Rating: Summary: Big disappointment Review: This book highlights the only drawback of ordering on-line: You can't pick it up and thumb through it. If I had, I would have put it back on the shelf. The book consists of 1 or 2-page anecdotes from Grant's life, and then (sometimes loosely) connected to a business principle. While I found some of the anecdotes mildly interesting, the business lessons were sometimes insultingly simple. A couple of examples: (1) Don't swear. (2) Interview people in person if at all possible. I was looking for a book with a narrative that provided insights into Grant's strategic thinking, his psychology of leadership, etc. Instead I received fortune-cookie truisms linked loosely to Grant's life. I think what I was looking for may be found in Tom Wheeler's book.
Rating: Summary: Best book on Leadership that I ever read Review: This book is a must read for anyone in a leadership position or one who aspires to be a leader. It is also a great book for students that will enable them to set the correct moral tone for the rest of their lives. As a Naval Academy graduate and former Marine Officer I wish that I had read this book when I was younger. The insight into the proper ways of handling difficult and every day situations are not matched by any book on leadership that I have ever read. I checked the book out in our local library and before I finished it I ordered 7 copies from Amazon to give to my friends and colleagues. Today, I just ordered 10 more. I tip my hat to Mr. Kaltman for an outstanding job. I have also come to appreciate General Grant as a man of honor and outstanding leadership.
Rating: Summary: Good solutions for everyday problems Review: This book is an excellent summation of the lessons learned by Ulysses S. Grant in an easy-to-read format. The book is well-paced and divided, following Grant's victories and defeats in military, civilian and personal battles from his childhood through the Civil War, his presidency, and Kaltman even manages to draw cogent and sobering lessons from his death. For each chapter the author gives a short story and draws a lesson from it. Each lesson is less than two pages, giving the reader an ability to read for a few minutes at a time during a busy day without losing his or her place or train of thought. Because of the length Kaltman does not run his point into the ground like many management books. His simple explanations stand alone. Kaltman's innovative format is now being emualted by many management authors. Don't be fooled by the easy read--this book contains serious lessons that I will ponder again and again and wish I had learned earlier in life. The oft-maligned Grant is a worthy hero, and Kaltman has extracted invaluable morals from his experiences. If the author's bias that Grant deserves a better place in history than he currently enjoys shows through in some places, it is a sentiment I share. And so will you after you read his book. I recommend this book as a gift for anyone struggling to learn the skills to survive and thrive in the battlefield of business.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tips for managers Review: This book is one of the best about management styles that I have ever seen. I teach management, I have been a manager, and I have run my own business. This book has some very common sense tips for managers of all types, be they in business, in the classroom, at home with kids, etc. 250 great examples of winning management techniques without all the kitch that these types of books often have. My copy was a gift for Christmas, and it was easily the best gift I got of the season. I am sending copies to some of my friends just because. I am also using it in my classes because of the practical lessons it teaches.
Rating: Summary: A Reader Review: This book was not only a very interesting read into the life of U.S. Grant, but it provides advice in that context for a leader of men and women, regardless of the organization or goal. This book was suggested to me by a close friend and after reading it, I suggest it to my closest friends to help them in their lives.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read For All Managers Review: This is an extraordinary work on leadership with a nice mix of the history of this great country. The corporate managers of industry in this country should heed the advice that Grant offers to work efficiently and compete with competitors, domestic and world wide. To Mr. Kaltman I have made further purchases of your book for colleagues who will be pleasantly surprised, by the content and the author. Captain, Cleveland Fire Dept. Retired
Rating: Summary: This Book Is Very Motivational Review: You must admit, since it has so many reviews, this book got people up off their buts to comment. I found it to be compelling and it kept me thinking about the subject matter all day long. I have a book that rates presidents and its writer gave Grant failing marks. Since I have read this and a couple of other treatise on him, I believe that writer was up in the night. Yes, and that's a firm conviction.
