Rating: Summary: A Thrilling Read.. Review: Already knowing a bit about the subject, I thought this book would be kind of boring.. I was Dead Wrong!.. The book is written with his wonderful sense of humor coming through despite the sometimes horrific details.. Dr. Maple's ability to make you think, and understand from his point of view is amazing.. I only wish I could have been one of his students.. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in anthropology, forensics, real crime, and even the history of the Corpse!
Rating: Summary: Fascinating... Review: Excellent memoir by Dr. William R. Maples, which includes details of his life, and the many fascinating cases (such as: did President Zachary Taylor die of poisoning?) that he has been called in to investigate.Interesting and informative, Dr. Maples' book makes for some interesting reading, on a subject matter (forensics) that's commonly discussed now, but wasn't at the time of publication of this book (1994).
Rating: Summary: Well done! Review: The late Dr. Maples provides us with a fascinating, yet humane look into some of his most rewarding and sensational cases. Perhaps his most poignant chapter is that discussing J. Merrick, known to all as the "Elephant Man." While thoroughly describing Merrick's maladies, Maples also adds his own thoughtful spin to the elephant man tale. And as any good forensics expert would, Maples displays a proper respect for the bones - allowing the reader to sympathize with the actual people whose stories can only be truly told by their remains. This book is especially recommended to fellow forensics freaks.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever!!!!! Review: ... I found this book delightful. It informes as well as entertains. Although greusome and stomach turning at times, it is truly facinating. I would recomend this book to anyone, especially someone interested in forensics.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Recommended for anyone interested in Forensic Anthropology!!
Rating: Summary: Dead Men Do Tell Tales Review: A must read for anyone interested in forensic science. William Maples' expertise in the field is astounding as you read through the numerous cases he has helped solve. Throughout the book Mr. Maples educates the reader with understandable vocabulary and occasional subtle wit. An enjoyable, educational and captivating book to say the least.
Rating: Summary: Great story of a Forensic Anthro's Cases Review: I am going into Forensic Anthropology and this book really helped me learn a bit more about what is ACTUALLY done. These stories are based on crimes that the author has solved using his wide variety of knowledge on forensic anthro. The book has many unsettling, gruesome details so it is not for someone to read that is has a weak heart, nor is it for someone purley reading it for fun-they would be sickos. Basically this book has a variety of different cases the author has worked on, and how he came to his conclusions on cause of death etc. Wonderfully written in an almost sarcastic/humerous tone at times.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read Review: This book was required for our "De-Cal" student taught university class on Forensic Anthropology. I found most of the chapters quite fascinating. I picked up the book to read and finished it in one night (when we're only supposed to read one chapter), dispite the fact I had a math test looming over my head the next day. The first part of the book takes you through the life of the author; how he decided to go into the field when he was in college, some related part time jobs he had as a university student. Later, we follow the author as he goes on the case (including the Anastasia myth...). This is my favorite part of the book. Certain cases might be more interesting to some. Presidential buffs would enjoy the chapter when when an ex US president is exumed and examined. True crime enthusiasts would enjoy the gang related murder he had to dig up, literally dig up! Conspiracty theorists would have a "scratch your head" time with the murder/suicide mystery in the case about the woodin cabin.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Look Into Forensic Anthropology Review: Everyone who has an even remote interest in this topic should read this book! Dr. Maples explains this topic in such a way that everyone who reads it should have a new appreciation and respect for such a unique field. As a former paramedic and now a police officer, I found this work to be not only informative, but easily digestable. It is not stuffy nor above the average readers head. This book should give the reader an appetite to learn more about this highly fascinating field. I was sorry to hear that Dr. Maples passed away in 1997.
