourself leading. Learn the principles, and you can apply them anywhere. Apply them, and you will become a better leader. And that will make you more effective, no matter what you want to accomplish in life.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I have heard John Maxwell speak and have been overwhelmed by his insights. However, this book leaves me cold. Maxwell enumerates the qualities and illustrates them with many historical examples, but fails to spend much time in detailing how to personally apply and develop the 21 Laws.

Summary: Maxwell has nailed it with this book on leadership!
Review: "Don't ever say 'always,'" my mother told me. So when someone says "irrefutable" I'm quick to challenge such a too-complete assertion. But the more I've read of Maxwell's "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership," the more I think he's nailed it.

John Maxwell has been learning and teaching leadership throughout his entire career as a Wesleyan pastor and seminar speaker. He lives and breathes leadership. And in this book he has distilled the art of leadership into 21 "simple" laws. Well, not so simple, maybe, but at least understandable.

#1 "The Law of the Lid" asserts his basic premise that leadership ability determines the ultimate level of a person's effectiveness. If you have gifts and abilities, you'll make a greater impact the better leader you become. While some people may be blessed with a natural aptitude for leadership, Maxwell contends that leadership "skills" are learnable. You don't have to be a "born leader." You can apply yourself and become a much better leader than you are.

#2 "The Law of Influence." Here's another bedrock proposition: Leadership = Influence, no more and no less. Many church and secular leaders grossly misunderstand this point. They think that Leadership = Power. Maxwell argues that your leadership scope is how many people you influence, not how much organizational power you can wield from your position or office. On the basis of these two concepts, Maxwell constructs a whole philosophy of leadership. He explains the laws of "Solid Ground," "Respect," "Intuition," "the Inner Circle" and many others.

Some are especially intriguing. "The Law of E.F. Hutton," for example, is based on a TV ad campaign that ended with the motto: "When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen." Maxwell's Law #5 says you can quickly tell who the real leader/influencer in a group is, because when this person speaks, everyone at the table listens, nods, and begins to express assent. Maxwell learned this at his first church where he discovered the real leader was Claude, even though Claude wasn't even the church moderator. Maxwell then learned to influence Claude and let Claude lead the others.

You can see how practical this kind of book could be. We bumble around for much of our lives, and stumble over these "laws," trying to learn to be leaders, often not understanding what went wrong. With some clear direction -- and that's what Maxwell provides -- you'll be able to grow more quickly as a leader.

Don't expect a "spiritual" book, however. While the "laws" are solidly founded on Scriptural principles, they are expressed in a non-religious manner. For years, Maxwell has been called on by mega-corporations to teach leadership to their executives, so this and some of his more recent books are designed to be read with profit by both Christian and business audiences.

I've read a lot in the field of leadership, and in my opinion, Maxwell is tops. He's not only humorous and easy-to-read, his analysis of the essentials of leadership is brilliant. If you're a church leader, you'll want to read this, and then buy a copy for your pastor at Christmas. If you're a pastor, this is a book to absorb and then circulate among your lay leaders to raise their level of leadership. This will also be an appreciated gift to a business executive.

Summary: On The Soap Box
Review: Zig Ziglar has some good ideas, but the overall advice in this book doesn't offer clear tips to improve leadership skills in the short term. With elections drawing near, it reminds me of a dry, rambling political platform. Check out Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life, it has practical every day advice on how to be the leader of your own life.

Summary: The reality of leading in business
Review: This is an excellent book of legendary leaders and management. We gain the opportunity to see the "big picture", and learn from the successes and failures of others. If you believe that we should always be surrounding ourselves with more wise and experienced people, then this book will make sense to you. I will reiterate that this is not a step-by-step, tips, tricks, or get rich tomorrow book. Whether, you are an entrepreneur or climbing the corporate ladder, this book will help with your vision and relationships in business.
