Summary: Excellent and an easy read
Review: I found this book to be one of the best "good for you" books I have ever read. Maxwell does not offer a prescription on how to be a leader (there is no such thing), but rather offers insight into the most fundamental traits of good leadership. I plan on keeping this book handy and using it as part of my "quiet time" each day. I found that I had a grasp of many of the laws, even though I did not have a label for them. Most importantly, I found the laws that offer insights into the areas on which I need to focus in order to develop my leadership ability to the next level. I wish I had access to this book years ago.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Book has promise, but lacks muscle and in-depth discussion
Review: Maxwell gives some excellent irrefutable laws, but then fails to back up his maxims with expounding. Additionally, many of his laws are rife with examples of him patting himself on the back with how his leadership was able to accomplish something never before done. While I respect and admire his experience, and will undoubtedly use some of his ideas, I don't need to be reminded why he is the expert on the subject every twenty pages. Overall, a decent book, but certainly not one for those who are looking to jumpstart their leadership career. For more in-depth analysis, see Covey or Bennis and Nanus.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: A lightweight overview of leadership traits
Review: Like many books in this genre, Maxwell provides a lightweight overview of the traits of leadership. He "proves" his rules with one or two examples, a method that is logically incorrect, and the only reason he gets away with it is that most of the rules are pretty obvious.

What the reader won't get is much content. The frustrated reader will ask, "OK, this is a trait of a good leader. How do I get there?" This book does not provide an answer.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Not for those looking for a hand to hold
Review: This book is wonderful in its insightful wisdom, but it definetely not for anyone looking to be guided every step of the way. Rather this book is a broad brush stroke of the principles of leadership with many real-world examples to back each one up. Maxwell, gives just the right amount of content without dictating to the reader the a road map to success. Each principle can be further explored in depth to allow the reader to concentrate on those areas in which they are most in need of improvement. Masterfully done, by far Maxwell's best book yet.

Summary: An excellent overall perspective on leadership
Review: This book is a must read for anyone who is in a leadership position. As a Boy Scout professional, I work with many volunteers. I found many concepts that one can use as a guide with volunteers or employees. John never tied the laws together nor did he go into detail on how to apply them, I think he did this to force the reader to think for themselves, which is atrait all leaders must have.

Summary: Irrefutable? Give me a break.
Review: This book should have been 21 Helpful Hints, not 21 Irrefutable Laws. Maxwell never brings his "laws" together into a model or tells the reader how to apply them. I have to admit, I did enjoy the book while reading it, but I felt cheated when I reached the end. The notion that his laws or anyone's laws are irrefutable is simply nonsensical.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Simultaneously Complex and Simple Leadership Guide
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a quick read, with great stories and relevant examples. Powerful for both business and personal leadership development.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great for young leaders
Review: This book is a great guide for younger people like myself who are or intend to be a leader at some point. His stories truly illistrate how his techniques have worked. Being a 22 year old headed into the business world, I am really excited to get an oppurtunity to lead a group of people. If you read this book, focus on the chapter of the law of navigation.

Summary: This book offers a background for successful leadership.
Review: John Maxwell's hard cover is available on audio cassette. It was a pleasure to listen to it in the car on my way to work. It is filled with bits of wisdom I found very valuable to have in my thinking. The narrator has a steady, pleasant voice. He explains each of the Laws clearly and understandably one at a time, thus allowing the listener to pause at each new law to reflect.

There are many references to founders of popular businesses. I could relate to his success stories of well known companies like McDonald's or Apple Computer.

Maxwell is himself a minister of a church which he built successfully using the laws he describes. Because he is a minister, he has the ability to communicate in layman's terms. The story like manner in which the book is written allows for stress-free listening and easy learning.

I would recommend this book as an excellent supplement to any class in leadership skills or mentoring. It gives the reader a broad base to rely on when dealing with the long range goals.

Summary: Influence and success are yours through this book.
Review: Thoroughly enjoyable. Filled with principles and enough examples to help you apply them.
